TV INDUSTRY jobs

A television director is usually responsible for directing the actors and other filmed aspects of a television production. The role differs from that of a film director because the major creative control usually belongs to the producer. In general, actors and other regular artists on a show are familiar enough with their roles that the director's input is confined to technical issues.

Make-up artist

A professional make-up artist is usually a cosmetology beautician, and applies makeup to anyone who appears on screen. They concentrate on the area above the chest, the face, the top of the head, the fingers, hands, arms, and elbows.

The Writer creates and moulds an original story, or adapts other written, told, or acted stories for production of a television show. Their finished work is called a script. A script may also have been a contribution of many writers, so it is the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) task to designate who gets the credit as 'the Writer'.

TV INDUSTRY DEFINITION AND KEY COMPANIES

The UK industry is dominated by the major broadcasters, plus a much larger number of less well-known broadcasters and production companies. There are nine so-called terrestrial broadcasters, whose output is broadcast through land-based transmitters. They include the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, S4C, SMG and UTV. These companies are also called Public Service Broadcasters, with a range of obligations set out in their licences, and in the case of the BBC in its Charter.

TV INDUSTRY GOVERNING BODY

Ofcom is the communications regulator.

they regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.

They make sure that people in the UK get the best from their communications services and are protected from scams and sharp practices, while ensuring that competition can thrive.

Ofcom operates under the Communications Act 2003. This detailed Act of Parliament spells out exactly what Ofcom should do – we can do no more or no less than is spelt out in the Act.

The Act says that Ofcom’s general duties should be to further the interests of citizens and of consumers. Meeting these two duties is at the heart of everything we do.

Accountable to Parliament, we are involved in advising and setting some of the more technical aspects of regulation, implementing and enforcing the law.

Ofcom is funded by fees from industry for regulating broadcasting and communications networks, and grant-in-aid from the Government.

Following the merger, the magazine was successful with increased sales and subscriptions.

RADIO JOBS

Administration - General Manager

The General Manager (GM) sits atop the food chain at most radio stations, according to the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Guide to Radio Careers. In order to get this gig, you will need to work in radio for a while. Most GMs rise through the ranks of either sales or programming to the top spot.

Programming - Program Director

Radio programming departments used to employ three people: an operations manager, a program director, and an assistant program director. As station consolidation has taken hold, though, most stations simply have a program director, who is often in charge of programming at multiple stations.

On-Air Staff/Production

Many radio stations, particularly talk radio stations, have news departments. The news department is run by a news director. The news director, in most cases, anchors newscasts on the station. He manages a staff of news anchors and reporters. Some stations employ individuals who solely report on sports. A sports reporter anchors sportscasts on a station and also covers local teams.

Demand for printed products has continued to grow. This is despite predictions of a reduction, as a result of the impact of electronic media. A large part of the 2004 figure for total UK sales was from sales of advertising literature, books, brochures and leaflets. The printing industry uses the latest technology. It needs bright, creative, enthusiastic people with wide ranging skills. PRINT INDUSTRY CASE STUDY

Printing is a process for reproducing text and images, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. It is often carried out as a large-scale industrial process, and is an essential part of publishing and transaction printing.

The earliest form of printing was woodblock printing , with existing examples from China dating to before 220 A.D. and Egypt to the fourth century. Later developments in printing include the movable type, first developed by Bi Sheng in China, and the printing press, a more efficient printing process for western languages with their more limited alphabets , developed by Johannes Gutenberg in the fifteenth century.
