LETTER FROM CHRISTINE

UNISON’S BOARD & STAFF

Every season brings the best of art, music, theatre, and dance to Unison’s stage or Gallery walls. This fall is no exception and I can already smell the crisp snap of autumn in the air.

According to a recent study by SUNY New Paltz, the arts bring $500 million per year in economic benefits to our region. “Every dollar spent by arts and culture organizations and their audiences cycles through the … regional economies, generating business and creating jobs…We show that arts and culture in our region is good for both our spirits and our pocketbooks.” Clearly, the community that invests locally in the arts invests

in itself. When audiences support local arts organizations, they are not only creating their own experiences and memories, they are also giving back to the community. Our audiences understand how important a vibrant arts venue is to their community.

I am excited to share our fall line-up, featuring performances by artists of the caliber of Christine lavin, Amy Fradon, leslie Ritter and laurel Massé as well as great programs like Animal Experiences and it’s Magic! for family audiences, Tango Meets Swing, a Country Dance and Cleoma’s Cajun String Band for dancers, Big Joe Fitz, Martha Gallagher, Mik & Gilles, Mohonk Mountain Stage Company and a brand new series Voices of the American Musical Theatre.

I can’t wait for this fall season to begin! Anything can happen up here on the mountain. And will. Join us — often.

SATURDAY EVENING PERFORMANCES CONTINUED

Amy Fradon and leslie Ritter will present their unique “If the Everly Brothers had sisters” transcendent harmonies and sing a mix of original and cover songs in the folk/blues/singer-songwriter tradition from their three acclaimed CDs.

Known as “The Adirondack Harper,” singer/songwriter Martha Gallagher’s songs glide from blues to Latin grooves to classical, from Jazz to contemporary folk. Wanda Fischer from WAMC says, “Martha plays the harp with a joie de vivre; with a sense of joy and energy rarely seen with this instrument!”

Chicago native David Roth has been featured on many of Christine Lavin’s compilations. His songs have been sung at Carnegie Hall, the United Nations and the Kennedy Center. Peter Yarrow raved, “David has reached into our hearts. With voices like his still singing, the candle will remain lit . . .”

Voices of the American Musical Theatre presents Ya Got Me: Songs for Two or Three. Elegant duets and trios from the uniquely American canon of the musical theatre songbook will be performed in Unison’s cabaret setting, featuring local favorites Molly Parker-Myers, Kevin Archambault and Vicki howland.

Community contra and square dance: Simple, energetic dances to lively fiddle music with American and Celtic roots, led by local caller Eric hollman. Don’t miss this dance party with friends and neighbors!

Dubbed “Idiots Savant, Sans the Savant” by Modern Immaturity magazine, the increasingly decrepit duo of Mikhail horowitz & Gilles Malkine return to Unison with their incomprehensible brand of comedy and will gleefully eviscerate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the Solstice season, Maundy Thursday and National Topiary Day.

MMSC: READERS THEATRE

The personal and the political are indistinguishable in American playwright George Brant's gripping one-woman play about a hot-rod fighter pilot whose unexpected pregnancy ends her career in the sky. Starring Janet nurre, directed by Christine Crawfis.

Somewhere in America in a suburban chain restaurant on an average night, Sam and Nicole meet for a drink. Sparks fly, setting in motion the extraordinary tale of five generations of an ordinary family with the moments, both mundane and milestone, that make a life.
