ldquoBefore the existence of the librarypatients would ask to borrow ourdepartment resources and would inquireof additional educational materialrdquoMarrale said ldquoUnfortunately we did not

have the resources to provide for theneed thus the proposal for the Patientand Family Resource Libraryrdquo

The library helps augment the servicesoffered through the Eating Disorder UnitMarrale said She also said the resourcesallow patients to make use of their freetime between scheduled programsPatients can select appropriate resourcesaccording to their own interests Thelibrary also provides parents and familymembers with materials that emphasizetheir important role in the recoveryprocess of their loved ones

Marrale said since the libraryrsquosestablishment it has garnered lots ofpositive feedback Over 100 patients andfamilies visited the library this year

The library is used daily and many of itsvisitors leave behind their grati cation oncomment cards ldquoThank you for allowingme to read this book and get great quotes

Smith said those members of UNC-DMwho are not nursing students those who

do not get to interact with the kids asmuch as she does need to understand

cause and working for a causein which you get to lay yourhands on the people said

Smith who is the hospitalevents sub-chair of theHospital committee

According to Smith workingat the hospital makes thestories of the hardshipspatients and families face inthe hospital real Its reallydifferent when you see thekids with their parents at theirbedsides -- this is everydayrdquoshe said ldquo Ill be in the hospital12 hours and then come homeexhausted -- but thats only12 hours Parents are therenonstop

Smith has been involved withUNC-DM since she was a rst-year She began her journey on

the Outreach committee andas a sophomore worked as asub-chair for the committeeOnce she found her passion fornursing she began volunteeringin the pediatric playroom oncea week for about a year anda half She then signed up forthe Hospital committee whichshe helps lead today

Smith said as a nursingstudent its hard to not want tojoin UNC-DMs efforts Working

in the hospital has changed herown perspective of UNC-DM

Before I started nursingI felt UNC-DM was veryobjective Now instead of justtalking about what were doingfor the hospital I actually getto see things working in thehospital I get more excitedfor meetings

Now whenever Smith hearsabout a new initiative or learnsabout a way in which UNC-DM is supporting the hospitalshe anticipates witnessingits implementation or useIt means a lot more being inthe hospital When you dontdirectly see things occurring

it distances you from the causeand can almost make you numbto what UNC-DM actually isshe said Being in the hospitalhas brought me back to theheart of our mission and why Igot involved in the rst place

Smiths initial desire forinvolvement started becauseof her sister former UNC-

DM dancer Natalie SmithSmith visited her sister atthe marathon and when she

walked into the gym and saweveryone freaking out shethought to herself What isthis for What merits this typeof craziness Once her sisterexplained it to her Smithpromised herself she wouldget involved when she was astudent at UNC

Now three years later sheis the one who plans UNC-DMshospital socials

Its been really cool to seepeople playing with kids andrunning after them [at thesocials] I love when I seepeople walking around campuswho you would never thinkthat laying on the oor coloring

with a kid would be their kindof funrdquo Smith said ldquoIts greatto see peoples faces light upas they paint kids faces orinteract with them The kidsand volunteering can bringout the other side in peoplerdquo

When looking toward themarathon Smith is especiallyexcited to meet the kids Im
