If you are planning to make many squares youmight want to glue the template to some cardboard, for instance the back of a note pad, or a cereal box. It's fun to think of new ways to reuse!!

1.Cut out the SQUARE template for the ornament you want to make.

2.Place the template on top of the paper and trace around it.

3.Cut the square out of the paper.

4.Follow the folding directions to fold the STAR

5.You may glue it if you like-although traditional ORIGAMI is not usually glued

    6. Add a string and/or hook if you want to hang it as an ornament!

    In correspondence with

Patricia Crawford, I learnedthat this model came to her one night in a dream, complete and intact. She wokeup the next morning andfolded it. It is the mostspectacular example of inspired creation of which I

    know.

This model was always a wonder to me. I've loved mystical

creatures such as unicorns and dragons my entire life, andas a novice orgamist I thought that to fold this model wouldbe the ultimate accomplishment. I tried time after time butmy attempts failed miserably.

There are several folding sequences which are tricky. Themodel is built upon a stretched bird base with someadditional internal structures, and I could never figure outhow to get from the unstretched base to the stretchedversion, because noone had ever taught me theprocedure. It seems I might have once completed the

procedure by accident, and then couldn't get past thesubsequent reversing steps. It is also easier to orient the

internal structures incorrectly than it is to get them right. Tomake the model easier to understand, and eliminate thesepitfalls, I've redesigned the folding sequence slightly, clarifying the steps that I found confusing.

The model should be folded from origami foil or foil backedpaper. A 10" sheet of paper leads to a modelapproximately 4" long. It also makes a wonderful miniature.Try folding it from a 3" piece of Japanese foil.

    1. Fold and unfold the paper in half

along one diagonal, then fold andleave folded along the other diagonal.

    2. Fold the corners inward.

    3. Enlarged view. rotate the model90 degrees counter-clockwise.

    4. Fold and unfold in both directions.Turn the model over.

    5. Fold and unfold. turn the modelover. 6. Carefully fold a preliminry base onthe existing creases.

    13. Fold the model in half. 14. Fold the flaps to the left.

    15. Inside reverse fold the point. 16. The purpose of the next threesteps is to execute a wrap on points A & B. Unfold the model to step 13.

    17. Open the model partially. 18. Reverse the direction of points Aand B, then fold the model back up,following the existing creases, to a

    position similar to step 16.

    Origami Santa

This month's (11/93) contribution is from Jim Marshall ([email protected]). His

    comments:

"I have forgotten where the artwork and folding method for this model originated. All I

know is that I had to recreate the artwork and folding instructions from some crude,

yellowed drawings I hastily scrawled. I gave this piece to friends and colleagues last

year, in lieu of a Christmas card. (It makes a terrific tree ornament.) Unfortunately,

instead of my co-workers doing the folding as intended, somehow I ended up folding

for them. I figured that would be half the fun for them!

Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's copyright! If so, I apologize."

"I noticed errors in the instructions to the Santa fold. The letters attached to the model

points are all fouled up. Follow the diagrams to fold (not the letters) and you should be

    OK.

Also, the drawing should be cut out on the inner square, not the outer."
