This is a sector that the UK government has seen potential in and thus has seen it fit to develop this sector within the UK as there is potential for the UK to become world class in another area of the world. Due to the potential that Esports has for the UK back in 2016 the BEA or British Esports Association that is a non-profit-organisation was founded in order to help popularise as well as manage and supply Esports competitions and teams around the UK in order to develop the sector. The BEA mainly focus on smaller start up teams in order to help diversify and expand the industry with such endeavours to encourage the creation of Esports teams in schools and colleges across the UK and to host tournaments for them to compete in in order for players and organisations to be able to make a name for themselves with the chance that they will be scouted for Esport teams and potentially even Teams that are managed directly by the UK and compete in events against other nations like Germany, the United states of America and south Korea just to mention a couple nations. The DCMS or the Department for Digital, culture, media & Sport is responsible for the cultural development of the UK for a governmental standpoint and so due to Esports being commented on by the government as “Esports has the potential to develop as an area of real national strength in the UK,” this means that the DCMS is invested in the further development of Esports within the UK As if the government is interested in it so is the DCMS. The main issue with Esports in the UK is that fact that is still not considered a Sport but is considered a Game and so this really doesn’t benefit the UK Esport scene.

Unit 1 – What is Esports?
P1,P2,M1,D1 – Understand the organisation of esports and traditional sports
industry’s in the UK and globally
Esports is the act of playing games at a professional level in organised tournaments and games in
order of the purpose of entrainment but also for financial gain though sponsorships and tournament
winnings. This is a sector that the UK government has seen potential in and thus has seen it fit to
develop this sector within the UK as there is potential for the UK to become world class in another
area of the world. Due to the potential that Esports has for the UK back in 2016 the BEA or British
Esports Association that is a non-profit-organisation was founded in order to help popularise as well
as manage and supply Esports competitions and teams around the UK in order to develop the sector.
The BEA mainly focus on smaller start up teams in order to help diversify and expand the industry
with such endeavours to encourage the creation of Esports teams in schools and colleges across the
UK and to host tournaments for them to compete in in order for players and organisations to be able
to make a name for themselves with the chance that they will be scouted for Esport teams and
potentially even Teams that are managed directly by the UK and compete in events against other
nations like Germany, the United states of America and south Korea just to mention a couple
nations. The DCMS or the Department for Digital, culture, media & Sport is responsible for the
cultural development of the UK for a governmental standpoint and so due to Esports being
commented on by the government as “Esports has the potential to develop as an area of real
national strength in the UK,” this means that the DCMS is invested in the further development of
Esports within the UK As if the government is interested in it so is the DCMS. The main issue with
Esports in the UK is that fact that is still not considered a Sport but is considered a Game and so this
national strength in the UK” indicates the interest of the government for the Esports industry to
expand within the UK but despite this interest the fact that Esports is still considered a game legally
and isn’t under the same regulation’s and support as sport this hinders the expansion as this limits
the funding that is available for Esports and due to it not being considered a sport this also means
that most thing related to Esports in the UK are non-profit organizations that work together but due
to their being little government intervention besides the BEA that is still limited in its power
comparted to the sport departments in the UK. Overall when it comes to the structure and
organization of Esports within the UK while I feel that the early steps have been taken successfully
for the foreseen expansion of Esports I still think that a lot of work is required if the Government
wants the UK to take a leading position in the Global Esports Sphere of influence.
When it comes to evaluating the Global structure and organisation of Esports I found this topic
rather interesting to research as it is nice to see the wide variety of nations and city states around
the globe that are seeing the potential of Esports and are taking the necessary steps in order for it to
continue to grow at an incredible rate. When it comes to nations that are heavily involved in Esports
it is nice to see the wide range of country’s and all of them not being nations you expect to see with
nations like Denmark, Poland and Singapore taking the necessary steps to further Esports inside of
their countries with Denmark doing particularly well with the development of their Esports industry.
The main thing that needs to happen for the popularity of Esports to further increase is to make the
viewership of Esports more accessible as this is one of the main issues that Esports has in a large
majority of countries like the UK compared to south Korea and the USA as Esports has been televised
in these counties before as I have even seen Esports on TV when I went on holiday to the States and
this was the Overwatch league being televised and it was refreshing to see.
As on overall statement on the current situation regarding the structure and organisation of Esports
in the UK and globally I feel that a lot of nations are making good steps in the development of the
industry but in some nations like the UK the issue of what to classify what Esports is and it not being recognised as a sport is really holding back the expansion of industry in those selective nations.
P3,P4,M2,D2 – Examine genres of esports games titles played by professional
and grassroots esports teams and tournaments
Esport Teams
London Spitfire is a Overwatch professional team who’s most documented success was their victory
in the first Overwatch league tournament that earned them a reputations for being a well-oiled
machine of a team but after the first Season of the Overwatch league sadly London Spitfire were not
able to keep their victory’s coming and so only did alright admittedly and that for the mean time has
been their performance ever since as the players that previously brought them success went ahead
and joined different teams by around the 2 Season really none of the original members of London
spitfires remained and this has been reflected in their performance not matching their reputation.
For an example of a grassroots team inside the UK a particular team in Exeter college is showing
great potential being called Centurian.eXe as this is a team that I am personally involved in as it is
one of the Exeter college Overwatch teams. With two main tournament games played and with
these two matches being victories for Centurian with the first gaming being 3 : 1 and the second
game being a 3 : 0 this sets up Centurian on a good path for successes as these victories have done
nothing but brought the team closer together and improve their ability to work together as a team.

When it comes to an example of a Globally based team a good example of a very highly rated team
is that of Astralis who are mainly known for their CS:GO victories of which there are many. Founded
in 2016 after being rebranded from Team Questionmark. Astralis wins their first major competition
the following year after coming so close to victory many times with their 2 -1 defeat of Virtus.pro in
the Eleague major and from their go onto win again in 2018 in the grand finale of FACEIT and then
even more winning two separate competitions in 2019 both of them being 2 – 0 victory’s.

Due to the previously mentioned teams I feel it is only right to discuss the structure of the
Overwatch league. Overwatch league is done by having all teams that compete go against each
other to fight for positions in two divisions and then teams compete in those divisions where they
can be eliminated. In total for a season 20 teams are put into Division 1 or division 2 depending on
how they did in the matches prior.
Esports tournaments
When it comes to typical Esport competitions that are streamed or televised are often played LAN or
as it’s known as Local Area Network and this is achieved through the use of connecting the PC
together or to a local server with Ethernet net cables and this allows for the fastest connection
between PC as there is no need for the game to connect over the internet as this could result in ping
issues but this might be needed for online tournaments like the games the BEA set up as with this is
done online as it is a country wide completion this is required for it to work. The issue with online
tournaments is that it requires every player to have a similar internet speed as if a player is lagging
this can completely loss the match for them in a game like overwatch where everyone has to be
playing to their best ability.
When talking about Esports championships and tournaments it would be wrong to not mention the
League of legends world championship as this is the largest Esports event in Esports at least in the
west. The way that the league of legends tournaments work is enough though two formats those
being a Single elimination match so the idea that what every team loss a match they are then out of
