why i blog
@michaelsurtees | unexpected narratives and creating the right conditions | february 4th, 2010 | http://designnotes.info/?cat=102
why I blogi do it for myself There’s no huge growth goal to get a certain number of visits or comments. By doing it for myself it gives me a lot of freedom to explore the things I want to. In turn I hope others enjoy the things I collect on DesignNotes. But if no one ends up visiting, that’s ok b/c I wrote what I did because I wanted to.
i do it to remember You’re more likely to remember something if you’ve written about it. Now that I’m remembering all that stuff, I need to figure out a way to apply that knowledge. (Suggestions welcome)
i do it to keep my mind active Just like when I take photos to help me see, the same can be said about writing for my blog. If you’re actively thinking about the world around you, it makes you better informed to make decisions.
i do it to meet likeminded people I can’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t taken those first steps to post an idea. I’ve been very lucky that there have been readers of DesignNotes that have turned into friends and it’s been a great resource to bounce ideas off of.
i do it because i can The fact that it is so insanely easy to be a publisher that only eight or ten years ago would have been impossible. The overhead is extremely low… It’s important for me to explore all options for communication. I’m a designer, if you’re not willing to try to understand all the options people have to express ideas, how is it possible to give the most informed ideas possible?

Deborah Adler ClearRx Interview
@michaelsurtees | unexpected narratives and creating the right conditions | february 4th, 2010 | http://designnotes.info/?cat=102
“Information Hierarchy—(order, position, type size, contrast, leading,
alignment and choice of typefaces) is another important factor to a
functional and clear label.
These two elements coupled with the consumer’s point of view
is crucial to the success of the labels legibility. It will also make drug safety information easier for doctors to find in a short amount of time. Not only did I want the labels to be functional and
easy to understand, but it interested me that by understanding
adult schemas for taking medication, the label has the possibility
of increasing memory.

@michaelsurtees | unexpected narratives and creating the right conditions | february 4th, 2010 | http://designnotes.info/?cat=102
“I always said on my 30th birthday if I hadn’t yet taken a big risk in life and started a company or something big, I had to quit my job on that day and figure something out fast. I guess I got anxious
because on my 26th birthday I walked into Cliff’s office and retired
from advertising. I developed a business plan, found an investor, and
a year and a half later in December of last year, we opened our doors.

The Person behind Nooka: an interview with Matthew Waldman
@michaelsurtees | unexpected narratives and creating the right conditions | february 4th, 2010 | http://designnotes.info/?cat=102
“Adults don’t think about it much, but time is calculated in base 12
[or base 24] when almost everything else we calculate is base 10.
These concepts are difficult for some children and must be taught. If something must be taught, then it is not intuitive… which brought all the background processes above together and I questioned why there were only 2 ways to represent time.–matthew waldman

“Q: Do you design for yourself, have a person in mind or
something else entirely?
Something else entirely I think, however it’s like buying presents. You usually buy something for someone else that somewhere you also enjoy because it is more fun that way—it’s more genuine if you do it that way.–alissia melka–teichroew

fun”. That’s why ToyCamera only has random effect. I wanted to pick

Also I want to make my ToyCamera as Camera not application. That’s why there is no

@michaelsurtees | unexpected narratives and creating the right conditions | february 4th, 2010 | http://designnotes.info/?cat=102
“I vividly remember visiting an exhibit showcasing David Carsons
work. I was truly fascinated by his ‘freestyle graphic design’, even
though it was clear that it wasn’t for me. I always had the gridded-white-space-driven-swiss-designer in me. Now, I can clearly say, that Josef
Müller-Brockmann’s work was, and still is, one of my
biggest influences.

“you read best what you read most Zuzana Licko mentions in 1990, while more recently during the 2008
US Presidential Election a student quipped if the news is that important, it will find me. They’re
universal truths that are applicable to almost anything. It’s not a
