GET READY FOR A DIFFERENT UYou’ve heard all about our pioneering, broad-based curriculum, our interactive, seminar-style classes, our emphasis on global exposure and community involvement programmes. Sure, they’re all great.

But has anyone told you about the incredible flexibility to choose from over 300 double major and double degree combinations? And the opportunity to choose which professors you want to learn from? Probably not. Or SMU-X - our collaborative experiential, real-world learning approach? It’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard of and it’s going to rock your notion of undergraduate education.

The best part about SMU though is the one thing that’s going to make you feel right at home - our SMU family. Bright, motivated and fun-loving students who work as hard as they play. Distinguished and caring faculty members who make time for their students and have a genuine interest in their learning. And university staff who see to it that your time here is going to be an experience you’ll cherish for the rest of your life.

MEANINGFUL IMPACT BY GRADUATES WHO

TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION FOR A NEW GENERATION

CURRICULUM: BROAD-BASED, FLEXIBLE, RIGOROUS

With the new Core Curriculum, SMU has taken a 360 degree assessment of what a well-rounded graduate for the 21st century should look like; and in doing so, we strengthen our commitment to producing a generation of entrepreneurs, professionals, citizens, and leaders who will bring meaningful impact to those whose lives they touch. As the core muscles in a body strengthen the balance and efficacy of the limbs, so our Core Curriculum will develop the social intelligence and ethical compass of our students, and propel our graduates to apply their technical skills and disciplinary knowledge in the workforce and communities with greater mastery and subtlety, confident in the reality that some situations we can anticipate; others we cannot, but face boldly and readily nonetheless.

“I chose to study Business Management as my primary degree because of its relevance in an ever-changing world. Studying Business would allow me to gain essential and transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and strong communication. I also decided to take a secondary degree in Social Sciences because I have always been interested to learn about the relationship between man and society, between nature and nurture. To me, it is a fascinating field that constantly sparks new points of conversations and ways of understanding the world.”

SMU-X: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND DISCOVERY

The SMU-X course that I took was truly impactful to my education journey at SMU – it allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom in the real-world context through project engagements with organisations on the problems they faced, bolstered by active mentoring from faculty and industry practitioners. This eye-opening experience has given me a greater understanding of the complexities that corporations have to deal with and equipped me with the knowledge and skill sets to be better prepared for the working world.

1. Unique three-way learning with faculty, students and external partners

3. Active mentoring from industry partners and instructors

2. Project-based learning that focuses on real world problems and results

4. Interdisciplinary learning

Problems faced by organisations are increasingly more complex. To ensure organisations recruit capable new talents, there is a need for SMU to produce future-ready graduates who constantly seek new knowledge and effectively apply what they have learnt. SMU-X is an innovative learning approach where we combine academic with experiential learning — students are challenged to use their disciplinary knowledge to tackle real-world issues through inter-disciplinary approaches. Through each SMU-X course, students will be mentored by both faculty and industry partners from corporate, non-profit or government-sector organisations in this experiential learning journey to make meaningful impact in business, government and society. Moving beyond Singapore to better prepare our students to work in a global setting, SMU-XO (SMU-X Overseas) courses offer students the opportunities to embark on overseas projects directly with the foreign companies and/or SMU’s partner universities.

Supporting the SMU-X pedagogy, a 24/7 innovative co-working space known as the SMU Labs was established to foster better collaborative and active learning.

I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take up an internship in Uganda during the summer break last year. The internship was at Bidco Uganda Limited, a joint venture between agribusiness group Wilmar International and African consumer goods firm Bidco. My internship placement was in marketing and sales but the programme was structured such that I also got an insight into different aspects of the factory and how everything worked.

I just completed an internship with Deloitte Singapore. Not only was I able to put theory into practice and gain first-hand knowledge of the audit industry, I was successful in obtaining a full-time job offer. Part of the success can be attributed to the culture in SMU – the unique emphasis on projects and deliverables pushed me to consistently produce quality work.

