Dear Fellow Traveler,

Among the millions of travel quotes fl oating around, there’s one that always sticks out to us: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel only read one page.” The sentiment rings so true, especially to us in the travel world. Why only read one page when you could read it all?

We hope this letter inspires you to fl ip to the next page, both fi guratively and literally. We hope it gives you enough excitement to book that next journey, that next vacation and that next grand adventure.

So go ahead, turn the pages and transport yourself to Havana and get lost along the Malecón seawall. Listen to the sounds of your camera’s shutter click furiously as you discover New Zealand’s most incredible adventures. The best part of a vacation is the thrill of discovery. Cultural exploration, adrenaline pumping thrills, those unplanned moments of wonder; these are the things memories are made of. Get right to it by heading from the airplane to your personal paradise with affordable transportation to and from the airport, plus private transfer options. Now the only question is – what will you discover?

Hanging bridge in Costa Rica

A N I M A L E N C O U N T E R Come face to face with creatures that you’d never see at home. At Jamaica’s Dolphin Cove, you can swim not only with dolphins, but with manta rays and nurse sharks. At Maroma Beach in the Riviera Maya, take a leisurely ride atop a tall camel along the seaside. In Punta Cana, meet what are possibly the world’s friendliest squirrel monkeys at Monkeyland. Or dive beneath the sea in Hawaii’s Molokini crater, home to hundreds of marine species.

TA S T E T E S T Savor the flavor of a new place by sampling local products. Pay a visit to Maria’s bright pink house in Punta Cana, where you can try a taste of her handmade chocolate and roasted coffee. Taste the fruits of Mexico’s west coast with a variety of tequilas, best enjoyed “derecho,” or straight up. And since you’re staying near the sea, it’s best to enjoy as much freshly-caught seafood as possible.

S K I M T H E W AV E SSays E.E. Cummings, “it’s always our self we find in the sea.” You may just find yourself—and much more—as you sail along the almost unbelievably sharp cliffs of Hawaii’s Na Pali Coast. Steer your own personal speedboat through the Mexican Caribbean Sea just off the coast of the Riviera Maya, or literally sail into the sunset on a dinner cruise.

O N T O P O F T H E W O R L D The best way to get a little perspective is to see the world from a new angle; so take a bird’s eye view. Soar over Hawaii’s volcanic craters and dramatic cliffs, some of which can only be reached by air. Drift over the endless beach in Punta Cana as a parasail lifts you into the sky. Whizz through the canopy of Costa Rica’s rainforest on a series of zip lines.

S T E P B A C K I N T I M EThough the hands that built them are long gone, the monuments of past civilizations live on. Walk among the ruins of the ancient Mayan settlements at Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba, Aztlan and countless other sites across Mexico. Step into the caves in Dominican Republic and see early works of art perfectly preserved on the walls. Or wander through the fort in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, and imagine defending the island from both land and sea.Tulum ruins, Riviera Maya

Pike Place Market

Boats along Seattle’s harbor

View of Seattle skyline from Kerry Park

DAY 2No visit to Seattle is complete without perusing Pike Place Market. Founded in August 1907, the market, which welcomes over 10 million visitors each year, is one of the longest-running farmers markets in the United States. Later this year, the 9-acre site, which was designated as the Market Historic District in 1971, will complete its highly anticipated expansion project (the rst in 40 years) with the opening of the MarketFront. Check it out in the morning, when the dynamic plaza promises serene views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains. New tenants include a chocolatier, a seafood tapas bar and a brewery, among others.

Continue your culture sprint at the nearby Seattle Art Museum. With 25,000 works, there’s no shortage of insightful installations and exhibits that provide a deeper look at Northwest culture. For a local’s perspective, join the My Favorite Things Tour, where a rotating roster of the city’s best visual artists, dancers and critics play docent for a day, leading 30-minute museum tours of their own curation.

Next, take in some fresh air in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, a former industrial zone that has transformed into one of the city’s favorite stroll-able food and culture hubs. Veer from the restaurants and instead make use of the new 6-mile Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop trail, which is lined with strategically placed interpretive signs detailing Seattle’s maritime, industrial, Native American and natural histories.

After working up an appetite, amble over to Seattle’s newest star, Eden Hill Restaurant, in upper Queen Anne. Inside, a Pacic Northwest palette of wood and blue tones welcomes guests as if it were a 24-seat living room. e imaginative cuisine earned Chef Maximillian Petty a nod from the James Beard Foundation this year. Order the Whole Jidori Chicken with Meyer lemon, spruce tip and mustard butter for two, and conclude with the Ruby Grapefruit Curd, topped with crunchy pistachio “nutella” and whipped creme fraiche.

You don’t have to go all the way to Walla Walla to try Washington’s nest wines. Instead, top o the evening with a

Weekend GetawaySEATTLE

10 Postcards

BY JENNA SCATENA

Don’t let its reputation for gray skies fool you: Seattle is all about the great outdoors. From its dramatic Cascades-backed skyline to the estuarine waters of the Puget Sound and its pedestrian-friendly seaside paths, the city offers

plenty of reasons to brave the elements. Though you’ll want to carve out time to try the diverse array of restaurants serving some of the freshest seafood in the country, between meals, a weekend in Seattle should be spent exploring its numerous cultural hubs popping up around the city—rain or shine.

DAY 1While most of Seattle’s well-known attractions reside on land, visiting this city is also about experiencing the wonders of the water. Orient yourself at Portage Bay, a channel linking Lake Washington with Lake Union that’s lined with charming houseboats, marine science centers and yacht clubs that are as rened and rustic as their longtime sailor members. Take a kayak tour through the houseboat enclave to see oating midcentury-style homes accented with salvaged decor, colorful chipped paint and friendly locals soaking up sun on their cedar decks. Bird-watchers will love the Arboretum tour, which leads through watery trails where native eagles, herons and beavers are often spotted in the shallow waters. Or, catch a glimpse of Seattle’s nocturnal wildlife on a popular moonlit night paddle.

Less than a mile west, you’ll nd the aptly named Westward, a gleaming restaurant with artful nautical decorations and fare inspired by the briny Pacic—it even has a dock for guests who prefer to arrive via kayak or boat. Vintage yacht club culture permeates the grounds: lampshades fashioned from used sailcloth, buoy-shaped porcelain lights that bob in the sea breeze and a bar crafted from an old ship, perfect for sipping the signature Salty Sailors Martini. Outside, a re pit and beach with Adirondack chairs make for an optimal vantage point to watch the sun set over the Seattle skyline while nibbling on grilled octopus with fennel bark and parsley oil. nightcap at Purple Café and Wine Bar, Seattle’s wine temple. In a sleek industrial space, an iron staircase spirals around a two-story pillar of 5,000 wine bottles. With a 96-page wine list, including 80 wines by the glass, you can choose from pretty much any varietal grown in the state.

