Before you say “I do,” there’s a lot to consider. What kind of flowers should you choose (p.33)? When
should you book your honeymoon (p.23)? What dress should you wear as you leave your reception (see
three suggestions on page 11)? Then, after the vows have been exchanged and all the guests have
gone home, there’s still the business of changing your name (p.15). This issue of UNIONS is dedicated
to all the details. You’ll find a planning timeline (p.23), a silhouette how-to (p.29) and a few big-
day ideas we love (p.17). And, if you’re still deciding on the style of your wedding, consider taking
your cues from four couples whose rustic weddings let their love take center
stage (p.53). Sure, you’ve got a few things to think about, but try to relax. Your
biggest decision—the one that truly matters—is already behind you.—Caite White

BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO?Meredith Heiderman wears a Angie beaded scallop tank dress from Bittersweet ($86, 977-5977), Stuart Weitzman slingbacks from Scarpa ($360, 296-0040), and Molly Dingledine gold vermeille earrings with pearls from Angelo ($175, 971-9256).
Time to shineStrictly speaking, opting to change into
a getaway dress after the reception is
just another excuse to buy a pretty outfit
for your wedding day. But it’s also a
tradition worth looking into. Changing
into a new dress to leave for the
honeymoon symbolizes a transition—
the start of a new life. Historically,
the going-away dress featured sailboats,
anchors, or horseshoes. These days, we
think shimmer and sequins do the trick.
Here are three vintage-inspired sparklers
to send you on your way.—Caite White

DID YOU KNOW?The ring finger was once believed to be the only finger with a vein directly connected to the heart. That’s one of the reasons why your wedding ring gets placed there.
Full floweredWater retention is not something you want on your wedding day—unless you’re talking about the floral arrangements. Consider succulents, those fat plants that adapt to many climates and store H2O like it’s their job (because it kind of is), for your bouquets, boutonnieres or centerpieces. And, good news—they’ll look just as perky at the end of the night as they did when you first set them on the table.—C.W.
What’s your name again?
If you plan to change your last name af-ter you say “I do,” here are the key folks you’ll want to inform.
Social Security. Your number won’t change, but your card will. Fill out and print an application (www.ssa.gov) and grab a certified copy of your marriage re-cord (from the Circuit Court clerk’s of-fice) or your original marriage certificate. Either mail or take these to your local So-cial Security office. A spiffy new card will
arrive in your mailbox within 10 business days and, unlike your wedding, it won’t cost you a dime.
DMV. To update your driver’s license, take your current license and a copy of your marriage certificate or record to the DMV. Bring 10 bucks and pray no one makes you parallel park for a score.
Registrar’s Office. You can’t rock the vote with the wrong name, so take a minute to call your registrar’s office.—Taylor Harris

It’s all fun and gamesWorried what your guests will do while you’re nabbing a few glamour shots? Con-sider providing some games—like bocce ball, croquet or even cornhole—to keep them entertained until you can make your big entrance as husband and wife. Plus, it’s fun for the kids. Says bride Tassie Chou, “We had a number of children at the wedding. It was a great reward for them after sitting so patiently through the ceremony.”—C.W.

If you’ve just gotten engaged, no doubt you’re both excited and daunted by the task of planning your wedding. UNIONS says, “Relax!” Use this helpful timeline to cross a few early tasks off your list (and wait some months to start stressing about others).—C.W.
ONE YEAR BEFORE Work out your budget. Know how much you have to spend (and how much your parents might be willing to contribute) before considering much else.
Decide on your wedding style and for- mality. This may be determined, in part, by how many guests you want to invite, so think about the guest list now, too.
Set a tentative date for your wedding.
Start shopping for wedding rings.
Choose your bridal party and invite them to be part of your special day.
Decide where you’ll tie the knot. Are you headed to the chapel or the backyard of your childhood home? Put down a deposit for the reception location.
Choose and reserve your officiant. And, while you’re at it, check his or her avail- ability for the night of the rehearsal dinner.
If your reception venue doesn’t have a caterer, decide who’ll provide the food.
Decide on a rehearsal dinner location.
Shop for your dress. It may seem too soon, but it can take several months for your dress to arrive, and then you may need several fittings.
After you’ve found the perfect dress, schedule fittings and a delivery date.
Select the bridesmaids’ gowns. These’ll take a few months to come in, too. (There’s usually a “rush order” option if you can’t decide until it’s too late, but keep in mind that there will likely be an extra charge.)
Begin the search for other wedding vendors (for transportation, flowers, invitations, and music, for example). Photographers and videographers get booked early, so start there first.
Start thinking about honeymoon destinations.

