    Task 1 E-Commerce and you

    Benefits

Being able to access information and goods from all around theworld

Over the internet without any cost or with very cheap rate anyone can get accessinformation and goods from all over the world. Using search engine, even withoutknowing exact website name, anyone can get information. Even setting severalcriteria, more specific and useful information is possible get easily. For example,if anyone types specific keywords for any goods in the search engines likeyahoo.com or google.com, then all information related to that keywords willappear on the screen.

Being able to do this any time of the day or night

E-commerce or website or internet information is open for 24 7 hours. Any timewe can connect to internet and get access information.

Getting a good price for goods

Sometimes online or e-commerce price is cheaper than store price. There are some

websites that compare price between different online prices. For example,

Kelkoo.co.uk is a website that compares the price of electronic goods like camera, TV

    and camcoder.

Being able to track orders and get information about goods

We can place orders online and keep track and trace the orders like when the product

has been dispatched, when it will delivered and when it has been delivered. For

example, if we post a letter by special delivery or registered, typing the tracking

number on the royal mail website, we can trace whether it has been delivered.

    Disadvantages

Not having someone to talk to and having problems with complaints

On the internet you can see the product pictures and read information only. When

someone is encouraged to order the product seeing product pictures and reading

information, he/she may not be satisfied to see the original product when it comes. As

a result, number of complaints arises for online shopping especially when customers

    buy cloths.

Not trusting the site and its securityWhen we search any product using search engines, we get a list of thousand of

thousand websites. Many of then are not trustworthily and secure to use them. So we

should visit well-known and reliable websites like lastminutes.com, bbc.co.uk,amazon.com to buy products. If a website is unknown, then different people opinions

    2

can be looked at as consideration. Most of the websites have their own payment

options in addition to paypal or well-known payment options and in this case

customers can use paypal to pay as it has high security. But most of the websites can

not provide high security and guarantee to ensure that their credit/debit card

information will not pass to wrong hands or any third parties.

    Not seeing the product beforehand

Like a store, e-commerce doesnt show the original products before buying it apart

from only pictures of it and/or short vide clip. It is a kind of disadvantage not seeing

    the products beforehand over store.

Not being familiar with the interface or using an ill-designed websiteSome websites do not have good user interface or using an ill-designed website.

Sometimes, websites have complexity to use and used unfamiliar icons.

The e-commerce has some potential risks as well and it may down the company even

it is highly established. Due to crash of the server or low speed or steaming, potential

customers may not visit further or get afraid to order products.

    Task 2

E-commerce is another way of doing business and it is different from store business. For this business, we dont need any office or store to do e-commerce. After making

an e-commerce website, we need to link up the website to the search engines setting

several keywords to ensure that when potential customers type any of such keywords

the search engines list the site in the index. If the website is not within top 10 or 20,

then potential customers may not be able to see the website or may order from

    somewhere else.

Any person for anywhere in the world can browse the website and order product

online. During order customers can pay using credit or debit card through paypal or

secured site of the website. Then they can keep track of the order and know thedelivery status of the product. From the web hosting, the company could know the

following range of statistical information that could help to gain competitive

    advantages;

How many potential customers have hit or visited the website

How many of them bought any product

What patterns of products customers like to select or like to place in the

    shopping cart

Keeping track of customers from each country.

For this task, I investigated two local businesses and their e-commerce sites:

Al-Amin is an Indian restaurant and it is situated at our community. The restaurant

serves spicy and hot Indian foods to its local customers who come in and deliver

foods to them who orders by telephone.

In order to increase the sales, the owner has decided to launch the e-commerce

website. Apart from developing website cost, it has no other cost including start up

cost and has little running cost. In the nearby other similar businesses like Pizza Hut,

Chinese restaurant and Chunky chicken shop are the competitors of Al-Amin

restaurant who have already online ordering systems. As a result, those shops can

deliver foods up to several miles with discounted rate.

In order to compete other similar business, the Al-Amin restaurant has recently

launched an online ordering system. As soon as someone orders, the owner of the

restaurant gets SMS notification to his mobile immediately and delivers the food as

soon as possible. Because of the online ordering system, the sales have been

    increased.