DAY 3Begin your last day with a jolt of caeine while exploring Seattle’s coee culture. Newest to the scene is the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room, a massive space that showcases the fascinating past, present and future of the world-famous coee brand. Just up the street is the headquarters for Victrola Coee Roasters, Seattle’s smaller-scale java chain that’s a staple for locals.

Once you’re properly caeinated, make the best use of your nal hours by either discovering Seattle’s origins at its rst neighborhood, Pioneer Square; catching a scenic ferry ride to Bainbridge Island; or getting a glimpse at the city’s underwater realm at the Seattle Aquarium.

If you’re not up for the crowded views of Seattle from its most iconic structure, the 605-foot-tall Space Needle, consider opting for a more leisurely activity with a stroll through Kerry Park. From one of its grassy knolls, you can catch a prime Instagram-able view of the out-of-this-world monument backed by the rest of the city’s gleaming buildings and, beyond them, a snowcapped Mount Rainier.

Pioneer Square

WHEN TO GO:July and August tie for

the best weather months, with the warmest days (average high of 73 degrees), the least chance of rain and the most hours of sunshine, so you can maximize your time outdoors.

MUST-TRY:Don’t leave without

trying any one of the seven species of local salmon. You’ll find them everywhere, from the grill at backyard barbecues to your chowder bowl to expensive plates at Seattle’s most high-end establishments. Didn’t get your fill? Bring home a package of smoked salmon.

TRAVELING WITH KIDS:

Just a 10-minute drive north of downtown, Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo features 1,100 animals, representing nearly 300 different species. There’s also the Zoomazium, a nature-inspired indoor play space designed for children ages 8 and under.

Create Your Own Wine at BLEND on ms Koningsdam Holland America Line’s ms Koningsdam debuted in April with an unprecedented amount of groundbreaking features, perhaps none more innovative than BLEND, a collaboration with Chateau Ste. Michelle, Washington state’s oldest and most acclaimed winery. BLEND—the only purpose-built wine-blending venue at sea—welcomes up to 10 guests at a time to craft their own blends from a selection of five single-vineyard red wines while learning about the vintages from the ship’s Cellar Master, who leads the blending session. After their individual blend is bottled, guests are able to create their own label to add a personalized touch before enjoying the wine during dinner or in the privacy of their stateroom.

Crystal Cruises Adds Vessels to River Fleet—Againe next few years will be a whirlwind for Crystal Cruises. e luxury cruise line has ordered two additional river yachts to its already-impressive newbuild roster, bringing the total to a whopping seven river-specific ships to be delivered by 2019. e two unnamed vessels join the four previously announced river yachts—Crystal Debussy, Crystal Ravel, Crystal Mahler and Crystal Bach—in addition to Crystal Mozart, which debuted in July. e cruise line’s growing river fleet shows how in-demand river cruising is, as travelers want to explore inland destinations that were previously inaccessible by ocean cruising. Read more about Crystal Cruises and other cruise lines’ scheduled newbuilds in the article, “Cruising in the Lap of Luxury,” on page 40.

Avalon Waterways Debuts Health-Focused ProgramsAvalon Waterways has launched a new onboard program called Avalon Fresh, a partnership with two of Europe’s rising culinary stars, brothers Leo and Karl Wrenkh of Vienna. e cruise line’s focus on fresh, local ingredients comes together with an exciting collection of wholesome menu items so mouthwatering, you won’t believe they’re healthy. e cruise line has also introduced its new Active Discovery on the Danube cruises, where guests are invited to hike, bike and canoe their way through history with action-packed itineraries, including the chance to explore an ice cave, take archery lessons or visit an underground salt mine.

New Addition to Tate Modern Opens in LondonIn June, London’s Tate Modern art museum unveiled its new 10-story building directly south of its current location. e twisting, pyramid-like structure by Herzog & de Meuron, the acclaimed architecture firm who designed the original Tate Modern, is a work of art in itself. e new building has 60 percent more space, allowing for a greater variety of artworks and artists from around the world, including dedicated spaces for live performances, film screenings and large-scale installations. Other notable features include a rooftop terrace offering dramatic 360-degree views of the London skyline and an all-new mobile app, which allows visitors to create their own personalized journey around the museum to delve further into the specific works in which they are interested.

Lighthouses, lobster bakes, windswept seascapes, granite cliffs, 17th-century architecture and cobblestone streets… North America’s northeast enchants at every

turn. And there’s no better way to immerse in the region’s natural, historic and cultural splendor than a cruise during the summer or fall, when Mother Nature amps up the real-time Photoshop, brush-stroking the landscapes in the most vibrant of colors. During this time of year, cruise lines such as Holland America Line offer a variety of seven- to 14-day itineraries, surveying the coastlines of New England and Atlantic Canada and into the St. Lawrence River, showcasing the region’s diversity and sheer magnificence. Here are highlights of key ports of call from my favorite New England and Canada cruise itineraries.

THE GATEWAYSIn all likelihood, your storybook cruise through New England and Canada will begin or end in the regional gateways of Boston or Montreal. Though more globalized than their port-of-call peers, don’t overlook these modern cities filled with Old World charm.

Boston, Massachusetts As the capital of New England and one of America’s oldest cities, Boston is a living museum of Americana and academia. I never grow tired of reliving history via the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail, visiting 16 historically significant sites, including the Paul Revere House and the Bunker Hill Monument. I also love the Boston Tea Party Museum, an experience-based attraction with interactive exhibits and re-enactments of the famous 1773 political protest. If history isn’t your thing, revel in academic excellence at the city’s legendary libraries, from the Renaissance-inspired Boston Public Library, which houses 23 million titles, to Houghton Library, the sole library of the revered 73-branch Harvard University library system offering public access (it’s best combined with a campus tour). If touring by day, lunch at Row 34 to indulge in the city’s best lobster roll. For cruises that end in Boston, a night at leisure provides ample time to feast on the artisanal pastas and succulent

steaks at Bricco in the historic Italian North End.

Montreal, QuebecOld meets new across Canada’s most exciting

metropolis, where denizens still prefer public markets to modern supermarkets yet embrace the future when it comes to matters of state such as nightlife and live music. An amble through Vieux-Montréal never fails to impress, with its cobblestone streets, history-steeped architecture and old port converging like a Hollywood movie set of 18th-century New France. I love to spend hours photographing and eating my way through the lively Marché Jean-Talon, North America’s largest open-air market, where the likes of purple broccoli and white carrots, legendary Montreal bagels and poutine (fries with curdled cheese and brown sauce) compete for attention. If traveling in late June or early July, don’t miss a chance to experience Montreal’s annual Jazz Fest, which welcomes the talent of over 3,000 musicians from more than two dozen countries.