NINE MONTHS BEFORE Start finalizing the guest list and gathering addresses.
Choose where you’d like to register and go together to select gifts.
Decide to rent or purchase the groom and groomsmen’s attire. Once that’s decided, place your order. (Also schedule his fittings and pick-up or delivery date at this time.)
Finalize all the vendors and secure your wedding date by putting down deposits. (While you’re at it, confirm when final payments need to be made to each vendor.) Now that you have the date, you can order invitations!
Send out save-the-dates.
Once you’ve chosen your wedding photographer, schedule your engagement photo session.
Finalize the plans for your honeymoon. Update your passport and vaccinations, if necessary.
SIX MONTHS BEFORE Prepare all maps and directions for the ceremony and reception.
Meet with your florist and choose arrangements for the ceremony and reception, as well as bouquets for
you and your bridesmaids. (For more on flowers, see page 33.)
Order your wedding cake if your caterer doesn’t provide one.
Begin doing research for your marriage license and blood tests.
Meet with both sets of parents to coordinate their day-of attire.
FOUR MONTHS BEFORE Reserve accommodations for out- of-town guests. (Consider doing this even earlier if you’re planning a wedding on busy in-town weekends
like Homecoming or other local events that draw a crowd.)
Research things to do in town during their stay.
Address and send out your invitat- ions and announcements. Include information regarding the accom- modations. (Also consider creating a website with all of the accommo-dation information. Guests might like to get a head start on making those arrangements and most hotels close your block four weeks out.)
TIMELINE continued on page 27
TIMELINE continued from page 23
Start the dress hunt right after you get engaged. Flowers can wait about six months.
Invites should go out four months before the big day.

TWO MONTHS BEFORE Make an appointment with your stylist for wedding day hair styles for you and your bridal party, as well as an appointments for manis, pedis, massages or other spa treatments.
Choose a make-up artist and schedule a trial.
Start gathering your RSVPs.
Finalize the dates for your last- minute dress fittings.
Arrange a getaway car for after the reception to include all your honeymoon essentials (luggage, tickets, etc.). (For area car rental companies, see page 29.)
Meet with all your wedding vendors to finalize any orders and reservations.
Purchase bridal party gifts (see p.18 for one great idea!) and a gift for your fiancé.
ONE MONTH BEFORE Finalize the details of your rehearsal dinner.
Go over song lists and requests with your band or DJ.
Call guests who have not responded.
Draw up preliminary seating arrangements for the reception.
Have a trial session with the hairstylist and make-up artist you will use on your wedding day.
Get your marriage license and blood tests with your fiancé.
TWO TO THREE WEEKS BEFORE
Pick up wedding rings.
Confirm all arrival times with vendors.
Confirm hotel arrangements for out-of-town guests.
Have your final dress fitting.
Finalize the seating arrangement for the reception.
ONE WEEK BEFORE Give the caterer your final guest count.
Have final fittings for groom and groomsmen.
Give gifts to your wedding party, family and fiancé privately, or at the rehearsal dinner.
Make arrangements for your wedding gifts to be brought to your “new” home.
ONE TO TWO DAYS BEFORE Get a mani/pedi.
Get a wax and a spray tan (in that order!).
Confirm flight, hotel and packing arrangements for the honeymoon.
Make payment envelopes for each vendor and give them to your wedding day assistant along with your marriage license to take care of at the wedding.
Confirm arrangements for the getaway car.
Put together a bridal emergency kit for your wedding day including stockings, sewing kit, safety pins, etc.
Attend your rehearsal dinner.
YOUR WEDDING DAY Get your hair and make-up done early.
Make sure you get plenty to eat and drink a lot of water. You don’t want to faint.
Have fun!

