Support our rescue squadOn Saturday, Aug. 29, my wife caught

her toe on a shopping cart wheel at Food Lion and fell. Fortunately there was a rescue squad lieutenant who saw this and called for the duty team of Mark Novak and Tim Dickinson We helped my wife up and they checked her out. Her elbow was hurting and Mark suggested they take her to the emergency room. She didn’t think it was that bad but Mark was persistent and said if they take her she will be seen faster. She finally agreed and an x-ray confirmed that she had a broken elbow. The lesson here is to listen to our fine rescue squad volunteers. Lucille and I just want to thank Mark, Tim and the lieutenant (whose name I haven’t gotten) for being so proactive and so caring. We have a great team of volunteers to support us. Let’s all support them with our donations.

Celebrate Constitution weekThe Point of Fork Chapter of the

Daughters of the American Revolution would like to note that Constitution Week is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23. The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, free-

doms and inalienable rights.The celebration of the Constitution

was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR pe-titioned Congress to set aside September 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week with Sept 17 as Constitution Day - the date the document was signed.

The aims of the Constitution week cel-ebration are to:

• Emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Consti-tution.

Franklin Lee Burruss, 33, of Palmyra, will be hiring a lawyer to represent him against a charge of murdering his wife, Tayler L. Burruss.

His mother, father and sister testified Sept. 9 in Fluvanna County Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court that they will have hired a lawyer by next Wednesday. The hearing was held in part to deter-mine if the court needed to appoint a lawyer to represent Burruss.

At the brief hearing, Judge Claude V. Worrell set Wednesday (Sept. 16) for a bond hearing. Burruss is currently being held at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange County.

Burruss, who has no criminal record according to Fluvanna County Common-wealth’s Attorney Jeff Haislip, is charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of his 23-year-old wife.

She was found dead in her home at Lake Monticello on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Authorities have been tight-lipped about the case – the first murder to happen at Lake Monticello in many years.

A medical examiner has officially de-termined that the cause of death for a young Lake Monticello woman was homicide, according to a statement re-leased by the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday (Sept. 9).

“The manner of death is still under investigation by the medical examiner’s office and the results may take several weeks to determine,” the statement con-tinued.

Tayler Lindsey Harsch Burruss, 23, was found dead in her home on Jefferson Drive around 4 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 5) when deputies responded to a call for service.

Her husband, Franklin Lee Burruss, 33, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder. He is being held without

bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail. His bail hearing is set for Sept. 16.

Sheriff Eric Hess declined to release any additional details about the crime, and chose not to verify or debunk various rumors floating around the commu-nity. “We’re not addressing any rumors at this time,” he said. “We’ve got every-body working on what they need to be working on. We’re focusing on the case, not rumors.”

In the statement, the sheriff’s office thanked the Virginia State Police, the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lake Monticello Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.

One of Lake Monticello’s two battles against its water and sewer company, Aqua Virginia, is over.

On Sept. 9 the State Corporation Com-mission (SCC) ruled against Aqua Vir-ginia and other water companies, who had asked the SCC to establish rules under which they could seek a water and wastewater infrastructure service charge (WWISC). The service charge, a monthly fee in addition to customers’ normal water and sewer charges, would have di-rectly funded infrastructure projects.

“The proposed rules need not, and should not, be implemented,” stated the SCC’s order, putting to rest one of two hot-button issues many Aqua Virginia customers have with their water and sewer company.

The other fight – Aqua Virginia’s pending request to raise water rates by 8 to 21 percent and sewer rates by 4 to 13 percent – is still up in the air. Ken Schrad, spokes-person for the SCC, said that the hearing examiner’s ruling is expected “any day.”

The SCC ruled against Aqua Virginia and its fellow petitioners because it found blanket rules unnecessary. The need for infrastructure investment, and the corresponding need for Aqua Vir-ginia and other companies to recover that investment, can be addressed on a case-by-case basis that analyzes the spe-cific circumstances involved, the order stated. In fact, the order continued, not having blanket rules improves the ability of those involved to be flexible.