MAIN PORTS OF CALLWith an average of eight hours in these beauty-rich ports of call, it’s best to book tours in advance or plan ahead how you want to spend your day to make the most of your time ashore. Be sure to get off the ship early to allow plenty of time to explore each destination.

Bar Harbor, Maine This posh resort town of yesteryear is once again making waves thanks to its repositioning as a gateway to Acadia National Park, the apex of Maine’s natural brilliance. Once off the ship, pass the typical souvenir shops and make a beeline for what is possibly the East Coast’s most stunning national park. The 27-mile Park Loop Road offers copious photo ops of the boulder-strewn coastline, verdant deciduous forest and the iconic Cadillac Mountain. Alternatively, a nature cruise promises prize-worthy images of whales, dolphins, seals, eagles and Atlantic puffins (June and July are best if doing a puffin-specific tour).

WHEN TO GO:New England and Canada cruises are generally offered May through late October. The best time is October, when autumn ushers in its most vivid colors.

PACKING ESSENTIALS:

Even in the peak of summer, temperatures can dip into the 50s at night. Bring a light jacket for summer and a heavier jacket for fall or late-spring sailings.

MUST-TRY:In Halifax, pop into any

restaurant and grab a glass of Tidal Bay, wine from Nova Scotia’s first appellation. Like what you taste? Pick up bottles to go at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market.

LET’S GO

Experience the glorious fall leaves and coastal views of Canada and New England on the 7-day Canada and NE Discovery cruise with Holland America Line. Cruising aboard the ms Rotterdam from Boston, visit Bar Harbor, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Quebec City, Quebec; Montreal, Quebec; and more. Departs October 7, 2017, from $1,699 per person (airfare additional).

Halifax & Sydney, Nova Scotia Most New England and Canada cruise itineraries make two stops in Nova Scotia: Halifax and Sydney. In Halifax, journey to the lobster-fishing village of Peggy’s Cove. A number of organized tours visit this lost-in-time destination to admire the circa-1868 Peggy’s Point Lighthouse and its picturesque surrounds. In Sydney, venture over to Cape Breton’s prettier, northwesterly half. To get the most out of your visit, opt for the Bras d’Or Lakes: Heart of the Island tour or consider renting a car and doing part of the scenic Cabot Trail on your own.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Though most cruise passengers choose to spend their day on Prince Edward Island shopping and strolling along Charlottetown’s main thoroughfare, Victoria Row, head 30 minutes north of the port to the island’s true treasure: Prince Edward Island National Park. Start by admiring the 19th-century Green Gables farmhouse, which was inspiration for the wildly popular “Anne of Green Gables” novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery, before continuing on to the 37 miles of jaw-dropping shoreline, which ranges from rugged sandstone cliffs to mesmerizing sand dunes to desolate, ethereal red-sand beaches as far the eye can see. Stop in a local restaurant for fresh

seafood—PEI mussels and oysters don’t get any fresher than this!

Quebec City, Quebec Since the founding of Quebec City in 1608, residents of “New France” have fought tirelessly to preserve the mark of Samuel de Champlain and France’s capital in the New World. Today, French influences—centuries-old stone buildings and chateaus, slanted-roof houses, patisseries, fromageries, epicures and more—proudly linger, lending to Quebec City’s reputation as the most European city outside of Europe. I recommend ditching the map and entering the old city, surrounded by a nearly 3-mile-long wall, and losing yourself in fairy-tale vistas, the quaint shops of Basse-Ville (Lower Town) and the grandeur of Haute-Ville (Upper Town). In Haute-Ville, allot plenty of time to get the perfect photo in front of Fairmont Le Château Frontenac; built in 1893, it currently holds the Guinness World Record for “the most photographed hotel in the world.”

Traveling by ship, you’ll discover the many incarnations of the region’s beauty far better than you ever could by car, train or plane in a single week. You’ll revel in a constant stream of bucolic villages and stunning seascapes while surveying the coastline. Charming ports of call notwithstanding, this is arguably the true magic of a New England and Canada cruise.

Arguably one of the most ruggedly beautiful countries in the world, New Zealand has long been a favorite destination for adventurers and “Middle-earth” seekers. Apart from its unique cultural influences, diverse

landscapes and rather small population (just shy of 4.5 million), the country, made up of the North Island and the South Island, offers the chance to explore a mix of cosmopolitan cities and off-the-beaten-path locales in just one visit. In addition to the craggy mountain peaks, dense forests, rushing waterfalls, quiet beaches and serene glacial sounds for which New Zealand is known, your daily escapades on both islands will be met with some of the nicest, and quirkiest, locals you’ve ever met, along with a thriving food, wine and beer culture.

Every day spent in New Zealand beckons a new exhilarating adventure or leisurely exploration. Plus, each location is no more than a few hours’ drive or a short plane ride from the next, so you can get to your next life-changing destination even quicker. To get you started, here are 12 must-see, must-do and must-taste experiences when visiting New Zealand.

NORTH ISLANDExplore Auckland’s Top Attractions Situated on the east coast of the North Island, Auckland is flanked by two sparkling harbors and is punctuated with volcanic cones and fertile farmland. Although its skyline is reminiscent of a big city, with gleaming skyscrapers and humming traffic, the vibe is still very laid-back thanks to its seaside location, nearby beaches and parks. The best way to see the city is to invest in a city pass, which will grant you access to the main attractions—like the Fullers ferry to Rangitoto Island, the Sky Tower (with 360-degree city views), the art gallery and the zoo. Or, climb the 200-foot-tall Auckland Harbour Bridge and revel in the Waitemata Harbour and a panorama of the city.

Go Wine Tasting on Waiheke IslandDubbed New Zealand’s “Wine Island,” the 35-square-mile Waiheke Island boasts more than 20 vineyards and wineries. Just a 35-minute ferry from the bustling city of Auckland, a trip to

Waiheke is the perfect holiday escape. To sip as many different wines as you can, arrange for a wine tour, which will take you to multiple vineyards, including favorites such as Peacock Sky, Mudbrick and Cable Bay. Because of the temperate climate and coastal location, the island grows a wide selection of grape varietals, including cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, chardonnay, malbec, merlot, petit verdot, semillon and more.

Experience the Serenity of Waihau BayFilled with beautiful beaches, scenic coves and a rich Māori culture, the crescent-shaped Waihau Bay on the North Island is the place many New Zealanders go to unplug and unwind. Home to just one general store, a sandy beachside campsite and a small collection of bed and breakfasts, this bay is practically untouched by development. Explore the incredible Māori heritage with a cultural walk, surf the waves of the Bay of Plenty, relax on the soft sand, spend an afternoon fishing on the calmer side of the bay or drive along the peaceful Pacific Coast Highway to take in the sights of the water and the surrounding mountains. Visit the Glowworms in the Waitomo CavesYou haven’t seen anything like the Waitomo Caves in person, though there’s a chance you’ve at least seen a photo of its radiant backdrop. You can raft or hike through the caves (often called the “glowworm caves”), where thousands of dazzling luminescent creatures sparkle through the dark waters. There are plenty of other ways to see them, from black-water rafting, rappelling off the craggy mountain cliff or leisurely kayaking below as they twinkle against the cave walls. The area boasts other fascinating caves, like the Ruakuri Cave and the Aranui Cave, a dry cave that is known as Waitomo’s best-kept secret.