HOW TO:
Make asilhouetteAn excellent addition to wedding invita-tions or décor, silhouettes are a Victorian tradition. But how do you make them? Here’s a guide.
1. Take a profile photograph of your subject standing in a doorway or in front of a window, so they’re backlit.
2. Print the photograph in the size you want.
3. Cut around the subject’s head so you’re left without any background. (Don’t forget to leave a little of the shoulder area.)
4. Trace the cut-out onto black con-struction paper and cut it out again.
5. Trim the shoulder area. Get away in styleOnce the rice is thrown or the bubbles blown, how do you picture you and your spouse driving off into wedded bliss? Probably not in a minivan.
If you’re getting married in the Charlot-tesville area, you have plenty of options when it comes to getaway cars. If you’re feeling like vintage is the way to go, Albe-marle Limousine (albemarlelimousine. com) offers a fleet of antique cars, in-cluding a midnight blue 1948 Fleetwood Cadillac and silver 1946 Jaguar Mark IV.
If you’re more into a sleek, modern look, or want to provide a contempo-
rary limo for your special guests, Albe-marle Limousine also offers a line of luxury limos and SUVs. You can even request a passenger coach that seats up to 55 people.
Go sporty with a 1978 Alfa-Romeo Spi-der from Batesville’s Sports Car Rentals (sportscarrentals.com). This one comes with a soft top and CD player, too.
Or if by “vintage” you were thinking “pre-Model T,” Classic Carriage of Staun- ton (classiccarriageva.com) will whisk you away in a horse-drawn carriage or wag- on.—T.H.A

If you don’t know the difference between a calla lily and an orchid, don’t worry. A good florist will help translate your personal style into the perfect arrangements for your big day. Charlottesville florist Natalie Easterly of Flowers by Natalie describes her job as the art of interpretation. “I am the one who makes it happen the way you want it,” she says. With Easterly’s help, we’ve created a stress-free guide to get you from the florist’s studio to the altar.

Easterly suggests booking your first meet-ing with a florist one year out from your wedding date. She and others, however, do work with clients who have less time to prepare.
How long it takesPlan to spend 45-90 minutes getting to know each other.
What to bringMagazine cutouts: Bring pictures of arrange-ments you love and even those you don’t love. Florists look for repetition among these images to decipher the shapes, siz-es, and feel of what you like. Easterly also uses books and her online portfolio to see what excites the bride-to-be. Dress swatch: Your dress says a lot about you. Do you like beading and jewels or simple lines and textures? The color of your gown also plays an important role. “For instance, I would never pair off-white flowers with a white dress,” ex-plains Easterly. Planning notes: Jot down as many specif-ics as possible beforehand about your budget, the number of wedding guests you expect, the size of your bridal party, and where and when your ceremony and reception will be held. Also count the number of ushers, greeters, and special family members who will need flowers.
Cost and selectionObviously, you’ll want to know what you can get for your money. Planners often advise that couples will spend 10-15 per-cent of their budget on flowers. While some florists offer packages or price lists online, Easterly prefers to e-mail a price range to prospective clients after the con-sult. She plays with the number and type of flowers in order to meet the bride-to-be’s budget.
The type of flowers you want and wheth-er they are in season will also impact your overall cost.
Flowers by seasonFall: Hypericum, dahlias, thistle, fresh bit-tersweet, sunflowers, and berriesWinter: Hollies, roses, ivy, amaryllis, car-nations, and narcissus Spring: Peonies, daffodils, hydrangeas, sweetpeas, and magnoliasSummer: Daisies, snapdragons, poppies, orchids, and herbs Year round: Tulips, irises, and mini calla lilies
Sometimes getting the look you want means substituting your first pick for a close second. Take peonies, which peak in May or June. “I can get you peonies in July from Is-rael, but you may not like them,” Easterly explains. She holds her thumb and index finger together. “They’ll be about this big.” Instead, she would suggest ordering a gar-den rose, which has a similar form and feel.
CenterpiecesYou’ll want to choose containers for your arrangements that, like your flowers, re-flect your unique style. Easterly rents several vases and decorations, including fountains, marbleized pedestals, rustic urns, and gold candelabras. And if her client doesn’t see what she has dreamt of, Easterly will make it. Other brides choose to use their own family heir-looms or even quirky, mismatched vases for the reception.
One last lookOnce you’ve chosen every flower—even down to the hydrangea placed by your guest book—your work is not quite done. Easterly suggests you see your flowers once they arrive in-house. Roses, for example, should be in full bloom—not tight. East-erly spends the days leading up to the wedding nursing her buds.
“I think of it as the flowers are making their debut,” she says.

