Surge of Immigration After 1965 America was founded by immigrants and immigrants are still a key

foundation to the success of America today. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill that has changed the

way immigrants are let into America. This bill was the Immigration Act of 1965. The point of this act was so future immigrants were to be welcomed

because of their abilities, not their country of origin. The Immigration Act was responsible for the enormous amount of

immigration in the 20th century, and also contributed to the growing Latin American and Asian populations in the United States.

Most immigrants don’t arrive from Europe as they did in the past. The majority of new immigrants since 1950 have been female. Before the 1965 immigration act, the average immigrant had lower

education or skill levels than Americans, but recently the general education/skill level has been high.

Sunbelt Migration The growing success of the area known as the Sunbelt is because of

the immigrants looking for jobs from Central and South America. The Sunbelt is the region of the United States that is across the

southern and southwestern parts of the country from Florida to California.

The term Sunbelt was not used until 1969, but growth had been occurring in the south since World War II.

Many industries from the northeast moved down to the Sunbelt states.

The Sunbelt population grew enormously because of the immigration from the neighboring country of Mexico.

Many immigrants were looking for a job, and with so many factories set up in the Sunbelt, it was a safe place to find employment.

Most immigrants would work for less money than an American born citizen.

The “Graying” of America Advancements in medicine has extended the life of many

Americans, but with people living longer it actually hurts the economy of the U.S.

The citizens of the U.S. are living longer and healthier lives, but this causes strain on government programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

People age 50 and over are 24% of the American population, this causes the American economy to go down because of the extra money spent on government help programs.

The American economy will never be stable with the medical advancements of today. Our only choices to fix this is to give less money to the elderly through government programs, or have every citizen pay more taxes.

Biotechnology

The science of biotechnology is a controversial subject but it is necessary for the continuing advancement of American scientific discoveries.

The Ford Memorandum of 1976 allowed certain controversial researches, such as recombinant DNA

Reagan’s agenda for biotechnology was to increase the funding and promote safe and private research.

More recently President Bush has shown support for scientific research by increasing funding and supporting a national education system.

In 1997, the Clinton administration proposed a very controversial legislation, which included cloning.

These advancements in Biotechnology create new jobs and innovations for the American people.

Mass Communication

Mass communication is an important factor to the growth of American jobs and creates a sense of global unity.

The revolutions in communication caused a surge of new inventions and ideas, including the PC and networking.

With advancements in communication technology, the industries end up needing less employees which results in loss of jobs.

But global communication makes it where citizens can find a job internationally.

Upgrades to cellular phone systems, and internet technology happen everyday.

Computers

Like communication, computers also opened up new jobs for American people, and continues to do so today.

Following the communication revolution, there was a lot of interest in computers.

Computers made jobs easier and created opportunities for new jobs to open up.

PC’s and networks emerged from the computer revolution, which in turn created a global relationship between other nations.

People like Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs have been the leading forces in the growth of computer technology.

Politics

Politics In a Multicultural Society Multiculturalism can cause

issues in politics, but can create even more difficulties in the education system of America.

“From a political standpoint, multicultural embraces non-mainstream language speakers, immigrants and some sub-cultures.”

Multiculturalism heavily affects politics and education.

Issues of multiculturalism in education are educating children that speak other languages, should the education system have to accommodate to the language and culture of these people.

Issues in politics are that these groups are not included in political powers with direct representation.