Explore Geothermal Phenomena in RotoruaYou can’t miss the sulfur-rich aromas that permeate from Rotorua, New Zealand’s most dynamic thermal area. Home to spluttering geysers, puttering mud pots, spurting hot springs and exploding pools, the sounds, sights and smells are truly out of this world. Discovered by the ancient Māori, the historic people of New

Zealand, the area is a sacred spot for many locals. The crown jewel of the area is the Wai-o-tapu (“sacred waters”) area, which features a collection of brightly colored springs, waterfalls and mud pools such as the Central Pools of Wai-o-tapu, Lake Ngakoro Waterfall and the Artist’s Palette (aptly named for its multicolored waters).

Search for Furry-Footed Friends in HobbitonIt may sound like a place made specifically for “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, but Hobbiton is actually a real place on the North Island, just a two-hour drive from Auckland. The area’s real name is Matamata, which is home to the Hobbiton Movie Set, where much of Peter Jackson’s famous film shooting took place. You can take daily tours of the set, which include visits to the 44 hobbit holes. Along with the ornately decorated holes, the landscape is just as spectacular, with rolling hills, meticulous gardens and breathtaking pond and lake views.

Hike Past Emerald Lakes and Ancient Lava Flows on the Tongariro Alpine CrossingThere’s a reason the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was voted as New Zealand’s greatest day walk—with over 10,000 eager hikers tackling it every year. A venture through this striking landscape will take you past volcanic craters, tall mountains and staggering rock formations, moonscape basins, vast valleys and emerald-hued lakes. Starting at the Mangatepopo Valley near Whakapapa, the track climbs alongside a street and edges of old lava flows. On a clear day, the views are monumental, offering sights all the way to Mount Taranaki. The most famous are the three Emerald Lakes, which display a brilliant green color.

Play Dress-Up in Napier Nestled on the rocky shores of Hawke’s Bay along the North Island, this laid-back town comes to life during the renowned Tremains Art Deco Festival, which takes place every February. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1931, the town has kept its Art Deco vibe, with structures such as the Daily Telegraph Building reflecting the iconic zig-zag patterns of the 1930s. Despite an influx of visitors decked out in dazzling Gatsby-esque costumes, the town’s surrounding wine region and bustling food scene bring ample travelers to this seaside city throughout the rest of the year.

SOUTH ISLANDCruise Alongside Giant Whales in KaikouraBacked by the magnificent Kaikoura mountain range sits the picture-perfect town of Kaikoura. Nestled at the base of a peninsula and surrounded by sea, the town offers an array of maritime activities thanks to the abundance of marine life that call this area home. For panoramic views of the town and bay and to watch whales breaching from above, visit the water tower on Scarborough Street. To see the whales up close, take a cruise through the cobalt-blue waters, where you will be met with electrifying views of the pointed mountain range. Whales (from sperm whales to humpbacks to orcas), dolphins and birdlife will splash and squawk alongside the boat, offering you once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities.

Heli-Hike a Glacier Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is home to 19 rugged mountain peaks that reach jaw-dropping heights, sometimes rising above 10,000 feet. Although you can choose to take a relaxing helicopter ride over the peaks to see the landscape from above, the best way to experience

Get Your Adventure on in QueenstownQueenstown is the place to go to dabble in some of New Zealand’s most famous adrenaline-pumping adventures. No trip is complete without a visit to the Nevis Bungy, which sends you soaring more than 400 feet above Queenstown. Another can’t-miss bungy is the iconic Kawarau Bridge Bungy. Founded in 1988, this thrilling adventure sends you flying over the picturesque Kawarau River and alongside Crown Range Road. If you prefer to stay closer to the ground, opt for an exciting ride on the Shotover Jet, which takes you speeding over the white tides of the Shotover River along the gradient walls of Shotover Canyon.

Bask in the Scale of the Milford and Doubtful SoundsArguably one of New Zealand’s most prized natural attractions, Milford Sound on the South Island is home to the Milford Track, which

is known as the “finest walk in the world.” A 33.5-mile hike affords awe-inspiring views, from lush rainforests and gushing river gorges to snowy, glacial-carved peaks. The hike only allows a maximum of 90 people at a time to preserve the area’s natural splendor. Three times the length and 10 times the area of Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound in Fiordland National Park offers unparalleled views of waterfalls propelling off mossy green cliffs and jagged fjords sloping around glacial bays. Due to its relatively isolated location and peaceful lack of noise, it’s often called the “Sound of Silence.”

Colorful albeit decaying buildings, cars we remember from classic 1950s films, smiling locals dancing in the streets… At first glance, Cuba feels

inexplicably frozen in time. But on the heels of the historic visit from President Obama (not to mention The Rolling Stones) this past March, and new regulations for travelers from the U.S., the largest island in the Caribbean is slowly awakening from its slumber after more than five decades of being closed off to U.S. vacation travelers. With change and globalization inevitable, now is the time to plan your visit to Cuba, while the country still truly feels of another era.

HAVANA Let Cuba’s capital be the launch point for your visit. There’s plenty to explore on foot in and around Plaza Vieja, the main square in Old Havana. The city is particularly known for its celebration of artists, exuding creativity throughout its streets, mainly during the daytime. (Havana is oddly quiet after dark, though still considered very safe.) Spend a couple of hours at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, whose stained-glass ceiling alone is worth the visit. Then, wander a few blocks to the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, which is dedicated to the work of contemporary Cuban artists. Next, flag down a taxi (one of those 1950s model cars) to admire the locals who hang out along the Malecón seawall, the vibrant heart and soul of city life in Havana.

In the evening, head to the Fábrica de Arte Cubano, an unparalleled multi-use space in old shipping containers featuring constant live performances, several bars selling refreshments and light bites, and mixed-media works by

young artists. It’s here you’ll likely find yourself losing track of time.

Paladar means “to taste,” and is the label of private enterprise restaurants in Cuba. These are often some of the best places to eat, as they offer more creative fare. La Guarida, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is perhaps the best-known restaurant abroad thanks to the building in which it lies: the setting of the 1995 Oscar-nominated film, “Fresa y Chocolate.” For a more casual meal, try the tapas-inspired El Chanchullero, located near the art museums. It’s a lively scene (especially upstairs); while the food is simple, it’s made with passion and enjoyment.

