Course Description:The dental hygienist plays an invaluable part of the dental team by providing optimal dental hygiene patient care and the delivery of oral health promotion and disease prevention services. In short this course is designed to enrich the dental hygienist’s observational skills and understanding of radiographic findings of dental and maxillofacial disease thus increasing their value to the dental team and the enhancement of patient care. Time will be spent on recognizing and understanding the radiographic signs of oral and maxillofacial diseases including, but not limited to benign and malignant tumors, cysts, fibro-osseous diseases, inflammation conditions and developmental and congenital anomalies of the dentition and jaws.

Educational Objectives:At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:1. Describe and recognize the normal anatomic structures of the teeth, jaws and

skull as they appear on intraoral, panoramic radiographs.2. Recognize and describe common radiographic signs of caries, periodontitis and

periapical lesions. 3. Recognize the radiographic signs of developmental and acquired abnormalities

of the maxillofacial region.4. Explain the radiographic differences between benign and malignant conditions.5. Identify the radiographic differences between benign tumors and cysts.