Evans WilsonDate of her wedding: May 30, 2010
Groom’s name: Court Nexsen
Where she got her dress: Bergdorf Goodman
Designer: Elizabeth Fillmore
How many dresses she tried on: Three
Why she chose it: I did not want a strap-less dress and I also did not want a dress with a full skirt. I am not a tall person, so I wanted something more sleek and stream-lined in fit, but still feminine.
Favorite detail about it: The straps, as well as the champagne tone (as I have a very light complexion).
How it worked out: The dress was per-fect. I loved wearing it because it made me feel elegant and classy, while still having a youthful fit. It was also very low-key and easy to dance and move around in. I didn’t feel a sense of awareness while wearing the dress, so I was able to be more relaxed and comfortable during my reception.

Modern miracleTara Jacques
Date of her wedding: September 10, 2011
Groom’s name: Kendrick Wright
Where she got her dress: West Main Bridal
Designer: Maggie Sottero
Cost: $1,285
Alterations (and cost of alterations): About $350. All dresses are generally too long, so they had to trim the bottom and add a hem. They took in the bust and the hips. I also had a bustle added.
How many dresses she tried on: I tried on about 15 dresses in total at various bou-tiques, in Richmond, Arlington, Alexan-dria and Charlottesville. Once I tried this one on, I fell in love with it. This one is more of a cross between the mermaid and A-line style. It has a dropped waist which was flattering to my curves but the mer-maid style hugged in the right places.
Why she chose it: I am not a girl that likes a lot of frill and lace, so I was look-ing for something with a modern edge that stayed true to my personality. I had my heart set on a one-shoulder dress. This dress was very me—non-tradition-al, unique, not overpowering but defi-nitely a conversation piece. The dress that
I was looking for was to also go along with my wedding bouquet. Long before picking the dress I had decided that I was going to have very few flowers and
preferred to have more feathers in my bouquet instead. When seeing this dress, I immediately began to see the full pic-ture coming together.
Favorite detail about it: My favorite detail about the dress is that it was some-what simple in that it was not overpow-ered with crystals and/or lace, but that the construction of the dress itself was the glamour and beauty part of it.
How it worked out: I loved the dress and the way I felt in it. I especially loved the smile in my husband’s eyes as I walked towards him. At the reception, I still felt very comfortable. It didn’t get in the way or slow us down at all. Although I changed my shoes [after the ceremony], the dress was still perfect. I am still in love with the dress even when I look back at pic-tures. I think I made a great choice!

Blushing brideCatherine GrierDate of her wedding: October 1, 2011
Groom’s name: Mike Rey
Where she got her dress: BHLDN.com
Designer: Fleur Wood
Cost: $1,000
Alterations: I had the straps taken up and some of the tulle at the bottom taken off. Al-together with my veil, which I bought from my seamstress, Charla Bjostad, it was $150.
How many dresses she tried on: Maybe eight? I bought a different dress the day af-ter we got engaged at a J.Crew warehouse sale in Richmond after trying on a handful of dresses there. It wasn’t until a couple months later when BHLDN released this Fleur Wood dress, “Blushing Crinoline Sheath,” that I had a change of heart.
Why she chose it: The dress suits me so well; I feel like the truest, most romantic parts of my personal aesthetic are represented.
Favorite detail about it: I especially love the ivory and blush colors together and the layers of materials.
How it worked out: Its colors were warm and paired well with the season; the style complemented our down home-feeling ven-ue; and the fabrics were comfortable, flowy and secure, perfect for dancing and going bra-less.

