TOUGHENED SAFETY GLASSToughened glass is considered "safety glass" inasmuch as when it breaks, it is fragmented into many small pieces which are not hazardous to the safety of individuals.

This type of toughened glass is obtained by subjecting the glass to a heat treatment at about 700 degrees and then carrying out instant cooling, seeking to create a surface compression able to increase the resistance of the glass to mechanical vibrations or stress and thermal shock.

To ensure quality, UNION GLASS toughened glass is UNI certified and is EC marked and makes reference to EN 12150 and EN 14179 regulations.

LAMINATED GLASSLaminated glass is obtained by assembling a number of glass layers through the application of plastic inter-layers (PVB, SG and EVA). Laminated glass offers the best safety guarantee, in terms of protection of individuals, from possible injury resulting from accidental glass breakage, as well as offering protection against external actions by intruders.

According to its characteristics and applications, laminated glass is governed by the following standards:

• UNI EN 12600: Impact test method and classification for flat glass• UNI EN 356: Testing and classification for resistance against manual attack• UNI EN 1063: Classification and testing for bulletproof resistance

PRODUCTION RANGEEach laminated sheet can be composed of different types of glass such as tempered, hardened, enamelled or screen-printed, and, in relation to the quantity and types of inter-layers used, can take on different safety features. The main classes can be divided into:

• Simple safety Accident Resistant and soft body impact resistance• Burglar glass Vandal Resistant - High performance on the resistance• Bulletproof High performance resistance to firearm bullets• Laminated with SG (Sentryglas) High mechanical and structural resistance

FIELD OF APPLICATION• Roofing • Railings • One-off structure façades • Window displays • Insulating glass • Pavements • Shading

SG LAMINATED GLASS ANTI-HURRICANE(SentryGlas)

The laminated glass inter-layers made by SG (SentryGlas), also commonly called hurricane resistant, have extremely high mechanical strength gained from this particular type of plastic that (after processing) acquires high rigidity and hardness providing extra "mechanical" support.

An additional particular feature of this laminated glass is the shape retention even in the event of breakage of the glass layers; unlike PVB, no glass laminate with SG collapses or shears, and it is specifically this behaviour that ensures total safety against falling into nothingness.

Glass laminated with SG offers the followingbenefits in comparison to PVB glass:• Greater mechanical resistance to bending• High structural strength• 30% thickness reduction

DECORATIVE AND DESIGN GLASSWe create decorative glass of all types, reproducing on the plate infinite graphic solutions, even with multiple colours. SCREEN PRINTED GLASSBy means of screen printing frames that are specially created and designed, the screen printing line allows the reproduction of a drawing or writing in one or more shades of colour, on the glass surface; the special paint used, available in a variety of hues, ensures total durability due to its chemical composition, which, during the baking phase, melts and becomes one with the glass.

ENAMELLED GLASSThe roller enamelling process allows the colouring of the glass on 100% of the surface and gives the paint applied a high degree of coverage.

In both cases, the glass must be heat treated in order to obtain the baking and the durability of the colour. UNION GLASS, through experience gained over time and the quality of colours and enamels used, can achieve any kind of decorated glass according to the Customer's requirements and end uses.

PROCESSINGSophisticated and cutting edge machinery combined with highly skilled labour allows UNION GLASS to complete all flat glass processing stages in company. These consist of:

CUTCutting is the preliminary operation to subsequent processing phases. Glass (6000x3210 mm), supplied by suppliers and packaged according to the type of material, is stored in the automatic stock warehouse. Following a thorough inspection of the raw material, the cut is optimised using special software in order to minimise waste. Thus individual pieces are cut to the desired size.

GRINDINGGrinding is the process of edge transformation following the cutting of the glass. It can be performed with different profiles or sections and with different degrees of finish tailored to specific Customer requirements (raw, glossy, flat and round). With the latest equipment, it is possible to perform grinding on any size of sheet.

18

Page 21: UNION GLASS - Brochure Glass Division

SHAPING PROCESSThrough the use of technologically advanced numerical control machining centres, UNION GLASS can grind shaped glass of various sizes, including large sheets.

DRILLING PROCESSDrilling is performed with special Numerical Control drills and tools of any diameter and profile (countersinking of any type).

SCREEN PRINTINGScreen printing on the glass allows a brand, writing, drawing, or other graphic element to be produced on the glass. Image transfer occurs by passing the enamel through a mesh frame, with the aid of a spatula (squeegee), in correspondence to the pattern to be reproduced. Once baked in a tempering oven, the colour is glazed, acquiring stability and durability over time.

ENAMELLINGEnamelling is obtained through the use of ceramic pigments in diluted powder, placed on the glass and fixed by baking in the tempering oven. It can be achieved in a wide variety of colours and finishes.

20

Page 23: UNION GLASS - Brochure Glass Division

TOUGHENED AND HST/HEAT-STRENGTHENED Toughening is a heat treatment that improves the surface tension of glass, increasing its resistance to external stresses. This phase uses the tempering swinging oven. The HST (Heat Soak Test), is carried out on Customer request, the test is performed after toughening and allows spontaneous breakage of toughened glass to be drastically reduced. The test is regulated by specific European legislation and consists of keeping the toughened glass at a temperature of 290 +/- 10 °C for 2 hours, if for the duration of the test, the glass remains intact, it can be considered almost immune to the risk of spontaneous rupture. Heat-Strengthened Glass: with the same system it is also possible to produce, for each thickness of glass required, the strengthened version.

LAMINATIONGlass lamination is obtained by assembling a number of glass layers through the application of plastic inter-layers (PVB, SG and EVA). Laminated glass offers the best glass product which ensures safety, in terms of protection for individuals from possible injury resulting from accidental glass breakage, as well as offering protection against external actions by intruders.