In order to make familiar the website among the community or global users, selecting

name of the website or familiar name is very important. Sometimes several or

multiple websites name can be bought and users can be directed to one website only.

In order to encourage potential customers to visit a website, search engine promotion, banners and pop-ups can be used. A website with free customer registration facility

    4

and giving seasonal promotion or voucher can attract potential customers to visit and

use the system to order products.

In order to maintain customer base, an ecommerce website should have the following

    features:

The website should be easy to use Multiple domain registrations

Placing adverts on the newspapers, leaflets, other websites

Web presence when a search engine is used to find an item or product

The offers or information of price reduction should be available in the

    opening page

Regular email contact or sending promotional offers regularly

    Registration and log in

    Adding welcoming and useful information

    Making secure the website

Make available of all policies including refund policy, change of productpolicy and complaint procedure

    Regular update of the website

    Placing different people opinions

Facility for keep tracking of the order

WentWorth is an estate agent who sales houses and rent properties to local customers.

Recently started web-based sales as well. They provide all the necessary information

on the website. When any customer comes to the office, tell them to register online

using their website to get property sales and renting information quickly. The

webmaster of the website maintains a database listing all customers email addressesand provides username & password as well. The estate agent sends regularly

(minimum once a week or twice a week) a list of new property and renting

information to their email. Then potential customers find out more contacting over the

telephone or login to the system. After login, they can make appointment; ask

questions if anything and go-ahead with mortgage applications. The website has

linked to different lenders/banks and assures quality service for getting cheap rate

    mortgage.

For an ecommerce site or business, multiple domain registration is very important.

Potential customers should get the website easily. For example, instead of typingalamin.co.uk, if they type al-amin.com or alamin.co.uk, they should get it.

The business should provide keywords to the search engine so that they can make

index the website better. The business can do it paying monthly instalments or charge

or making official sponsor or can do by writing meta code embedded into the HTML.

It is not so effective for a commercial site, as the website can be seen after 3/4 pages

of searching and potential customers may not visit the website. After typing

keywords, if a website name comes within to 10 list, those websites are visited by the

    most potential customers.

Banners, ad and pop up or special offers message can be used to attract potentialcustomers. The business can send special offer sending email to the regular

customers. Making attractive and easy to use website is another issue to make a

    customer based website.

    Task 3

    Consumer Credit Act (2006)

The act is consumer protection law that protects consumers who buy goods using

    credit/debit card.

The businesses that sale products while customers pay by credit or debit card and lend

money or provide services and get paid by credit card. These businesses must have

licensed by the Office for fair Trading (OFT). Trading without a license from OFT is

a criminal offence and can result in a fine and/or imprisonment.

When a customer pay online or get loan from a financial company, both company andcustomer must sign on terms and conditions and read the terms and conditions. If it is

done, then the company is legally liable for the consequences of the order and

product. If the product is not delivered or can not be delivered, then it is a breach of

contract and consumer credit act can be applied.

If a company disappears or goes out of business, then according to the consumer

credit card act, the credit card company must refund full money if the product is faulty

and its price is between 100 and 30, 000 GBP (Great British Pound Sterling) and the

consumer cant get compensation from the actual company. If any customer is not

happy with the service they get or is not happy with the claim they make, consumers

can take further to the Financial Ombudsman without any charge. The act also coverstransactions made overseas or to any foreign companies.

    Fair Trading Act (1973)

The act ensures that any company deals with finance must provide quality services

and follow standards given by the trading standards. The work of trading standards

impacts on every resident and commercial enterprise.

The trading standards officers visit, inspect and test every conceivable type of product

or service such as product safety, animal and human health, consumer credit, food, product counterfeiting, product price, environmental effect and so on. The website of

the trading standards provide all necessary information to the customers and/or help

customers to make a right decision but it cant give customer any guarantee.

