Uniarte is the first of its kind, it is a new and ambitious organization by, for and about creative people. It is meant for local and international artists that have a deep relation with the beautiful islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St Maarten, St Eustatius and Saba. Uniarte focuses on doing research about Dutch Caribbean artists in order to create awareness, unity between these artists and to promote their work through different mediums. Besides benefiting the artists, Uniarte will also play a positive role for the community. Through its projects and network of artists it will raise awareness about ‘Dutch Caribbean’ history & culture, social & political issues, and bring new, creative, under-represented, but relevant art forms to the community’s attention.

The Dutch Kingdom with the Netherlands Antilles as a part of it ceased to exist on 10-10-10. For the islands this change signifies hope for a better future. Whereas, for the Netherlands this means that they now have three additional municipalities and that there are two extra islands in the Kingdom that are autonomous. As of 10-10-10 The Kingdom consists of: Holland with three new municipalities, which are Bonaire, Saba en St. Eustatius (also known as the BES islands) Curaçao, Aruba, St. Maarten.

Considering the fact that these islands have very close ties with the Netherlands and in fact are still part of the Dutch Kingdom one would expect that there would be more knowledge shared about each other. There is a mutual lack of knowledge between the islands and the Netherlands. On the one hand, there is a considerable lack of knowledge on the islands about the other islands belonging to the Dutch Kingdom. On the other hand, there is also a limited awareness from the Dutch about the Dutch Caribbean islands and its people. In the Netherlands the Dutch speak a lot of “the Antillean”, but yet there is little understanding of these Caribbean islands, which were formerly known as the Dutch Antilles.

Besides filling up the lack of knowledge there is also a need for an organization that represents, connects and promotes the artists from these islands. Also, there is no (current) inventory available of existing artists and what their specializations are. Furthermore, there is very little visual material out there about these unique and special islands in the Caribbean. Likewise, qualitative literature regarding this area of interest is also lacking, especially with regard to art and artists from these islands. These reasons made it clear to the founders of Uniarte that there should be an organization, which can connect the

artists of these islands and become a driving force for art on many different levels. Because of our Dutch-Caribbean background we believe that it is essential to document our history and continue to communicate historical, cultural and social issues through different types of art and media. Moreover, we believe that a part of this knowledge deficit within the Kingdom could be bridged through the exchange of art by using various mediums.

THE MISSION OF UNIARTE CAN BE DESCRIBED IN ONE SENTENCE:

To help upcoming “Dutch Caribbean” artists get ahead in their field of e x p e r t i s e a n d p ro m o t e a r t i n communities that has been exposed to art in a limited manner.

There are three pillars, which represent the goals of Uniarte: Research, Exposure and Continuity. Because of our Dutch-Caribbean background we believe that it is essential to document our history and continue to communicate historical, cultural and social issues through different types of art and media. Moreover, we believe that a part of this knowledge deficit within the Kingdom could be bridged through the exchange of art by using various medium.

ResearchThere are several issues concerning art and artist from the Dutch Caribbean, which are unclear and unanswered. In an effort to solve the mystery of these issues Uniarte attempts to find answers to questions such as: How many artists are there? Which areas of art are most represented by Dutch Caribbean artists? How is the history of the islands and the Netherlands reflected in their work? What were their motivations to become artists? How does the public react to the Dutch Caribbean art?

ExposureUniarte also wishes to create exposure for the artist in its database. This entails creating some sort of network for these artists where they are aware of each other and can network, but also for the community of non-artists to learn about art and the endless possibilities.

ContinuityThe continuity objective is really all about being a sustainable organization. Uniarte wants to make art an active part of the Dutch Caribbean communities. Uniarte wants to accomplish that through: Education, Job Opportunities, Innovative Projects, Cooperation between artists and companies

For Who ?Pa Ken ?By Uniarte

Our main goal is to help and support emerging artist, while creating a platform where the established and emerging artists can connect, which should have a positive influence on future work that can be achieved in the Dutch Caribbean.

There are a number of established artists who work in the Dutch Caribbean and started their careers when there was no organization or extra resources to help them develop themselves as an artist. Surely, their knowledge is very valuable to the art community and their work is and has been the base of the artistic experience of the Dutch Caribbean. These established artists, who are full of experience and artistic wisdom are cherished and are also necessary to support young emerging artists. By joining Uniarte, hopefully they can become mentors and sources of inspiration to the young and emerging artists.

Young Emerging Artists vs. Established ArtistsAn established artist is someone who is at a mature stage in his or her career and who has created an extensive body of independent work. Someone who established a solid reputation as an artist amongst art critics, general public, art buyers, and art galleries can be considered an established artist. An established artist has reached an advanced level of achievement by sustaining a nationally or internationally recognized contribution to the discipline.

Whereas, an emerging artist is someone who is in the early stage of their career, someone who is in the eye of the public, audience, art critic and/or gallery, but has not yet established a solid reputation as an artist amongst art critics, art buyers, and art galleries. The term emerging artist is often used for young artists and students who have recently graduated from a prestigious art college, but can also be applied to someone who has made a career change or recently decided to prioritize their art above everything else.

Meet & Greet #2Coming Soon!

This event is an Art Exhibition, which includes different types of art such as spoken word, theater, films, sculptures, paintings, and photography by Dutch Caribbean artists. The goal of this event is to introduce the audience to various art forms displayed and performed by numerous emerging artists from the Dutch Caribbean. Also, Uniarte exploits the opportunity to expose Dutch Caribbean people in a positive light, which is especially important following the changes with regard to the status of these islands within the Kingdom. We really look forward to seeing you at our next Meet & Greet and hope that you can not only come support the artists, but also help spread the word about this new initiative.
