enOVER THE RHINE: Social & Ecological Sustainability

Duration: 6 weeks

Site: Over-the-Rhine Cincinnati, Ohio. Once home to German immigrants in the late 19th c., it is now considered one of the most disenfranchised neighborhoods in the United States. The current demographics of residents are; 80% African-American and the average income is less than $1,800 a month.

Objectives & Goals: Our design challenge was to redesignan existing block & building to create an ecologically & socially sustainable environment that could lead to possible social changes within OTR.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

GROUND

FIRST

SECONDThe District of Over-The-Rhine holds the most preserved architecture of late 19th & early 20th c. urban townhouses. These urban typologies allow for interesting design problems and problem solving strategies. Most of these townhouses have a width of 15’, obviously much narrower than today’s standards. Limited access to handicap accessible housing became an integral design problem in order to bring more equality to Over-The- Rhine.

The town house rehabilitation program created encourages individuals who were interested in the investment to pay for remod-eling expenses. An investor would remodel the existing building and the lease the bottom floor allowing for assistance with mortgage payments. Also with certain government funding a person could do a subsidized leasing agreement discouraging gentrification which has become an issue within the neighborhood of OTR.

OWENSBORO: Roots of Bluegrass

Duration: 6 weeks

Site: Owensboro, Kentucky The Birthplace of Bluegrass. Located a few miles from the infamous mando-lin player Bill Monroe’s birthplace, Owensboro boasts a rich musical his-tory. A small city along the Ohio river, it has the Ohio River City’s bountiful architectural tradition.

Objectives + Goals: Explore and discover bluegrass music while applying to architectural design. Adaptive reuse of the Kentucky Federal Building, an existing con-crete structure. Finally, the explora-tion daylighting and sustainability in the highly technical parameters of museum design.

R I V E R F R O N T R E S TA U R A N TThere was an emphasis to design a community driven program; making the International Bluegrass Music Museum not only for Bluegrass enthusiasts, but also for the local residents of Owensboro. Particular emphasis placed on the restaurant, gallery, and performance spaces creating a welcoming and open environment for all patrons.

CLIFTON: A STUDY OF URBAN PLACEClifton Library: A Study in Urban Place

Duration: 1 Week

Site: Clifton, Cincinnati, Ohio. An eclectic and densely populated urban neighborhood. The community consists of many different ethnicities and age demographics, because of the presence of The University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital, and the Hebrew Union College.

Objectives + Goals: The design of the Clifton Community Public Library. In order to create a urban and community based library than responds to the urban condition.

03.

Page 19: Undergraduate Portfolio

URBAN INTEGRATION

The main conceptual aspect of the design is based on urban ‘place making’. A library can be a hub for the community filled with not only with the knowledge contained in books, but also as a media and technological terminal.

LONDON: Sustainability & Urban ExplorationDuration: 5 Weeks

Site: Canary Wharf, London, United Kingdom

Objectives + Goals: Our studio’s goal was to explore the urban fabric of London, focussing modern London’s architecture, and how they have embraced energy efficient design. The program was to accommodate a commercial office for Square Circle, an up and coming design firm.

Personal Contributions We were divided into groups of two. My partner and I worked and evolved the design together, while I focused on the Sustainable design tactics through site analysis and research.

Page 26: Undergraduate Portfolio

SUSTAINABILITY: THERMAL CHIMNEYOur design focused on passive solar sus-tainability techniques. We emphasized the natural rising of warm air and how that principle can allow for natural air circu-lation in a building reducing the need for mechanical ventilation systems.

Berlin Wall: Collaborative StudioDuration: 12 Weeks

Site: Miami University Ox-ford, Ohio

Objectives + Goals: The Berlin Wall Studio consisted of fourteen junior and seniors. The studio was established to create a large scale installation to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of Berlin Wall. The installation reached a height of 12’ and 150’ in length, The studio was highly concerned with the history, symbolism, and psychological effects the wall created in a divided Germany.

Personal Contributions: My personal contribution was the initial design & historical research, pricing & purchasing materials, along with enabling and establishing group cohesion and communication.

03.BERLIN: A DESIGN OF FEAR

Page 30: Undergraduate Portfolio

Most of the 25 panels had to be designed individually to allow for the panels to rise and fall linearly. Each panel had to be carefully constructed in a 3-D modeling program, and then each angle and length was extracted to create concise cuts and joints.Lighting was also an integral part of the design. Electricians were consulted an hired to place lights behind the panels at interval spaces but to also install motion censored lights in the trees to represent the constantly monitored East Berlin side of the Wall.
