Unit 10 SOLUTION CHEMISTRY!
Unit 10SOLUTION CHEMISTRY!
What is a solution?A solution is an answer to a problem.ORA solution is a homogenous mixture of 2 or
more substances.
Solutions have two parts to them…Solute: the substance that is being dissolved.
Ex: SALT (NaCl), Chocolate!Solvent: the substance that is doing the
dissolvingEx:WATER , Milk
WATERWater is known as the Universal Solvent
It is known as this because of polarityThe hydrogens have a partially positive chargeThe oxygen has a partially negative charge
More WaterWhen water acts as the solvent the process is
called hydration. When you are deHYDRATED that means you
haven’t had enough WATER
Solvation If another substance acts as the solvent the
process is called solvation, which means the solvent surrounds the solute and pulls it apart making it dissolve.
Concentration and SolubilityA solution can be measured by its
concentration. There are three basic measurements of solubility.
Saturated SolutionsSaturated means the solution contains the
maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solution.
Supersaturated SolutionsSupersaturated means the solution contains
more than the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in the solution.
Unsaturated SolutionsAn unsaturated solution means it contains
very little solute.
Saturated
SUPER saturated

Saturated
To dissolve or not to dissolve….Not all solutes are able to dissolve in solvents
If a solute DOES NOT dissolve is a solvent it is called immiscible
If a solute DOES dissolve in a solvent it is called miscible