SANTIAGO DE CUBAThe second-largest city on the island is Santiago de Cuba, over 500 miles southeast of Havana on an important trading port. The city’s population of nearly a half-million reflects its diverse origins, with immigrants arriving starting in the 17th century from France, Africa, Haiti and Spain. The city is known for its music and traditional dances, including son, the predecessor of salsa. The diverse music scene is especially on display during Carnival in July, with conga and the tunes of traditional pentatonic trumpets, known as the trompeta china, playing in the streets.

Other attractions in Santiago de Cuba include the Emilio Bacardi Moreau Museum, which features art and artifacts collected by the scion of the international rum company, and Baconao Park, located about 40 miles outside of the city, which spans over 300 square miles and contains a variety of wildlife refuges, an aquarium, botanical gardens and coffee plantations—not to mention the Valle de Prehistoria, which contains life-sized replicas of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.

GETTING THERE: Charter flights run

almost daily to Havana from Miami and, recently, New York. It’s best to work with your Travel Leaders agent, who can help navigate the process and ensure all of your paperwork is in line.

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS:

Your visit still needs to fall within one of 12 categories. The Cuban government requires that a passport is valid for at least six months after the date of travel, and a visa. The procurement of this visa can vary drastically, depending on whether you are flying via another country. Your Travel Leaders agent can help ensure that all of your documentation is in order.

WHEN TO GO: As with other Caribbean

destinations, Cuba remains temperate throughout the year. Rainy season runs May through October, which typically means passing showers; though, like its island neighbors, Cuba runs the risk of hurricanes in September and October.

SHOPPING: You are permitted to

bring back $400 worth of souvenirs, including $100 worth of tobacco and alcohol. Note: Havana Club rum is far more of a bargain than (quality) cigars. U.S. credit cards are not accepted, so plan to bring U.S. dollars with you, as there’s an exchange at the airport (dollars are exchanged more easily than traveler’s checks).

With the feel of another era still remaining, now is the time to plan your visit to Cuba! Exploring this fascinating island and meeting its people will surely be one of your most memorable vacation experiences. From Havana to Santiago de Cuba to Viñales Valley and more, you will bring back stories to share for a lifetime. We’ll take care of all the details in planning your visit, so you can truly immerse yourself in the land and people of Cuba.

VIÑALES VALLEYMuch of Cuba’s tobacco is grown in the remote Viñales Valley, situated on the westernmost point of the island. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, this agricultural area is surrounded by dramatic rock formations, making it ripe terrain for rock climbers and hikers. Some of the limestone formations, or mogotes, rise nearly 1,000 feet in the air. Tracks across the valley, used by the farms, make good walking or even horseback-riding paths and provide a chance to stop into a tobacco farm to learn about what types of cigars you’ll want to bring home as souvenirs. The village of Viñales is filled with vernacular architecture and charming pastel houses.

CIENFUEGOSHead toward the southern center of the island to discover Cienfuegos, known as “The Pearl of the South.” This quaint waterfront city was founded in 1819 by French settlers, whose influence is still apparent today, particularly in the stunning Neoclassical architecture, which helped earn it the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Divers and snorkelers will enjoy the coastline, which is dotted with coral formations known as Notre Dame (another nod to the French). Its southern exposure is protected by the trade winds, which also makes it an ideal spot for sailing and kayaking.

From bustling Havana to picturesque Cienfuegos to the sprawling Viñales Valley—and everywhere in between—Cuba has much to offer. This colorful Caribbean island has been waiting a long time to be rediscovered. And, lucky for you, the wait is finally over.

Top Five...BRIDGESEven in their simplest form—such as a log stretched across a creek—bridges expand boundaries, allowing the freedom to explore beyond what was thought possible. Spanning four continents, these five bridges are constant reminders of this basic concept, standing as functional works of art and remarkable feats of engineering that should be admired both from afar and within. BY KATIE MCELVEEN

1. PONT DU GARD NEAR AVIGNON, FRANCEDesigned by an unknown architect and constructed of limestone by the Romans during the rst century A.D., this three-level, 160-foot-tall aqueduct bridge presides over a rocky stretch of the Gardon River in southern France. Cars were banned from driving across the 50,000-ton Pont du Gard in 1996. Since then, the site has been transformed into a historical park with a restaurant, a museum, walking trails (including over the bridge) and a sandy riverfront beach.

2. SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE SYDNEY, AUSTRALIAOpen since 1932, the world’s tallest steel arch bridge is also the world’s largest jungle gym, thanks to the groups of thrill-seekers who make the two- to three-hour climb up and down the bridge’s inner and outer spans each day. e bridge is also open to pedestrians and cyclists. Within the South East Pylon, you’ll nd three levels of bridge history and, after a 200-step climb to the top, a terric point from which to see spectacular views of Sydney Harbour and the famous white-sailed Sydney Opera House.

3. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIAe 1.7-mile-long Golden Gate Bridge, completed in 1937, was originally planned to be painted black or gray, but the architect instead settled on International Orange, a shade that closely matched the primer that covered the beams when they arrived from the factory. At no charge, bikers and pedestrians are welcome to traverse this iconic landmark, a vantage point from which to see the stunning San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz and Sausalito. If you can’t make it onto the bridge, you can get a great view from Hyde Street Pier, near Ghirardelli Square.

4. NANPU BRIDGE SHANGHAI, CHINAConnecting Shanghai’s thriving Puxi district with the developing Pudong neighborhood, the Nanpu Bridge, completed in 1991, is best known for its nearly 5-mile-long coiled approach ramp, which spirals from the ground to meet the 150-foot-tall bridge. Although surrounding oce buildings—and a few rooms at the Sheraton Hotel—oer bird’s-eye views of the structure, you can also take an elevator to one of the viewing platforms on the bridge itself. For especially breathtaking photos, wait until nightfall, when the bridge lights up in all its awe-inspiring glory.

5. HENDERSON WAVES SINGAPORECurving 118 feet above the treetops, the aptly named Henderson Waves bridge is the center point of Singapore’s 5-mile-long Southern Ridges trail system and oers unmatched views of the city’s harbor and skyline. Unveiled in 2008, the architectural marvel is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. Adventurous types can take in the undulating arcs and alcoves as part of a day hike to Mount Faber. Romantics should visit at night, when LED lights illuminate the sinuous span as it unfurls across Henderson Road.

Culinary QuestBARCELONA

No doubt a burgeoning international city, Barcelona has quickly made its way to the forefront of the global culinary scene thanks to its mélange of flavors and experiences on offer, from centuries-old recipes and classic flavors to

forward-thinking expressions and international kitchens—and the fact that everything is of the highest quality. Here, our guide to it all, whether you’re craving traditional tapas or molecular gastronomy, or anything in between.

