Find out from your classmates where they have seen them. Use the list below to help you.

Look at the picture and answer the question:

What do you think is happening in the picture?

Killer whales are attacking a baleen whale with whalers waiting by in their boat,harpoon at the ready.

(2)Read the words on the left side of the picture. Then answer the questions:1.What does anecdote mean? Have you got its meaning from the dictionary?

It means a short story based on your personal experience.

2.So what are the main characters of the story?

Whalers, killer whales and baleen whales.

Scan the text and fill in the blanks with their names:

Read the text again and answer the questions.

1. When did Clancy begin to believe that the killers would help the whalers catch the huge whales?

2. How did the killers help the whalers catch the whale?

After he witnessed it with his own eyes, many times.

A pack of about six killers attacked the whale. Some of them threw themselves on top of the whale`s blow-hole to stop it breathing. Others stopped it fleeing out to sea.

In groups, describe the relationship between Old Tom and the whalers. What other animals help out humans in hunting?

Language tips

they will do it or it will happen very soon eg. We were about to go home, when the storm came.

g, the latter is used in the passive form.