The act is to ensure compliance with a wide range of UK and European legislation. It

aims to ensure a fair and safe trading environment for consumers and honest

businesses by being accessible, responsible and innovative; dealing effectively and

fairly with non-compliance; informing, educating, monitoring and advising and a

commitment to service excellence. The act also encourage to both consumers and

businesses to be responsible to each other and to practice it by offering advice and

    information.

    Consumer Protection Act

The Act was introduced in 1974 to protect consumers and consumers right. Aconsumer protection law in the UK which requires certain businesses to obtain

consumer credit licenses. This act protects any individual who receives credit up to

25,000 GBP. The consumer who is not happy with any companys service or goods,

he can appeal under this act and it could be done by the Office of Fair Trading.

Data Protection Act (1998)The act protects the rights of the individual about whom data is stored, processed or

supplied rather than those of the people or organisations who control and use personal

    data.

The act was originally introduced in 1984. The data protection act 1998 covers much

broader in scope than 1984 act. The act covers the following act principles:

    1. Fairly and lawfully processed

    2. Processed for limited purposes

    3. Adequate, relevant and not excessive

    4. Accurate

    5. Not kept longer than necessary

    6. Processed in accordance with the data subjects rights

    7. Secure

    8. Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection

Under the act, if any employee handle customers personal data but doesnt follow the

act properly, they can also be prosecuted in addition to the company. The fines could

be up to 5000GBP if the company use or disclose information about other people

without their consent or proper authorisation.

The employee could even be committing an offence if he or she passes information to

another employee or any other companies who doesnt have right or legitimate duties

to hold those data. We should take particular care when using the Internet, e-mail and

the internal network. Special care must be taken with sensitive data such as ethnic

origins, religious/political beliefs, health data, disabilities, details of offences or

alleged offences, sexual life or trade union membership.

    Freedom of Information Act (2000)

It was one of the major commitments of Labour parts 1997 manifestos. It is an act

that gives right to know to any public in relation to public and bodies authority. If

required information is not available elsewhere then anyone in the UK wish to make a

request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. \the act intends to do the

    following:

    Promote a culture of openness and accountability amongst public sector bodiessuch as the Authority;

    7

  • 8/3/2019 Unit 34 E

    8/18

    Unit 34 by Aaron Sanghera

Give the public a better understanding of how public sector bodies carry out their

duties, why they make the decisions they do and how public money is spent; and

Make the workings of Public Authorities transparent thereby encouraging a

    greater public interest in them.

If anyone doesnt comply with the act, the protection commission has power to issuean enforcement notice and take action via information tribunal. If any person or the

authority still doesnt comply with the action of the tribunal, then affected part could

go to court and this act could help a lot. If it is proven that someone has mis-used

anyones information, according to the act the penalty could go up to 5,000 GBP.

The request of getting information could be in writing and must contain the following

    elements to apply:

    The applicant's name;

A correspondence address to send the information to; and

A description of the information required.

The person who needs to get any information, he/she may need to pay to the

government depending on the nature of the information.

For example, if someone would like to stand for election for becoming councillor

he/she may need all voters details for campaigning purposes. Then paying

appropriate amount of money, the person should get a copy. If the person mis-uses

any of the information, according to the act he may be fined or prosecuted.

Most of the businesses display information in a way that users/customers getnecessary information as quickly as possible. For example, how to claim refund, how

to return products/goods and make complaint to the head office or store. Some

companies, after selling goods/products, immediately or within a few days send email

to ask several questions regarding product quality and customer services and make

rating and/or display customers feedback. Some companies encourage customers to

encourage customers to recommends friends and families and provide further

discount. When a customer is happy then only recommends to others. So these are the

evidence or kind of signs to indicate that those companies are following the above

acts and/or providing good customer services.

    Task 5

The technology in useThe ecommerce uses the following technologies:

    1. Website including updating information

    2. Domain registration

    3. Web space

    4. FTP software

    5. Internet browser

    6. Internet connection possibly broad bank connection

    7. Server computer including operating system, mouse and keyboard

    8. Permanent IP address9. Networking mesh networking

    10. Networking accessories including hub, router and switch

    11. TCP/UDP and IP protocols

    12. A range of software including operating system/network operating system and

    server side scripting

In order to make an ecommerce website, we must need first a website, domain

registration, webs space, FTP software, internet browser and broadband connection

(first six from the above list). These are the basic requirement for building an

ecommerce website or simple website to launch on the internet.