CLASSIC SPANISH CUISINEink Spanish cuisine, and ultimately you think of two things: paella and tapas. For the former, head to charming Can Solé, a Barceloneta favorite for over 100 years. e paellas here are wonderfully moist with tasty fish stock and then topped with huge pieces of lobster, prawns, mussels and clams. For the latter, check out Cervecería Catalana, located in the Eixample district, for affordable portions of razor clams (tossed in olive oil and parsley), crispy fried anchovies and thinly sliced Ibérico ham. Another choice for classic cuisine is Quimet y Quimet, a tiny bar in El Poble-sec that serves some of the best montaditos (tapas atop a slice of bread) in town, from the codfish with olive pate to the crowd-pleasing salmon with yogurt and truffled honey. More seafood awaits inside Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona at BistrEau, a stylish, light-bathed restaurant where Chef Ángel Léon creates elegant plates of squid ink croquettes and fried shrimp fritters, a popular snack from the south of Spain.

MODERN FOOD PLAYBarcelona’s culinary reputation was shaped partly by a slew of inventive chefs who set out to redefine local cuisine, perhaps none more well-known than brothers Ferran and Albert Adrià of El Bulli fame. eir restaurant, Tickets, is surprisingly affordable, serving up high-impact tapas such as the classic air baguette, a hollowed out piece of bread wrapped with cured meat, and the slightly spicy panko-covered crunchy octopus. In 2015, three former El Bulli chefs (Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casañas, who worked with the Adriàs for years) opened Disfrutar, a Michelin-starred (but casually rendered) restaurant without the heavy price tags. Here, there’s lightness and whimsy incorporated into every dish, such as the pesto ravioli, a deconstructed presentation where a translucent pouch holds all the ingredients for pesto served alongside a Parmesan broth. ere’s also a pibil-style Ibérico ham, which comes garnished with spherified corn. At Chef Jordi Artal’s Cinc Sentits, there is no

a la carte menu, but his seasonally inspired meals are so perfect, you won’t object. Go ahead and splurge on the six-course feast, a series of mouthwatering treats (think: patatas bravas transformed into delicate chips, coca bread dusted with dehydrated tomatoes and topped with olive oil pearls, and rosemary-smoked anchovies).

INTERNATIONAL KITCHENSIt might be difficult to deviate from an itinerary of Spanish and Catalan cooking, but Barcelona’s restaurant scene also includes flavors hailing from beyond its borders. In Pakta, another Adrià gem, chefs play around with Nikkei, a Japanese-Peruvian fusion concept that pairs potato causas with fresh nigiri (instead of sushi rice) and spikes tempura dishes with rocoto, a spicy pepper sauce from Peru. In the Gothic Quarter, Michelin-starred Chef Giuseppe Iannotti opened an Italian restaurant called Krèsios inside the Mercer Hotel. ere, surrounded by old Roman walls, he prepares dishes such as elevated spaghetti alle vongole, crispy cod skin spiced with bitter paprika, and cold mushroom soup, given a crunchy twist with candied potatoes.

EATING AT LA BOQUERIA:One of Barcelona’s most iconic foodie

experiences is a visit to the famous Boqueria market. Once you finish perusing the cheese, fish and butcher stalls, wait out a table at Bar Pinotxo, where many locals dine. Or, pop in for a glass of cava, fresh oysters and succulent Alaskan king crabs at the newly opened Joël’s Oyster Bar.

TAKE HOME: Historically a Christmastime treat, turrón

(a chewy type of nougat) can now be purchased no matter the season. The traditional kind is packed with almonds and honey, but popular purveyor Torrons Vicens, which has locations all over Barcelona, adds truffles, chocolate, coconut and more.

WHEN TO VISIT: Because of its mild Mediterranean

weather, Barcelona is a year-round destination. Summer is when the Catalan capital is at its busiest, with many of the restaurants that line the beach bustling with visitors.

T here’s never been a better time to indulge your yearning to take a luxury cruise: According to the Cruise Lines Industry Association’s 2016 State of the Industry Outlook, one of the year’s top trends in cruising is a greater emphasis on

luxury offerings. Lest you think cruises present little more than party-like atmospheres, dining venues hardly worthy of being called culinary and staterooms so small you can barely move, think again. From opulent living quarters to gourmet dining options and first-class guest services, today’s cruising opportunities will break every stereotype you have, with onboard experiences and amenities that rival any five-star resort. Sophisticated, luxury-driven travelers want it all—and cruise lines are delivering.

Here’s a look at what five luxury lines are doing to meet today’s travelers’ desires.

CRYSTAL CRUISESCrystal Cruises isn’t only perfecting what’s new, the award-winning cruise line is also traveling back in time by initiating a historic renovation of the SS United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in the U.S.

Developed during the Cold War but retired in 1969, the SS United States was once able to travel almost halfway around the world without refueling. When the makeover is complete by the year’s end, the SS United States will emerge as a new luxury ship with 400 lavish suites in total, that will offer transatlantic sailings from New York City, cruises from various U.S. ports and international voyages—all at a fast clip. New technology will ensure that the ship can maintain its status as the world’s fastest cruise vessel.

Fortunately, you don’t have to wait to experience Crystal Cruises’ latest innovations. The company recently introduced Crystal Yacht Cruises, allowing you to explore parts of the world you can’t access from larger ships and featuring amenities like helicopters,

submarines and zodiacs. The intimate Crystal Esprit, a 62-passenger ship dubbed as a “superyacht,” started sailing in spring as an entirely new class of luxury small-ship cruising. In August 2018, Crystal Cruises will debut the innovative 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor, a new polar class megayacht designed to travel to places like the Arctic and Antarctica.

This year also marks the launch of Crystal River Cruises. Seven luxury river yachts, which will feature large suites and public spaces, including state-of-the-art fitness centers and spas, will sail some of Europe’s most beloved rivers. The first, the 160-passenger Crystal Mozart, debuted in July.

REGENT SEVEN SEASThey say you either go big or go home. No doubt Regent Seven Seas heard that message when it announced plans for the Seven Seas Explorer, which the company claims will be the most luxurious ship ever built, accommodating 750 passengers when it sets sail in July. Compared to Crystal Cruises’ new vessels, that might sound like a lot of elbows to bump into, but consider this: The ship will boast one of the industry’s highest space ratios. In other words, you’ll barely notice other guests. What you will notice, however, is the increased number of staff members, meaning that you’ll rarely want for anything.

Truth be told, you’ll want for little else if you stay in the cruise line’s new category of luxury staterooms. The two-bedroom suites measure 3,875 square feet and offer the first in-room spa retreats, complete with personal sauna, steam room, relaxation lounge and treatment area where you can receive complimentary, unlimited treatments from the onboard Canyon Ranch SpaClub.

