19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy that have been used to modify the physical environment

19B Analyze ways technological innovations such as air conditioning and desalinization have allowed humans to adapt to places

19C Examine the environment, economic, and social impacts of advances in technology on agriculture and natural resources

Desalination Plant

A desalination plant converts saltwater into drinking water

Why are desalination plants even needed?

Where is one place in the world where they SHOULD have LOTS of desalination plant?

Do you think desalination plant are a good idea?

Florida has some plants in operation

California has around 1 plant up and operating and another coming online soon. They keep proposing for plants, have done this for the last 20 years but not much follow through.

What area of the world does it show most of the plants already built?

Why do you think California has been dragging their feet at building more desalination plants?

Looking at the projections, do you see any problems for California's future?

Consumption

Consumption is talking about how much energy is used.

The IEA tacks energy consumption (International energy Agency) along with the EIA (US Energy Information Administration) and the European Environment Agency.

What does consumption mean?

Do you think most Americans have a lower or higher consumption that people that live on an island?

Do you think people should haveconsumption limits? Why or why not?

Are you surprised by the graph? why or why not?

Green Revolution

The Green Revolution is.....the practices of farming that changed between 1930 and 1960. Our agriculture in the US is now producing much more crops that it did before (although they are using countless pesticides and herbicides to do it). Irrigation is also key in the Green Revolution.

Considering they are using manymore pesticides, is the name “Green Revolution” misleading?

What can long-term pesticides do to your body?

Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels are typically considered non-renewable since it can take hundreds of years to millions of years to replace them. Texas a has a lot of oil and natural gas deposits.

Coal (comes from the remains of dead plants millions ofyears ago)

What is coal from?

What is natural gas from?

Page 5: UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET - Palmer ISD · 2016. 11. 13. · UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET 19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy

Natural Gas (comes from organisms....aquatic things that died)

OIL (comes from organisms ....aquatic...used to live in the water millions of years ago)

Does your Bar-B-Que Grill run oncharcoal or natural gas?

Do you use natural gas at your house or is everything electric?

What 2 fossil fuels does Texas a have a lot of?

Chernobyl

Chernobyl is a nuclear power plant that melted down in Russia. It happened on April 26, 1986. We still don't knowhow many people it killed since the death certificates did not state death due to radiation..but cancer or liver failure instead. For nine days straight the radiation plumes went into the air.

Some of the sheep in Scotland still can't be sold, because of the radiation from Chernobyl.

Which country did Chernobyl happen in?

Would you live near Chernobyl?

Who is still being affected today from Chernobyl?

Does it look like they just abandoned everything and left?

Three Mile Island

Three Mile Island is a nuclear facility in the United States that partially melted down march 28, 1979 (Pennsylvania). The public wasn't informed right away.

Why do you think they didn't inform the public...right when it happened?

Would you be very angry if you had lived up there and they didn't tell you...right when it happened?

If there was a major issue today (maybe even worse) would they tell you?

St. Lawrence Seaway

St. Lawrence Seaway is a ....system of locks, canals and andchannels in the US / Canada ....that allow ocean vessels to go from the ocean to the Great Lake region.

Do you think it helps transportation costs by having the St. Lawrence Seaway?

Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is a....waterway in Panama that connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The US had intervened in the politics of Panama and saw that the canal was built. The Panama government was giving us a cheaper rate to use the canal but now we have a much higher price.

What is the Panama Canal?

Did the US intervene in the politics of Panama?

Do you think we should have interfered with another country? Why or why not?

Do you think it save a load of money to cut through the Canal or would it be cheaper just to goaround?

Solar Power

Solar power is the direction many countries in Europe are trying to go towards. Solar panels can be seen on the Autobahn in Germany. Spain however, decided to tax its resident for the solar power that they made and that they then used on their houses.

Solar power utilizes the sun to convert its energy into usable energy.

Do you you think it is ODD that Spain is taxing its residents that have solar panels?

Wind Power

Wind power uses windmills to turn the turbines and produce energy.

Green Mountain energy is one of the power companies in the area that uses windmills to generate energy.

