What is an action verb?

• An action verb is a word that expresses action.

• Think back: Every sentence has two parts, a subject and a predicate. The main word in the predicate is often an action verb.

• The action verb tells what the subject of the sentence does or did.

• The main verb shows what the subject does or is.

• The helping verb helps the main verb to show an action in the sentence. – By itself, a helping verb cannot show action.

• Show something that is happening now.