If that doesn’t whet your appetite, Seven Seas Explorer’s two new gourmet restaurants, joining four other dining venues, should. One features the flavors of Paris while another will satisfy your

cravings for Asian cuisine. You can receive personalized instruction through the ship’s Culinary Arts Kitchen, which is complete with 18 individual cooking stations. To complement its gastronomic offerings, Regent Seven Seas has created specially designed shore excursions called Gourmet Explorer Tours, which will provide unique land-based culinary experiences. Demand for the new ship has been so great, that Regent has already ordered a sister ship to Seven Seas Explorer, which will debut in 2020 and feature the same luxurious amenities as its predecessor.

The company is also investing $125 million in a fleet-wide renovation. Seven Seas Navigator (which, in 2017, will carry passengers on the cruise line’s first world cruise in six years) was the first to receive these upgrades. Everything from suites to lounges, restaurants and other public spaces has been redone to match the unprecedented luxury of Seven Seas Explorer. Makeovers will continue on Seven Seas Voyager in late 2016 and Seven Seas Mariner in spring 2017.

SILVERSEA CRUISESMaintaining your health and fitness can be a challenge while traveling, especially on a cruise, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Over the next year and a half, Silversea Cruises’ expedition ship, Silver Discoverer, is offering more than a dozen wellness-themed sailings, traveling to destinations such as Southeast Asia, Australia and the South Pacific. You’ll participate in water aerobics, yoga, Pilates and personalized fitness sessions led by certified instructors in addition to daily lectures on nutrition, cooking demonstrations and spa treatments, all while exploring some of the most beautiful, remote and unexplored destinations on earth.

Prefer adventure? Silversea Cruises’ 260-passenger Silver Cloud is being converted into an “ice class” ship that will journey to the Arctic and Antarctica with five dining options, a staff-to-guest ratio of 1-to-1 and intimate expedition teams. The ship will join the cruise line’s expedition fleet at the end of next year.

Next year will also mark the introduction of Silversea Cruises’ newest ship, Silver Muse. All 596 guests onboard this opulent vessel will stay in an ultra-luxurious suite (almost all of which have a private veranda) featuring state-of-the-art technology, first-rate butler service and in-room amenities such as Bulgari bath products, Pratesi Italian bed linens and plush Etro bathrobes and slippers. The ship will also offer increased outdoor spaces and eight distinct dining venues, including the first and only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea.

SEABOURNWith its reputation for creating intimate onboard experiences, Seabourn is upping its game by adding two new ships: Seabourn Encore, to debut in December, followed by its sister ship, Seabourn Ovation, in 2018.

Luxury will be on display the minute you step aboard the 600-passenger Seabourn Encore, as you’ll have personalized service at your beck and call with a staff-to-guest ratio of 1-to-1. Increased suite sizes, all of which have private verandas, will also be noticed.

Exquisite attention to detail will be evident in every corner of the ship, as the cruise line has partnered with renowned restaurant and hotel interior designer Adam D. Tihany, who has created the overall design vision for the entire vessel, including the dining venues, showrooms, casino, spa and outdoor deck areas. The ship will also include an onboard marina, complete with kayaks, windsurfers, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR CRUISE

Research onboard dining options:Before you leave home, explore the restaurants on the ship and book reservations in advance through your travel agent, when possible, or immediately when boarding, as specialty restaurants, particularly the more intimate venues, can fill up fast.

Pre-arrange private shore excursions:Rather than the cruise line’s large group shore excursions, our Travel Leaders agency has contacts in virtually every port of call and can arrange for private, customized experiences with elevated wow factors. Likewise, we can arrange for truly special touring and hotel experiences before or after your cruise with upgrades and special amenities made possible through the Travel Leaders Select Hotels program.

Take advantage of Travel Leaders’ Distinctive Voyages and Culinary Collection cruises: These two unique programs are offered exclusively for Travel Leaders’ clients. On a Distinctive Voyages cruise, you’ll have a Distinctive Voyages Host throughout your entire journey, a private cocktail reception to meet other guests, and an exclusive shore event. Meanwhile, for Culinary Collection cruises, you can take your taste buds on a gourmet experience that may include specialty dining options and culinary-related shore events.

The ship’s most popular area will no doubt be The Retreat, a modern-day sanctuary featuring 15 private cabanas, each of which includes a large HD flat-screen TV and a refrigerator stocked with your favorite beverages. You can even reserve a spa cabana to enjoy a treatment or select healthy eats from the spa menu. The space will also include a whirlpool and a cocktail bar with creations by Seabourn mixologists.

If it’s a culinary experience you’re craving, you’re in good hands. Seabourn has partnered with Chef Thomas Keller, the distinguished restaurateur behind Michelin-starred restaurants Per Se, The French Laundry and Bouchon, to create exclusive menu options for dining venues across the Seabourn fleet. Keller is also the brains behind the cruise line’s new signature fine dining restaurant, The Grill by Thomas Keller.

AZAMARA CLUB CRUISESWhile Azamara Club Cruises prides itself on its unmatched land-based excursions and its unique Destination Immersion philosophy, offering longer stays and more overnight visits than any other cruise line, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take its onboard amenities seriously. Which is why earlier this year, the cruise line embarked on a complete overhaul of its modest two-ship fleet. Both Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest have undergone complete transformations, leaving no part of either vessel untouched.

Modern decor has been enhanced prominently throughout each ship, and custom designs have been added to all staterooms and suites. Azamara has also added new Club Spa Suites, which provide easy access to the spa itself along with spa-inspired features such as rain showers and private soaking tubs that overlook the ocean. As a Club Spa Suite guest, you’ll also

receive a spa credit and healthy snacks delivered daily to your room.

Just a few steps away from these suites is The Sanctum, the reinvigorated spa space with new programs designed to increase wellness and vigor. Therapies will pull in elements from Eastern and Western treatments to offer the most holistic spa experience. Moreover, the improved floor plan of the spa has given way to the Sanctum Terrace, a private open-air space for select outdoor spa services.

The ships also have new dining and entertainment enhancements. For instance, what was once known as the Pool Grill is now The Patio and features alfresco dining with table service and a new evening menu. The scenic views remain at Windows Café, but tables for two are now an option, while Discoveries Restaurant has been overhauled to create a cozy feel. Even the ship’s main lounge, renamed The Living Room, offers a more relaxing setting with afternoon tapas and live music.

Technology also gets an upgrade on Azamara, which now offers pervasive high-speed Wi-Fi throughout both ships. Meanwhile, the new Inspiration Center boasts a huge 100-inch screen designed so guests can have the world at their fingertips. Simply touch the destination of your choice on the world map, then swipe to view images, videos, visitor information and day-by-day itineraries for voyages that will take you there. And that’s not all: In The Living Room, two interactive tabletops allow you to quickly access all of your social media outlets—so you can easily stay connected with friends and family back home, no matter where you are in the world.