Page 26: UNION GLASS - Brochure Glass Division

LA TORRE VETRO manufactures insulating High-Tech glass suitable for any type of building and is able to meet the main environmental requirements.

The insulating glass, also called double glazing, is made up of two or more glass layers joined together, at the perimeter, by a metal profiled spacer frame (aluminium, steel) or polymeric material and separated by a layer of air or gas. Inside the perimeter frame, salts are inserted which prevent the formation of condensation inside the glass.

To increase thermal insulation of the glazing, Argon or Krypton gas is inserted in the air chambers and oxide layers are deposited on the inner surfaces of the glass.

LOW-EMISSION INSULATING GLASSINCREASES BUILDING THERMAL INSULATION WITHOUT SACRIFICING SUNLIGHT.

Low emission insulating glass is obtained using particular types of treated glass, where a layer of silver is present thus reinforcing thermal insulation properties. The insertion of Argon or Krypton gas in the inter-space allows thermal insulation of the window itself to be further increased.

Double glazing quality is determined by the value of the thermal transmittance, which quantifies the insulation provided by the glass and is measured in W/m2K (Watts per square metre per degree Kelvin).

A low thermal transmittance value indicates good insulation and thus the fixture's ability to retain winter heat within the room.

BENEFITS• Reduction in heat loss which is typical of traditional glass and significant heating energy cost savings• Excellent thermal insulation and more homogeneous distribution of heat throughout the rooms• Thermal insulating performance approximately six times higher than that of a single glass and three times higher than that of traditional insulating glass

SOLAR PROTECTION INSULATING GLASSTHERMAL INSULATION, SUNLIGHT TRANSMISSION AND SOLAR PROTECTION FOR ALL SEASONS.

Solar protection insulating glass is low emission insulating glass which performs the role of filtering sunlight by reducing external radiation and heat transfer indoors.

This type of glass is obtained by applying an additional selective metallic coating on the glass (magnetron) that allows the heat transmitted by solar irradiation to be filtered while ensuring excellent natural sunlight in the rooms.

Solar protection insulating glass, in addition to thermal insulation during the cold season, provides protection from external heat during summer months allowing high amounts of natural light to enter, resulting in a feeling of well-being throughout the year.

BENEFITS• Dual function of thermal insulation and filtering of sunlight• Significant energy saving• Greater control of light transmission

FIELD OF APPLICATION• Glass windows or multi-storey curtain walls• External doors, windows and shutters in areas with full sun

28

Page 31: UNION GLASS - Brochure Glass Division

SOUNDPROOFING INSULATING GLASSEFFECTIVE SOUNDPROOFING.

Soundproofing insulating glass is designed to improve sound insulation performance combining it with the comfort of thermal insulation and injury resistance safety. Obtained by assembling two or more double glazing layers of laminated glass, joined together by an inter-layer of PVB film capable of blocking and absorbing sound waves.

BENEFITS• Effective sound insulation from noise of typical high intensity urban centres (busy roads, railway lines)• Noise reduction inside buildings

FIELD OF APPLICATION• Stairwells, verandas, glass façades of buildings located in high noise areas (city centres, shopping areas, ring roads, close to stations or airports)• Glass and windows coverage for resistance to falling objects and for protection from external noise, such as pouring rain• Internal partitions

VENETIAN BLIND INSULATING GLASSGlass windows with Venetian blinds are obtained by fitting a Venetian blind in the double glazing cavity, keeping the blind's movement in a sealed environment, protected from dust.

The lifting and the orientation of the Venetian blind occurs through a manual or motorised mechanism.

BENEFITS• Combine traditional furnishing elegance with the typical transparency of the glass• The blinds always appear clean, saving the routine drudgery of cleaning and maintenance required for curtains exposed

30

Page 33: UNION GLASS - Brochure Glass Division

INSULATING GLASS WITH “WARM EDGE” SPACERThe term Warm Edge means thermal interaction between glass-frames and profiles on the edge of insulating glass.

The use of the Warm Edge systems allows higher temperatures to be maintained on the inner edge of the glass, thus contributing to a significant energy saving and an improvement in living comfort.

Warm Edge spacers are made of stainless steel coupled with polypropylene, a high quality plastic material, which improves the mechanical properties and the thermal insulation of the profile, due to its low conductivity. The perfect union of the two materials significantly reduces heat exchange and at the same time guarantees excellent impermeability performance against gases and moisture.

31

BENEFITS• Low heat conductivity, therefore excellent insulating capacity• Significant improvement in Uw values• Increase in the surface temperature at the internal perimeter of the glass (Warm Edge)• Significant reduction in condensation• Significant air circulation reduction near the window• Good butyl and the secondary sealant adhesion thanks to the inorganic

surface of the metallic film• Excellent aesthetic finish

DOUBLE GLAZINGPRODUCTION LINESLA TORRE VETRO has state of the art double glazing production, controlled by a computerised system. Each line can produce double and triple laminated glass, there are no limitations to size. DOUBLE GLAZING PRODUCTION PHASES:The double glazing production cycle begins with the preparation of spacer frames. These frames are mostly made of metal profiles or others (upon Customer request) and are filled with dehydrating salts that absorb any remaining moisture.

THE SUBSEQUENT PRODUCTIONPHASES INCLUDE:• Positioning the frame on the first glass sheet, which is glued as a result of the butyl that was previously spread on the inter-layer, creating a barrier against moisture

• Joining of two or more layers of glass which are glued to the frame and pressed to form a well balanced unit

• A second sealing, to further decrease the possibility that air enters the double glazing, with the consequent formation of condensate

• Insertion with the use of a special machine of inert (Argon, Krypton) gas within the insulating panel, so as to improve the thermal-noise insulation

French windows, Venetian or other various types of blinds can be inserted into the insulating glass.