The ruling doesn’t deny Aqua Virginia the ability to request a surcharge or an infrastructure-driven rate increase as part of a regular rate case. But if an in-dividual company were to ask for such funds, Schrad said the SCC would want to make sure there wasn’t any “double recovery” occurring. In other words, the company couldn’t increase its base rates to account for those expenses and also request a surcharge. “It would need to be for a specific expense that wasn’t already built into or accommodated for by the existing rate structure,” he said.

The case, which was overseen by senior hearing examiner Alexander F. Skirpan,

Jr., garnered a significant amount of local attention. The SCC reported receiving written comments from five state legis-lators, 11 local governments and orga-nizations, and 413 individuals. On June 8 Skirpan recommended that the SCC deny Aqua Virginia’s petition.

One grassroots organization that fought the service charge is called FLUSH: For Low-Priced, Unpolluted, Safe H2O. Ida Swenson, former member of the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association (LMOA) Board of Directors, works closely with FLUSH, which she said is made up of Aqua Virginia customers across the state.

“Those of us who worked on defeating this rule change are thrilled that the SCC commissioners have ruled in favor of the ratepayers,” Swenson said. “We are not giving up the fight, but are taking it state-wide to the legislature to seek regula-tions that will look out even more for the interests of the people of Virginia. Water is more essential to life than any other utility. It deserves stricter rules that make clean, safe water available to all.”

Catherine Neelley, general manager of Lake Monticello, said, “LMOA was happy to learn of the SCC decision… This is ex-tremely good news for Aqua Virginia cus-tomers here at Lake Monticello.”

Gretchen Toner, spokesperson for Aqua America, said, “Aqua Virginia be-lieves that the prudent and timely re-placement of aging infrastructure best serves our customers and our communi-ties. We continue to hope to accelerate this replacement through an infrastruc-ture surcharge mechanism as many utili-ties now do throughout Virginia. While we are still reviewing the commission’s order, our primary focus is our custom-ers and how to best balance infrastruc-ture improvements with cost recovery.”

Aqua Virginia and its fellow petition-ers have 19 days to request the SCC to re-consider, said Schrad. Alternately they can appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court. Toner declined to comment on a possible appeal.

After the Sept. 5 death of Tayler Harsch Burruss, a young Lake Monticello woman, and the arrest of her husband, Franklin Lee Burruss, who has been charged with her murder, fresh atten-tion has arisen to the issue of domestic vio-lence.

On a mission to help women dealing with abuse is the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE), which serves Fluvanna, Albemar-le, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties and Charlottesville.

SHE’s program has two different branches. The organization offers a safe shelter for up to six weeks in a secret lo-cation for women and children fleeing abusive conditions at home. For those who don’t need or want to come to a shelter, SHE also provides a commu-nity-based program in which victims can receive the same services without coming to stay.

The 200 or so women and children who come to SHE’s shelter each year are often in a different boat than the roughly 170 who come in for community-based programs. “Someone seeking residential help has usually experienced physical abuse because they’re probably fearing for their safety,” said Sarah Ellis, SHE’s fundraising and development coordina-tor. “We see many women who come into the community-based system, about 150 or 180 a year, who aren’t experienc-ing violence but rather psychological or emotional abuse.”

The shelter has up to 24 beds, and the women and children are fed and cared for by “trained, qualified, and very expe-rienced advocates” or counselors, said Ellis. These case advocates discuss indi-vidually with each woman her circum-stances and plans, always emphasizing safety, Ellis said. “If it’s not safe for her to go back to her home, we think about whether she can or wants to find other alternatives, or if not, if she can work out some sort of safety planning before she returns home, but in a way that doesn’t put her at risk,” said Ellis.