Call your Travel Leaders agent to secure your spot on one of these luxury lines. Just be warned: Cruising may soon become your new favorite way to travel.

L ondon’s grand, imperial past can be glimpsed on practically every corner, perhaps nowhere more so than its posh Mayfair district, the city’s metaphorical

and physical center. It is known for its quintessential British luxury, as its mansions were once inhabited by aristocrats who moved there after the Great Fire of 1666. Arguably home to the best London has to offer, Mayfair’s attractions include a mixture of old and new, like high-end shopping on Bond Street and the Burlington Arcade, sacred music concerts at Grosvenor Chapel, intellectual lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain and, in the middle of it all, The May Fair Hotel, a symbol of wealth and unduly elegance.

Named after the neighborhood in which it stands, The May Fair was founded in 1927, welcoming American blue bloods and British nobles alike, including King George V and Queen Mary themselves, who gave it their coveted seal of approval. Nearly a century later, the five-star hotel continues to attract the upper-crust crowd, as past guests have included Muhammad Ali, Clint Eastwood and rock star Pink, who filmed two of her music videos on-site. Famous personalities continue to roam the storied halls year after year, especially during two of London’s most

prestigious events: London Fashion Week and the BFI London Film Festival, both of which call the hotel home.

In 2004, The May Fair was purchased by the prestigious Edwardian Hotels London, which embarked on a massive two-year renovation. The hotel received a new look, with glass, leather, marble and gold leaf. A variety of suites offer modern London’s sleek sophistication without the garish opulence. The standard of The May Fair comfort, the Superior Room boasts power showers in a marble Sicilian bathroom, while Studio Suites add lounge areas. Specialty suites include amenities and distinct decor inspired by their namesakes. For example, the Ebony Suite’s terrace is decorated in simple black and white, the Amber Suite features a kitchen with creamy woods and suede, and the Opium Suite’s fireplace lounge includes Chinese art and rich reds.

When not being used for exclusive film premieres and screenings, May Fair Theatre—where Italian leather seats ensure comfort and a THX sound system ensures quality—welcomes guests to enjoy movie night packages, which include popcorn, customized desserts and Champagne.

At May Fair Kitchen, which reopened

earlier this year, chefs cook in an open-kitchen format, creating an in-the-moment theatrical dining experience. Not to be overlooked is the Cigar Room, a quiet yet open space to enjoy a cigar, a martini and chocolate as well as monthly cigar and spirit masterclasses. The award-winning May Fair Bar (named “Best Hotel Bar in London” by The Guardian) has 40 signature cocktails, making it the perfect place to build up some liquid courage before heading to the Palm Beach Casino, which is open 24/7 and features live music during themed nights. After a night of trying your luck, you can think about how to spend your winnings at May Fair Spa, which opened its doors in January.

Less than a mile from Buckingham Palace, The May Fair is the spoke of the London wheel, centered for convenience and offering indulgent comfort in one of the city’s most elegant neighborhoods, where nightingales sing at Berkeley Square and where you’ll find the city’s beating heart.

TRAVEL LEADERS PERKS: Book through your Travel Leaders agent to receive the following: a 50 GBP spa

voucher per stay, complimentary full English breakfast for two daily, complimentary Wi-Fi, early check-in and late check-out upon availability, and upgrade upon availability at time of check-in.

MUST-TRY: Even casual travelers know that a visit to

London without afternoon tea is incomplete. May Fair Kitchen provides the complete tea experience, from white-glove service and fine china to clotted cream and scones, and goes a step beyond the traditional by offering tea-inspired cocktails like the Peppermint Tea Martini.

WHAT’S NEARBY: Mayfair is home to timeless London attractions that seamlessly blend the old

with the new. Just a few include the Mount Street Gardens; The Punchbowl, a pub open since 1729; and Handel & Hendrix, a museum celebrating George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix, both of whom lived on Mayfair’s Brook Street.

Trending DestinationBORA BORAVacationing in an overwater bungalow is

topping everyone’s bucket list.BY EMILY BENSON-SCOTT

Deep in the South Pacific, halfway between South America and Australia, lies Bora Bora, arguably one of the most alluring islands in the world. From the minute your plane touches the runway, you will be mesmerized by Bora Bora’s

exquisite natural beauty—the snow-white sand, soaring mountain peaks and miniature islands known as motus dotting the translucent turquoise waters.

Upon arrival, you will experience the warm hospitality of Polynesian culture as you are greeted by locals bestowing fresh flower leis, then ferried across a luminous lagoon to your overwater bungalow resort. ese traditional thatched-roof structures raised on stilts are one of the hottest trends in luxury travel. And while there are over 100 resorts worldwide that feature some form of these unmatched accommodations, the best ones by far are on Bora Bora. Referred to as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” the 11.3-square-mile island has optimal conditions for such lodging: e sea is blocked by a natural volcanic reef, creating a huge lagoon with idyllic shallow water as tranquil as a swimming pool. And while Bora Bora may seem too distant and paradisaical to be real, this island in French Polynesia is just an eight-hour flight from Los Angeles and an hour flight from Tahiti.

Start off any morning with breakfast brought directly to your overwater bungalow. Polynesian staff serve fresh fruits, pastries and juices from their flower-laden outrigger canoes while you watch the sun rise over the shimmering waters.

After breakfast, there’s no rush to get up and go anywhere, since you can snorkel or swim straight from your bungalow. Simply step right off your private sun deck into the warm lagoon teeming with

iridescent sea life. Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island resort, situated on gorgeous Matira Bay on the south side of the island, easily wins for the best snorkeling. But even without a mask, you’ll see plenty from the glass floor panels, including eels, octopuses and a dizzying array of colorful fish.

For more underwater exploration, arrange for a boat tour to watch schools of sharks fed by guides as you snorkel behind a secure rope. Or, stand in crystal-clear water as stingrays gracefully encircle you with their undulating wings and feed the rays yourself.

If you prefer to be above the water, explore the entire lagoon by Jet Ski, stopping at beaches or a tiny motu along the way for a picnic. Guided hikes to Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu are also a must on this island, which boasts a lush, verdant interior thanks to the remnants of an extinct volcano.

Another perk when staying at a resort with overwater bungalows: overwater spas. After an active day of snorkeling or hiking, pamper yourself at the Deep Ocean Spa at InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & alasso Spa. View a variety of tropical fish from the glass-bottomed treatment rooms while enjoying seawater therapy (aka thalassotherapy) using nutrients extracted from the deep-sea waters of the South Pacific. Combining a blend of modern wellness treatments with ancient Polynesian healing rituals, the spa will leave you feeling thoroughly relaxed and rejuvenated.

No matter how you spend your time here, it’s hard not to succumb to Bora Bora’s languid pace as you luxuriate in your overwater bungalow, so far-removed from daily life, you’ll need to experience it to believe that paradise really does exist.
