Under the High Patronage of thePresident of the Italian Republic
SECOND EDITION
“WE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE RE-EMERGE, AS PART OF EVERYBODY’S SENSITIVITIES, PAST HARMONIES AND SYNERGIES, SO AS TO BE ABLE TO MAKE OUR COUNTRIES ADVANCE - TOGETHER - BY BRIDGING THE BLATANT INEQUALITIES THAT FAVOUR TOO MANY CRISES AND THAT AFFLICT US. THIS ALSO REQUIRES A COMMON GOAL OF SHARED GROWTH AND PROSPERITY.”
SERGIO MATTARELLAPresident of the Italian Republic
ABOUT
MED - MEDITERRANEAN DIALOGUESis an annual high-level initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and ISPI (Italian Institute for International Political Studies), in Rome. The event aims to draft a “positive agenda” for the Mediterranean region by stimulating debate and new ideas, rethinking traditional approaches and addressing shared challenges at both the regional and the international level.
The second Edition took place from 1 to 3 December 2016 and was preceded by several “PRE-MED” sectorial meetings for selected audiences, which have turned Rome into a global hub for high-level dialogues on the Mediterranean. In particular, institutional actors, experts, civil servants, and representatives of the business community and the media were offered the opportunity to come together and discuss viable options to enhance intraregional cooperation, economic development, security challenges, energy and climate change, transport and infrastructures, institution-building, and civil society networks. These meetings have been organized by several partners: Union for the Mediterranean, Confindustria, BusinessMed, Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the University of Pennsylvania, MedReg, Aspen Initiative for Europe, RAI, NATO’s Political Affairs and Security Policy Division and Nato Defence College Foudation, the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Italy.
ROME MED rests on four pillars: Shared Prosperity; Shared Security; Migration; Civil Society and Culture. Each pillar puts the spotlight on key Mediterranean issues and on the role of institutional and non-institutional actors also with a view to stimulating policy suggestions for a region that is not only a land of instability, but also a sea of opportunities.
Relying on these four pillars and in order to provide a useful tool to further stimulate debate during ROME MED and beyond, ISPI and MED2016 scientific partners have also produced the Report “Leaving the Storm Behind: Ideas for a New Mediterranean”.

“MED 2016 HAS CONFIRMED THE GEOPOLITICAL PARADOX OF THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION. ON THE ONE HAND, IT APPEARS AS THE NEST OF VIRULENT CRISIS AND THE EPICENTER OF GLOBAL DISORDER. ON THE OTHER, IT IS THE HUB FOR CONNECTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN EUROPE, AFRICA AND ASIA, BOTH AT CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC LEVEL, AS WELL AS FOR THE ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR.”