REHEARSAL DINNERS & SUNDAY BRUNCHES
Six Blue Mountain Brewery Beers On Tap & Customized Menus Just For Your Event. Also Great for Small Weddings!
Two becomes oneElizabeth StehlDate of her wedding: October 22, 2011
Groom’s name: Matt Kleberg
Where she got her dress: Through Once Wed.com and 100layercake.com. It was a sample sold by a bridal boutique. It had never been owned, but was a part of a really spectacular collection.
Designer: Monique Lhuillier
Cost: The skirt was $2,300 and the jack-et was $800
Alterations: $300; I had the top taken in because it was only available two sizes too big. We made it as form fitted as pos-sible with all of that lace, and opened up the neckline a little. We also took out a layer of lace mesh that was in the jacket so that the lace pattern was more visible. We then had a bandeau top made for under the lace jacket in a silk similar to the under layer of silk in the skirt. I also wanted to shorten the skirt so that I could wear flats!
How many dresses she tried on: Four. I had a pretty unhelpful experience at a bridal boutique. I felt pressured to find something I loved on the racks, but nev-er saw anything close to what I wanted. That’s why I started searching online.
Why she chose it: I loved that I could “compose” the perfect dress by choosing two separates to put together. Once I
found the skirt online while I was brows-ing, I knew that was the feel that I want-ed—very traditional but ultra feminine as well. I felt like the lines of the skirt em-phasized the curviness of a woman in a way that was different than most gowns I tried on. I didn’t want to feel like I had to fit the dress—I wanted the dress to fit me. Then I started to imagine what style top I would be comfortable in and would enhance the skirt. Overall, it was exactly what I felt like wearing that day. I didn’t feel like the dress was something that was radically different from my personal style, and that made me so comfortable to move, and dance and feel great all night.
Favorite detail about it: The waistband and seams in the skirt. And all that crazy beautiful lace! It was also pretty great to just wear a bandeau underneath and let the pattern of the lace stand out so well.
How it worked out: I felt beautiful and feminine and so comfortable in my “out-fit” that day. It was fun not wearing a dress, but a skirt and top. The whole thing felt simple but elegant to me and that’s kind of just what I was going for. I didn’t feel like being over-the-top but I liked the idea of creating a vision for the outfit and try-ing to follow it through just as I imagined it. The fact that my mom’s veil worked per-fectly with the lace was pretty special too.

Dress the Part
First comes the dressKimberly Pendleton SchislerDate of her wedding: August 13, 2011
Groom’s name: Phil Edwin Bolles
Where she got her dress: I bought it secondhand from my favorite wedding blogger—Sarah Darcy at Classic Bride (classicbride.blogspot.com/). She was sell-ing her wedding dress, which her mom had made for her in part, and I was to-tally in love! The only problem? I wasn’t engaged yet! I bought the dress and hid it in my dad’s closet until Phil proposed a year later. After we were officially en-gaged, I told him about it!
Designer: The dress itself is “Galina,” from David’s Bridal, I think. The bolero was handmade by Sarah’s mom.
How many dresses she tried on: 1!
Why she chose it: I had a laundry list of dream details for my wedding dress—I’m not totally sure where they came from. I’d wanted a tea-length dress, and always imagined a garden party afternoon sort of wedding. I loved lace, and a full skirt sort of thing. But the biggest detail I was looking for was sort of unusual—I want-ed a piece of the dress that I could wear again after the wedding. The lace bolero that goes with the dress was perfect. I’m hoping to wear it on our anniversary, with a slightly simpler dress underneath.
Favorite detail about it: The 3/4-sleeved, scalloped, handmade, lace bolero that snapped on to my dress.
How it worked out: It was wonderful! I felt like a princess, but like I could still dance around. I kept the bolero on for the ceremony and then wore just the dress for most of the reception. I had an amaz-ing time!

