I. Catholic ReformsA. Between 500 & 1000 the Catholic Church became corruptB. Reforms were instituted btwn 1000 & 1300 to purify the Church

II. The Structure of the ChurchA. The Church resembled a kingdom

B. The Church ran a system of courts based on canon law
C. The Church also collected taxes in the form of tithes
D. The Inquisition served as the Church’s military1. Stopped the spread of

III. Monarchs Strengthened their PowerA. English Monarchs
1. William the Conquerora. William defeated Harold
Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings in 1066

c. William redistributed all of the English land to his vassals

centralized European kingdom
