UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS TECHNICAL SERVICE Underwater Noise Measurement and Baseline Studies SLR employs custom designed underwater noise data acquision systems, incorporang state of the art hydrophones and signal processing soſtware, in order to measure and analyze underwater noise sources. SLR has developed an extensive measurement database of underwater noise sources for use as reference source noise levels in noise modeling applicaons. We have measured and developed a robust set of site laws for higher risk, high noise generang acvies, such as marine piling and underwater blasng. Underwater Noise Modeling An important inial step in the noise impact assessment process is to determine the level of noise emissions that may result from a parcular acvity or development. Having an understanding of these levels allows for decisions in relaon to the appropriateness of the acvity and any need for management measures. Underwater noise levels can be determined directly via measurement of similar acvies at representave sites, or predicted from reference data and modeling. Environmental Assessment SLR has undertaken extensive research into the potenal effects of underwater noise emissions on marine fauna in consultaon with our in house ecology team and associated expert academic reviewers. We are therefore able to determine the potenal zones of impact for specific species, whether it be for large marine mammals, turtles or fish, and relevant to the proposed construcon or operaonal acvies. The combinaon of detailed empirical or numerical modeling techniques and specific knowledge of species specific impacts allows SLR to develop and implement common sense, praccal strategies to manage the potenal impacts of underwater noise on marine fauna. Environmental Management Design and Implementaon Migaon of underwater acousc risk to marine fauna and marine infrastructure includes the design and implementaon of a praccal and cost effecve management plan. These may include measures such as Passive Acousc Monitoring, Visual Observaon (e.g. Marine Mammal Observers) and long-term stascal monitoring of marine fauna. HOW SLR CAN HELP

SLR combines extensive experience in acoustics with in-house ecological expertise. Coupled with key academic peer review partnerships, we can deliver a full suite of underwater acoustics services, including baseline studies, numerical modeling, detailed impact assessment, and mitigation design and implementation.

Underwater noise emissions and their

potential impact on the environment and marine fauna are increasingly becoming an issue for environmental regulators and other stakeholders.

UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS

TECHNICAL SERVICE

Underwater Noise Measurement and Baseline StudiesSLR employs custom designed underwater noise data acquisition systems, incorporating state of the art hydrophones and signal processing software, in order to measure and analyze underwater noise sources. SLR has developed an extensive measurement database of underwater noise sources for use as reference source noise levels in noise modeling applications. We have measured and developed a robust set of site laws for higher risk, high noise generating activities, such as marine piling and underwater blasting.

Underwater Noise ModelingAn important initial step in the noise impact assessment process is to determine the level of noise emissions that may result from a particular activity or development. Having an understanding of these levels allows for decisions in relation to the appropriateness of the activity and any need for management measures. Underwater noise levels can be determined directly via measurement of similar activities at representative sites, or predicted from reference data and modeling.

Environmental AssessmentSLR has undertaken extensive research into the potential effects of underwater noise emissions on marine fauna in consultation with our in house ecology team and associated expert academic reviewers. We are therefore able to determine the potential zones of impact for specific species, whether it be for large marine mammals, turtles or fish, and relevant to the proposed construction or operational activities. The combination of detailed empirical or numerical modeling techniques and specific knowledge of species specific impacts allows SLR to develop and implement common sense, practical strategies to manage the potential impacts of underwater noise on marine fauna.

Environmental Management Design and ImplementationMitigation of underwater acoustic risk to marine fauna and marine infrastructure includes the design and implementation of a practical and cost effective management plan. These may include measures such as Passive Acoustic Monitoring, Visual Observation (e.g. Marine Mammal Observers) and long-term statistical monitoring of marine fauna. SLR has also developed and presented training materials for clients in relation to Marine Mammal Observation on a project specific basis.