Wind energy can affect government radar and can kill birds. Also some residents that live near the factory farms, said the humming noise sometimes causes them headaches.

Do you think wind power is the way to go or solar power?

If there was a house for sale near a wind farm, would you immediately buy it or talk to your potential neighbors?

Steam Power

Steam power revolutionized the modern world. The railroads took off after steam power was mastered. The Trans-Siberian Railroad goes across Russia to Siberia.

Why do you think steam power revolutionized the world?

what took off after steam powerwas mastered?

Diesel Machinery

A diesel engine is a machine with an internal combustion engine. Diesel engines work by only compressing the air.

While gasoline vehicles are like 30% efficient, diesel engines tend to be more effective at like 45% efficiency,

What is a diesel engine?

Page 11: UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET - Palmer ISD · 2016. 11. 13. · UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET 19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy

which gives them more power to haul things.

They use “heavy fuel”. Their fuel tends to cost more than gasoline during many times of the year.

Their engines tend to last at least twice as long as engines that need gasoline.

Some diesel machines are running on Biodiesel now.

What do diesel engines smell like.....?

Do you think it is good that some diesel machines are running on Bio fuel such as soy?

Electricity

Electricity is the flow of electric charge (electrons). Tesla Thomas Edison , George Westinghouse, and Samuel Morsewere all MAJOR contributors to getting electricity to your lives.

Electricity has changed lives around the world.

Who do you need to all thank for having the type of electric power that we have today?

State of the UNIT (Kentucky)

The state of the unit this week is over Kentucky

FACTS==known as the Bluegrass state because of the grass that is found of its fields. It is very green grass when it matures and is in half the lawns in Suburbia but when it has seeds....they are of a bluish color.

==Known for: horse racing, coal, bluegrass music, college basketball, and Kentucky Fried Chicken

Why in the world do they get it bluegrass?

Is the grass grown a lot?

What some of the things Kentucky is known for?

Draw the outline of Kentucky AND label the areas

Describe its borders?

Page 13: UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET - Palmer ISD · 2016. 11. 13. · UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET 19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy

Climate: Humid sub-tropical

Temp: summer highs of 87°F winter can get as low as 23°F

Borders: Has rivers running on 3 of its borders (Mississippi River, Big Sandy River. and Tug Fork)

Country of the UNIT (Germany) What subject should you not bring up when talking to a German?

What type of government do they have?

Page 14: UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET - Palmer ISD · 2016. 11. 13. · UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET 19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy

The country of the unit this week is over Germany.

Many Germans feel rather bad (very sensitive) about the history of Germany and do not bring up the subject, if you run into someone that has German citizenship.

==Government is a Federal Parliamentary republic located in central-western Europe.

==Are a heavy player in the European Union

==Climate: temperate seasonal climate

==Land: 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 square miles)

==People (80,722,792) World FACTBOOK

==it is one of the most “highly desired” immigration population places in Europe....due to benefits given

=Capital: Berlin

==used to be called Germania (Barbarian tribes lived there)

==1933 (they established a national socialist party) which led thinks downhill into World War I.

==After Germany lost World War II (they were split into 2 states)....which they kept until 1990.

==Berlin Air lift was an event when the Americans droppedoff via the air.....food and supplies for the people of Berlin after they had been cut off from supplies for a very long. time.

=In 1517 ....in a German place called Wittenberg....a monk.....(Martin Luther) wrote ....The Ninety-Five Theses which challenged the Holy Roman Church and started the Protestant Reformation.

==Has one of the top 5 economies in the world

What do you think heavy player in the European Union means?

How much land do they have?

What was blamed for getting them into World War I?

What happened after World War II?

How did Germany get famous (religiously)?

Page 15: UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET - Palmer ISD · 2016. 11. 13. · UNIT 12 VOCAB PACKET 19A Evaluate the significance of major technological innovations in the areas of transportation and energy

How is Germany doing now?

Do you think it was smart of them to put up a solar array on the roof of the tunnel? Why or why not?