An 11-year courtship lead Kristen and Loren to a proposal on a mountaintop in Vail, Colorado. So, it seemed only natural that the couple would want to incorporate the outdoors into their nuptials. They chose Panorama Farms, with expansive grounds and gorgeous views of the rolling hills that lead to the Blue Ridge Mountains and, said the bride, “everything just sort of fell into place.”
Using the color scheme from invitations the groom designed, they incorporated a bunch of DIY elements: They used a blender marker to transfer printed type to envelopes for calligraphic results; a custom rubber stamp personalized return addresses and well-wishes cards at the reception; table assignments (which they used the blender marker for as well) were attached to string with mini laundry clips; and guests received personalized tote bags with the couple’s monogram. “We did a lot of DIY projects so that our special day was really something that we felt we were ultimately responsible for,” said the bride. “We are so in love with our wedding.”

When Lara started thinking about what direction to take her wedding, she first thought of what she enjoys. “One of the things I love most is nature—its beauty, simplicity, and adventure,” she said. “I wanted my wedding to reflect that.”
To achieve the look she wanted, she chose an out-door setting, and focused on natural elements: bark, twigs, and flowery accents (like vases with daisies tied to rows of seating) throughout the event. At the ceremony, Lara and Daniel stood under an arbor the bride’s father made from trees in her backyard. That handmade feel was important to Lara. “It ended up making everything so much more special,” she said. “I was able to pour a lot of myself and my style into it.”

“Rustic, elegant, country wedding.” That’s how the bride and groom describe the theme of their autumn nuptials in Scottsville. “We knew we wanted it to be outdoors,” said Liza, “and had envisioned a wedding [with] a comfortable, laid-back feeling.”
For the couple, that meant customization. Liza and Zach wrote nearly the entire ceremony —from the vows and ring exchange to a dedication to their parents. They had one of the bride’s best friends sing the Indigo Girls’ “Power of Two” for their first dance and, to bring a bit of the Big Apple (where they currently live) into the ceremony, they incorporated the fruit throughout décor, beverage options and treats. Said the bride, it was those few elements —the ones they put “extra thought into”—that made the day feel special and unique.

After attending a handful of weddings so stuffy the guests felt wary to touch anything, Laura and Josh decided they wanted their special day to be the exact opposite. They chose an intimate backyard ceremony and a reception complete with face painting for the kids, fireworks and a family-friendly atmosphere. “It turned out to be a fancy barbeque,” said the bride.
The most important detail? Incorpo-rating Laura’s 8-year-old daughter, Kayla, into the ceremony. The couple even exchanged vows and a diamond ring with her. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” she said. “Or yard, I should say.”

All together nowEdward: The big plan was that we would basically ambush him with about 40 to 50 of our theater and musical friends and do a medley that would then end with the proposal. And all of the songs would be from shows that he’s done or shows that we love or that mean something.
Gary: I thought we were going to Jane [Scatena]’s to have lunch and talk about our glee club. So, we get there and everyone’s there with music books. We start talking about shows, and then she brought up Into the Woods,
and did her little intro to that, which I thought was kind of strange.
Edward: And then in came our friends with the beginning of “Once Upon a Time.” Everyone proceeded to keep
coming in, which, even looking at the video now, I’m kind of like, Wow, that was a lot of people.
Gary: I think near the end I figured out this might be a proposal, especially when “Being Alive” was happening, which is the last song. And then Edward came over and proposed, and it was amazing and beautiful and I was still kind of completely in shock at that point.
Edward: Thank God he said yes. It would have been really awkward if he hadn’t.
Gary: There was only one answer.

Sneaky sneaky! The singers hid their sheet music inside books of fairy tales, like this one.
