Ian Wilmut, a Scottish scientist who created Dolly and was shocked when hearing some scientists were considering cloning human beings. He never intends to create copy of humans. Instead, he thinks the efforts of scientists should be directed towards creating new cells and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer.

Page 21: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

Faye Wilson, a woman of 41 years old who cannot have a baby. She is desperate to have a baby of his own, a child that is genetically related to her.

Severino Antinori, an Italian doctor, is one of the leaders in the cloning research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.

An announcement about the first cloned human embryo caused much debate. The first cloned mammal was Dolly. Ian Wilmut is shocked that some scientists are considering cloning human beings.A woman wants to have a cloned baby.Cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, but some scientists still want to clone human beings.Chinese scientists continue to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.

Read fast and decide T or F.

1. People all over the world are happy

about the idea of cloning human

beings.

2. Dolly, the first cloned

mammal, is exactly the same as other

sheep. 3. According to

the article, the scientist who created

Dolly does not agree with cloning

human beings.

4. Cloning can be used to cure diseases

because it can produce new tissues and

organs.

5. Colin Jake is against cloning humans,

just like Pauline Carter.

6. Cloning human beings is illegal in

many countries, so no scientists want to

clone human beings.

Dear Editor,

I

read your article about human

_______with great concern. I first heard

of cloning animals from a single

____when I went to a seminar about

Dolly the sheep, who was

___________cloned in 1996, in Britain.

At the time I thought that the whole

concept of cloning was________.

Why do some people think they have

the _____ to go against nature? Who

will be responsible for the possible

with nature, we might create problems.

It seems that I was correct — your

article says that Dolly died at a much

Also I can’t accept the idea of cloning

_______. We have no right to experim

Language points

1. On the other hand, many people, including some scientists, disagree and fear that if mankind interferes with nature in this way, they would be on their way to producing a real-life Frankenstein’s monster.

Page 34: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

on (the) one hand, on the other hand On the one hand, rapid development of th

e economy will improve the living conditi

ons of the people. On the other hand it wi

ll speed up environmental destruction.

Page 35: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

2. I don’t want to adopt someone else’s

child and I don’t want to use another

woman’s egg —I want a child that is ge

netically related to me.

Page 36: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

He adopted the orphan.

Can a school adopt the policy prohibiting

the use of mobile phones on campus?

Page 37: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

2) be related to “ 与……关联, 与……有联系” 如:In his essay, the author writes about how

art is related to culture.

Page 38: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

3. Most of the time it turns out that hum

ans are not really profiting when they da

mage the environment.

Page 39: Unit 3 Science Versus Nature Welcome to the unit.

It was a difficult time, but eventually things turned out fine. That guy turned out to be my friend’s brother. To my surprise, it turned out that I was wrong.
