ABSTRACT

Setyowati, Rosalia Indah. 2017. Undergraduate Thesis. An Analysis of Descriptive

Text in English Textbook Entitled “Pathway to English” for Senior High School

Grade X. English Language Education Program, Faculty of Cultural Studies,

Universitas Brawijaya. Supervisor: Dian Novita Dewi, S.Pd.,M.Li.

Keyword: Pathway to English textbook, Curriculum 2013, Descriptive Text

Indonesian government has set out the new curriculum, namely Curriculum

2013. Curriculum 2013 states some basic competences and core competences as the

references and guideline in designing classroom activities and teaching materials,

including textbook. Therefore, while designing the textbook, the authors should use

the basic competence and core competence to ensure that the textbook is appropriate

with the curriculum and also with the students’ need. Regarding the appropriateness

of textbook with the Curriculum 2013, the researcher wants to know the

appropriateness of descriptive text in an English textbook with syllabus of curriculum

2013.

In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. This

research used document analysis to know the appropriateness of descriptive texts in

“Pathway to English textbook for grade X students” with three core competences in

syllabus: social function, generic structure, and language features. In analyzing the

material, the researcher used validated checklist that was designed based on

Curriculum 2013.

The result showed that five descriptive texts: My Aunt Dolores, A letter of

Recommendation, Purna Bhakti Pertiwi Museum, Semarang City, and Borobudur

Temple were appropriate with curriculum 2013. Based on the analysis, every core

competence or sub dimensions in term of: social function, generic structure, and

language features was found in the text and proved by evidences in form of words

and sentences. The percentage of the third term was about 100%. Although the result

showed that the descriptive texts were matched with Curriculum 2013, the researcher

suggested the teachers to add additional texts in order to fulfill students’ need.

Further, the researcher also suggested further researcher to analyze different text

types in this textbook using different parameter such as syllabus and communicative

approach.

ABSTRAK

Setyowati, Rosalia Indah. 2017. Analisis Teks Deskriptif pada Buku Bahasa

Inggis Berjudul “Pathway to English” Untuk Siswa Kelas X. Pendidikan Bahasa

Inggris, Universitas Brawijaya. Pembimbing: Dian NovitaDewi, S.Pd.,M.Li.

dibuat berdasarkan Kurikulum 2013.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lima teks: My Aunt Dolores, A letter of

Recommendation, Purna Bhakti Pertiwi Museum, Semarang City, dan Borobudur

Temple sesuai dengan kurikulum tahun 2013. Berdasarkan analisis, setiap