A specialist website designer can make a website using HTML, JavaScript and server

side scripting. Then we need to buy a domain with an extension. Domain name is very

important as people know the business with domain name only. The name should be

small, attractive and related what you are doing with the business. There are some

companies that do domain registration with yearly fixed rate. Then we need web

space to upload the site. The size of the web space depends on the business and it

could be up to several Giga bytes. Some ISPs or even some search engines, provide

free web spaces up to several mega bytes to their customers. In order to use the web

space or up load files into the specific directory on to the web space, we need FTP

user name, password and FTP software. On the internet there are some FTP softwareand they are free to use such as FTPCute or FTPSwitch. Before uploading, we must

need broadband connection to go online or live.

After launching or uploading all files onto the web space, we need to check and/or test

whether they are working well or not. Due to naming problem, the website may show

errors message. For example, the webpage will be appeared first, it must be named as

index.html or index.htm. If it is not done or nay upper case/lower case naming

problems, the page may not be displayed on to the browser. We should update web

information regularly to make it customer based. The most usable internet browser is

called internet explorer. Some people like to use Mozilla Firefox as an alternative of

Internet Explorer as it is much light and easy to use.

If your business would like to maintain web space by themselves or independently,

they need a server computer. It must leave on 24 hours otherwise website would be

down and no one can browse it. In this case, permanent IP address is required for the

business. It is easy to register over the internet. The website must be uploaded to the

    server PC.

In order to make internet infrastructure, servers are connected to different servers

using cable, telecommunication system and optical fibre depending on the nature and

demand. The topology of the internet or structure is called mesh topology.

Theoretically a number of computers or general computers are connected to each

server to get internet access and the computer is called client machine. Client machine

must have internet connection in addition to network protocols (TCP, UDP and IP). A

protocol is a rule that allows to send or receive data packets. TCP is reliable but

doesnt its comparatively slower than UDP. UDP doesnt provide acknowledgement

but it is faster than TCP.

In order to make local network and then to connect it with internet then we need hub,

switch or router to enable more computers. In this case, each computer must have

individual IP address. It can be set manually or automatically. In stead of cable

connection, we can use wireless adapter to enable wireless connection. It is suitable to

connect to internet for notebook or laptop.

In order to make interactive or dynamic website, we can use server side scripting such

as ASP, java scrip and PHP. Content Management System (CMS) is a tool to

maintain and look up a website without any technical complexity or hassle. A

professional website designer designs website in a way that using CMS facility, a web

master can change or update almost everything to meet business requirements.

Payment services availableMost of the websites that deal with finance use payment or online payment facility.

They accept credit, debit, visa, master card, American express, store card or all major

cards. The business provides two types of facilities where (1) customers can pay

directly to the business using their credit/debit card or using bank account and (2)

using recognised payment service such as PayPal and Money bookers (visa bank). In

order to use payment service, the customer must have online account with them. In

this case, for example, in order to pay by PayPal, customer will select PayPal option

rather than any visa, credit or debit card option. Then the system will ask usernameand password to make the transaction.

If any customer would like to pay directly to the business using his/her credit, debit or

visa card, after selecting the icon, the system will allow customer to type card details.

Then the system will check and confirm the payment generating a unique transaction

id. If the credit, debit or visa card is used for the first time, the system asks customers

to register for email notification. If it is done already or previously, after completing

an the payment, the system sends an email notification or some times SMS

notification to make aware the customer regarding the payment or transaction.

Differences between credit/debit/bank payment and paypal payment

When the website or company is trusted, most of the customers use credit/debit or

bank transfer for the service or paying bills. On the other hand, when the business or

website is less trusted or internationally, then customers like to pay using paypal due

    to high security and guarantee.

For example, when a customer like to pay gas/electricity bills, he can use credit/debitcard to pay it. On the other hand, when a customer buys a product from e-bay then he

    can pay by paypal.

