Textile and apparel studies explores the dynamic, fast-paced fashion industry and builds on multiple perspectives to assure that graduates can succeed in a culturally diverse and global industry.

Fashion Design students develop technical and creative skills required for entry level design positions in the fashion industry. Merchandising students gain knowledge of business aspects of the fashion industry and pursue careers in wholesale management, buying, and marketing. Product Development builds competence in creative aspects and business skills to meet demand for fashion professionals with broad skill sets.

Health educators specialize in assisting individuals and communities by preventing and changing negative health behaviors and health outcomes that are linked to disease, disability and poor quality of life.

Athletic trainers specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and immediate care of injuries, as well as the rehabilitation and reconditioning process of medical conditions and injuries. Working with physicians and other allied health professionals, athletic trainers function in a variety of settings including: secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, and professional sports programs. This is a competitive special admit program with limited availability; students apply to the program after successful completion of pre-professional course work.

Elementary school educators complete a comprehensive program in content and methods courses in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. By adding a major and minors in other content areas, graduates are recommended for teacher certification examinations in the State of Michigan. Certified teachers are eligible to teach kindergarten-8th grade.

Dietitians study the relationship between health, wellness, and the science behind food and nutrition. Students apply for special admission to this competitive program during the spring semester of their sophomore year after completing all pre-professional course work. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for accredited internship programs, a necessary step in fulfilling the requirements to be a Registered Dietitian.

Child and family development professionals are prepared for careers as specialists in child care, human service, and nonprofit organizations. With an academic focus on the development of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children and their families, graduates create afterschool programming, serve as family educators, child and family life educators, and manage youth organizations.

This education endorsement develops students in elementary and special education to work with children from birth through 3rd grade. Upon certification, graduates work in the pre-K and elementary school setting as preschool teachers, early interventionists, curriculum and professional development specialists, early childhood special education teachers, and elementary education teachers.

This scientifically-based curriculum includes coursework in the basic sciences, the physiology and biomechanics of exercise, fitness assessment and exercise testing, exercise prescription and training, behavior modification, and the clinical aspects of exercise. Graduates pursue careers working as strength and conditioning coaches, sports nutritionists, cardiac rehabilitation professionals, personal trainers, and instructors for corporate wellness. Others pursue advanced degrees in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medicine or chiropractic, and exercise physiology or biomechanics.

This program emphasizes knowledge of food preparation and service and management of food service operations and provides a unique concentration in sustainable food systems. Graduates pursue supervisory and management positions in commercial food facilities, long-term care facilities, hospital food service departments, corporate food service, hotels and resorts, governmental food agencies, school food service, and sales positions in food distribution and equipment manufacturing.

Family studies professionals are prepared for positions in public or private human service organizations and programs related to children, families, and individuals. This program is designed to address a wide array of social and development topics impacting everyone from youth to seniors.

This program combines art, business, and interior design courses to address the aesthetic, functional, historic, and social aspects of the interior design profession. Students apply for selective admission to upper level courses upon completion of pre-professional course work and a portfolio review.

Special education prepares teachers to be highly competent and effective educators. The demand for special education teachers is greater than ever. Graduates of the program will be prepared for the increasing challenges of inclusive classrooms and other service delivery options in K-12 settings. Students will earn the following teacher certifications: K-12 special education, K-5 elementary education, endorsement in learning disabilities, and endorsement in emotional impairments.

Recreation professionals gain the knowledge and experience of recreation and leisure leadership, program and service development, delivery, and management. Graduates pursue careers in community, campus, commercial, government, or private settings.

Physical educators promote health and wellness through movement and exercise as a teacher/coach. Students pursuing a degree in physical education complete a secondary education minor and are eligible for K-12 teacher certification in the State of Michigan.

Secondary education teachers are eligible for teacher certification at the middle, junior high, and senior high school levels. Major and minor options are available from a select list of content area choices. Special admission is required into the professional upper-level courses and is typically done after your sophomore year. Certified teachers are eligible to teach 6-12th grade.

Due to the specialized nature of art education and music education, these programs are housed in the Frostic School of Art and the School of Music, respectively.

MAJORS

Prepares qualified teachers at the middle, junior high, and senior high school levels, and at vocational/career technical centers, and in business/industry areas. Students have the option of applying 4,000 hours of previous, recent, and relevant work experience in particular content areas.

Industrial Technology Education prepares educators in the areas of automotive, welding, construction trades, drafting, and electronics.Business Education at the Secondary Level prepares educators to teach management, marketing, and accounting in secondary high schools.Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education includes health, life skills, nutrition, sewing, personal finance, and child care. Occupational Education Studies serves students with technical training from Michigan community colleges who desire to become certified teachers.

Continuing the Tradition of Success

Community Health Education prepares candidates to work in non-school health settings such as public health departments, hospitals, work site health promotion, and non-profit community agencies.School Health Education prepares teacher candidates to be certified as health educators in public schools.

Recreation Management offers guidance, experience, and courses that allow students to prepare to assume leadership and/or administrative roles in sports, community, campus, outdoor, commercial, government, or private settings.Sport Management prepares students for roles in sport organizations on the interscholastic, intercollegiate, professional and recreational levels. The electives in this program allow for student flexibility in preparing for employment in any of the different areas in the fields of recreation and sport.
