What is a Wave?

•Wave: The Movement of energy through a body of water

• Most waves form when winds blowing across the water’s surface

transmit their energy to the water

Wave Properties

Wave Size:•Waves start in open ocean•The size of wave depends on:

1. Strength of Wind2. Length of blowing3. Distance

Parts of a Wave

• Crest• Trough• Wave Height• Wave Length• Frequency

Parts of a Wave

• What would the wave look like if you shortened the wave height? Made it higher?

• What would the wave look like if you increased the wavelength?

Breakers

•Near the shore, wave height increases and wavelength decreases•Friction between the ocean floor and water causes waves to slow down and the shape to change• This is called “Breakers”

• The Blue Planet: Episode 1 Video (Netflix)

Wave Simulator

•What is the frequency of a wave?

•Wave Simulator

Circular Motion of Water Particles

•Water particles don’t move very much due to waves (we’ll talk about how they move far when we get to currents)

•Water particles move in a circular motion• They move forward slightly, then down and around with the wave

• This circle gets smaller with deeper water

• Hallway Demo!

What happens when waves run into each other?• When a crest and a trough of 2 waves run into each other, they

cancel out, which makes

• When a crest and a crest of 2 waves run into each other, they make a bigger wave

Tsunamis

•Read the Article about Tsunamis and highlight important facts while you read• Things to look out for:• What causes a Tsunami?• Are Tsunamis just one big wave?• How can we predict Tsunamis?• Why does the water recede just before the big wave reaches

land?• Why do Tsunamis grow so tall?