A CITY CAMPUS LIKE NO OTHERWhich university campus in Singapore is in the CBD? With the Supreme Court a stone’s throw away? Or one of Singapore’s oldest heritage neighbourhoods, Kampong Glam, steps away? Or two MRT stations right under it? Cinemas across the street? Malls galore at its doorstep? And is studded with museums, theatres and art galleries all around it?

No prizes for guessing. SMU is Singapore’s only university campus in the heart of the CBD and civic precinct. Let us give you the low-down (or should we say, ‘high-down’).

SMU is Singapore’s only university campus in the heart of the CBD and civic precinct. We are connected by 4 MRT stations and bus routes to every part of Singapore.

PSR is a community where students can get together to help one another. Through simple tasks such as cleaning the apartment, I have been able to foster camaraderie with my fellow residents. Moreover, through interactions with my international friends, I have learnt to view the world through different perspectives.

BE THE CHANGE

There’s something about getting out of your comfort zone, helping others, sharing what you have with the less privileged that changes you for the better. For life! Community service is a key pillar in SMU’s innovative and transformational education approach.

All SMU undergraduates put in many hours of community service before they graduate. The projects can be done locally, although many choose to do them overseas. No matter how you feel at the beginning, everyone gets impacted in the end. Many go on to participate in more projects beyond the requirements. But don’t just take it from us. Hear what participants have to say about their experiences.

I enjoy teaching because it allows me to draw on insights from research and share them with students in the classroom. It has been a great experience so far because my students are intrigued by economic theories that relate to accounting and the importance of financial reporting in a capital market economy.

Accounting and Business modules complement each other really well as the concepts taught under each degree are not isolated but instead gel well together. Being able to connect the concepts from both degrees is something that is truly satisfying. This connection illustrates the synergy between both degrees and how they can be a very good combination for students looking to enter the finance and accounting industry.

LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESSThe Lee Kong Chian School of Business is one of the youngest business schools worldwide to be accredited, and the first in Singapore to achieve ‘triple crown’ accreditation - AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA accreditations.

Modelled after the best business schools in the United States, the Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) programme has the unique distinction of nurturing graduates with a broad understanding of a diverse range of subjects. This means you leave with more than just a business degree. You become a confident, articulate and well-rounded individual. Just what the corporate world ordered!

I decided to take a double major in Finance and Strategic Management because I felt that the two would complement each other, with one being more quantitative and the other more qualitative. This was worth the extra work since both majors are closely aligned with the future career paths I am interested in.

Bachelor of Business Management (BBM)

The best aspect of teaching at SMU is helping to mould something fantastic out of already very good students. SMU students, for the most part, have been through an extremely rigorous, stressful, grade-driven 12 to 13 years. Helping them expand their idea of what life could be; giving them courage to experiment, to make choices that are out of the norm, and to challenge themselves intellectually instead of taking the easy way out – that is my constant goal in my interactions with students.

BSc (COMPUTING & LAW) CURRICULUM * LAUNCHING IN 2020

The BSc (Computing & Law) degree produces IT and legal professionals who are adept at bridging technology and law. It equips students with skillsets in IT and business innovation, operating IT and business innovations within a legal framework, and employing IT in legal practice. Beyond a solid foundation in Computing and Law, students will specialise in advanced technology tracks to become future-ready for Business and Public Sectors, Consulting and Finance Sectors, as well as the Legal Sector.

The inclusion of modules, such as Financial Accounting and Finance, has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the commercial issues faced by my clients, and in turn this has made me a better lawyer for them. Also, the many opportunities to do presentations back in school have also helped me gain confidence and be a better advocate for my clients’ causes. I have never regretted my SMU education and remain indebted to the School and the Professors I have had the privilege of meeting at SMU.

ENLIGHTENED, VERSATILE AND CONFIDENT

Society needs a new generation of Social Science graduates who are able to understand increasingly complex issues beyond their discipline, integrate them holistically and solve societal problems. With SMU’s Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSc), that outstanding individual could be you.

I chose Political Science because I’m interested in international relations. The degree provides me with the skill and knowledge to understand and appreciate what goes into policymaking and even geo-political relations. Today, I am better able to connect the dots and gain clarity about the complex global issues that we are facing, in a short span of time.