Complicating matters is how women often juggle the needs of their families, said Ellis. “Sometimes there’s a lot of pressure on them to go back,” she ex-plained, “or sometimes they have diffi-culty finding financial means to support them making it out on their own. For others the question is the children, who may want to go back home to their famil-iar surroundings.”

After all, said Ellis, “Leaving home and going to a shelter is a huge task. If she’s never going to go home again

the children have to change their school, they’re going to lose all their friends – it’s a real challenge. Many people manage it; some don’t. We definitely work with them to find the safest way possible. In the end the choice has to be theirs. It’s never a very success-ful support system if we’re in some way coercing or pushing

her into something she’s not ready to do. Sometimes women leave the shelter and go back home, thinking the violence has ended, he’s learned a lesson – then they go back and find it hasn’t. Maybe the next time is the time she leaves.”

But Ellis couldn’t say how many repeat customers the shelter has, nor could she cite statistics on how many women choose to leave and how many return home. “We’re entirely client-centered so we don’t follow up,” Ellis said. “We’d love them to keep in touch but we’re not going to chase after them. That kind of follow-up is very difficult. Some women come back over and over again, but each time they’re a little bit stronger and have a little more information. When they’re ready they make their move.”

SHE is funded by state and local gov-ernment grants, said Ellis. It also receives funding from foundations, fundraising events, and private donations. “We also have a large volunteer force that helps us mostly in the evenings and on weekends with our hotline,” said Ellis. SHE has a 24-hour hotline at 434-293-8509 that’s confidential and free to anyone calling in to get information.

What if an abuser gets a female friend to pose as a victim in order to find the location of SHE’s hidden shelter? “We never give the information out so there’s no way anyone could do that,” said Ellis. “If someone wants to get to our shelter either police will bring them or they can go to the University of Virginia emergen-cy room. There’s a system there to help them get to the shelter.”

In the end, SHE focuses on the victim and what she needs – things she often hasn’t even considered herself. “One of the dynamics with domestic violence is the control and isolation that abusers often put on their victims,” said Ellis. “She’s often kept away from family and friends, people who can give her help – that’s a typical pattern for an abuser, to really isolate her from support, which allows him to really manipulate her emo-tionally and psychologically. She often has no real sense of what help is out there for her and how she can manage to get away.”

The pesky problem of the unap-proved roads in Fluvanna County is finally pushing toward progress, as Jason Stewart, planning and zoning adminis-trator, unveiled to the Board of Supervi-sors on Sept. 2 a list of the status of each unapproved road in the county.

The list, which contains 21 roads in about 11 subdivisions, marked each road’s progress along the path to accep-tance into the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) system.

The subdivision developers are cur-rently working with VDOT to complete the approval process in the case of seven of the unapproved roads. But for five of the roads on the list, Stewart discovered that the subdivision developers never contacted VDOT – an obvious reason for the lack of progress.

The remaining nine roads are awaiting completion of their VDOT punch lists, or requirements VDOT makes for a partic-ular roadway before it can be accepted into the state system.

The sticking point, however, is the price tag. Who is going to pay for the improvements? Typically developers put up bond money to pay for the necessary work to have their roads accepted into the state system. But that hasn’t always been the case in Fluvanna County.

During the real estate boom “staff was approving five to 10 subdivisions a month,” Stewart said, “so I can see how things kind of got lost in the shuffle.” In

some of those cases the developers never put up bonds. In other cases, some of the bond money was released back to the de-veloper before the process was complete, and now with years of wear and tear on the roads, the amount remaining in the bond isn’t enough to cover the costs.

Six of the roads currently awaiting completion of the VDOT punch list don’t have any bond money at all, and in the case of several others, the bond money likely isn’t adequate.

As supervisors went through the list, conversations about the various subdivi-sions popped up. “Just this last May we walked Country Creek Way [in Taylor

Ridge/Fox Hollow] with VDOT,” said Stewart. “They finally gave us a punch list last month. We’re trying to figure out what we need to do to secure that bond amount and to try to improve that street there.”