In order to use paypal payment, a customer must have paypal account with a valid

bank account or credit/debit card. For credit/debit card payment, customers dont need

to register with or have no additional account. Though now-a-days most of the

credit/debit cards sends email notification after using the cards.

Paypal provides more security than dedit/credit card payment. In the case of dispute,

paypal and the credit/debit card company takes the responsibility. On the other hand,

for card payment, only the credit/debit card company takes the responsibility.

Most of the business accept paypal payment though they have other card payment

options as well. But bust of the business accept only few major cards like visa and

    master card.

Paypal charges little amount to the seller for the service. On the other hand,

credit/debit card company doesnt charge anything extra for their services.

Potential risks to organisations of committing to an e-

commerce systemLike any other high street business, the e-commerce has some potential risks.

Appropriate security can minimise the risks. The following potential risks are given

that must be overcome to do an e-commerce system:

The server can crashes and as a result, the organisation may loose customers,

reputation and even business from the market

The server computer can be affected by dangerous viruses and can destroy

    websites

Due to complexity or being not user friendly website, the organisation may

loose customers Due to setting high security level, potential customers may get difficulty to

    visit the site

If the organisation doesnt provide enough information against a product, then

potential customers may not happy to buy the product

Due to weak password, someone or hackers may be able to hack e-commerce

    systems.

All aspects of securitySecurity internet is a serious threat to use the internet securely. Through internet

malicious viruses or worms could come and attract any PC. The consequence of such

virus is serious and even destroying the whole computer system. Its cost can notmeasure with money. In order to secure PC from viruses, we need anti-virus and the

    16

    17/18

    Unit 34 by Aaron Sanghera

anti-virus must be updated regularly. We can use auto update option to update

antivirus automatically. We need to configure the anti-virus in a way that it can

provide high level of security at all time-

Set up antivirus in the start up so that it can scan while system starts

Scan or appear antivirus browser on the screen as soon as any USM memory

stick or memory device is connected to computer Scan first if any email attachment is open

Making a schedule at least once per week for full scan

Update antivirus regularly or make sure it is updated automatically while the

    computer is connected to internet

Firewall is another security measure that protects computer from hackers or

unauthorised person. Firewall keeps track of all incoming and outgoing users and

allow users to set parameters to secure computer better than antivirus.

Sometimes user gets trap into or gets connection with hacker computer due to makingsome mistakes such as clicking on an icon without knowing its consequence or

pressing any button to remove a popup window and so on. In this case, hackers get all

information from the connected PC though antivirus is still works in the PC.

Connecting with such remote PC or hacker PC, the user of the PC lost control of the

PC and provide all necessary information to the hackers including user name,

password and credit card details. In this case, a small software is installed

automatically to the connected PC and it passes all information to the hacker PC. In

order to avoid such situation, user needs to be careful while any popup comes on the

screen an/or click on an icon. The affected PC should be scanned by anti spy ware

    software.

In order to make a website highly secure, the server PC (either your server PC or from

where you have bought web space) must be secured. It must have antivirus, anti

hacker, fire wall and anti spy ware installed and configured correctly. The PC must be

    monitored regularly.

We can use strong password to protect unauthorised person to come in or use any

system. The password must be changed regularly. We should change it at least once a

month or once every fortnight. We should not set a password that can be memorised

easily or very hard to remember. The best thing is to combine upper case and lower

case with few numeric or digits such as DksFqg21 or PQrsgd3xA. Setting a

memorable word such as United, themes or Friday or any personal information suchas name or address as password is the weakest type of password. This can be

recovered by a hacker easily. If a user doesnt change password for long time, the

browser or system should notify the user and/or force to change after a certain time

    period.

Maintaining multiple servers for an e-commerce website. If one crashes, other can

take over at any time without any interruption. For different domain, we can use

different server. The server computer must have strong security to avoid virus and

hackers treats. Server computer must have firewall protection. We need to setup

firewall in a way that it can protect all threats coming from unknown hackers or set

security level high enough to overcome all threats.

The business can use webhotsing services to find where the most threats come from

and take appropriate actions to secure the site.