“But this amount of money [$16,575] won’t take care of it,” said Chairperson Mozell Booker.

“Most likely not,” answered Stewart.But the $30,000 bond on the two roads

in Needham Village may be enough to have those roads accepted into the state system, said County Administrator Steve Nichols.

“They’re still building the houses in there, but they’re getting to the point where it’ll be built out soon,” said Stewart. “So we’re trying to get VDOT out there, as soon as we can schedule it, to do a walk and get a punch list.”

Conversation then turned to Cun-ningham Meadows and Taylor Ridge, neither of which has any bond money. “Both subdivisions’ [roads] are com-pletely black top, both of them are not in great shape,” said Nichols. “It’s the edges of them, and also some of the culverts underneath the driveways, and then in some cases, mailboxes. We can enforce the mailboxes.”

After Stewart found the subdivisions with unapproved roads to be in violation of the county subdivision ordinance, which states that roads must be improved and accepted into the VDOT system, the

county stopped issuing building permits and certificates of occupancy for those subdivisions. Since that move froze the ability of successor developers or other agents to build or sell new homes, Liberty Homes decided to appeal the ruling in Cunningham Meadows. Super-visors upheld Stewart’s decision on July 15, and now Liberty Homes is working with VDOT to get the road in shape.

“At least in Cunningham Meadows somebody’s developing that, there’s a successor developer there that’s respon-sible,” said Nichols. “The problem is for Taylor Ridge there’s just no successor de-veloper and no bond… We won’t be au-thorizing any building permits in Taylor Ridge for sure unless somebody…takes care of the citizens.”

After the meeting Stewart reflected on the state of the unapproved roads in Fluvanna. “I think we’re beginning to take control of the situation,” he said. “We’re at a point where we know what’s out there now, and we’re starting on a path to making sure that we’re doing the right things to bring these roads into the system. Each subdivision is its own little entity. We’re trying to work with VDOT one subdivision at a time, bringing it into compliance.”

Going forward, Stewart is making sure that Fluvanna is doing it right the first time around. Any new subdivision will have bonds put up first, he said. “We may have some ordinance tweaks to be made, to clarify the processes so things aren’t as unclear as they were previously.”

Supervisor Tony O’Brien weighed in on the unapproved road situation by saying, “The challenge is substantial, but ultimately falls on either the developer or the subdivision owners. I do think that the county has an important role in ef-fectively enforcing the requirement to maintain the bonds and to let homeown-ers and builders know the options that are available to them. As roads require maintenance and are subject to deterio-ration, it behooves those affected to act sooner rather than later to take advan-tage of any remaining monies in bonds. I commend the county staff for working closely with VDOT and reaching out to affected subdivisions to find solutions.”

The county’s new hardball approach to the unapproved roads in Fluvanna is getting at least one subdivi-sion fixed.

On July 15 the Board of Supervisors voted to deny Liberty Home’s appeal of Planning and Zoning Adminis-trator Jason Stewart’s decision that the Cunningham Meadows subdivision off of Rt. 53 is in violation of the subdivision ordinance by not having its one road, Cunningham Meadows Drive, built to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) standards and ac-cepted into the state system.

The implication of Stewart’s decision, and the Board’s upholding of that deci-sion, is that Liberty Homes is unable to continue to develop lots in that subdivi-sion or sell any existing houses, because the county will not issue building permits or certificates of occupancy until the subdivision is brought into compliance.

So “as of Monday [Aug. 31], Liberty Homes was meeting with an excavator company, and they were trying to come up with an estimate of what they would need to do to either put up a bond or pay money to fix the road,” Stewart told su-pervisors Sept. 2.

“This is the one you held the line on and said, ‘No, it’s their responsibility, they’re the successor developer,’” County Admin-istrator Steve Nichols reminded supervi-sors. “And they’re actually moving now.”

If a subdivision’s initial developer goes bankrupt, the successor developer bears the responsibility to fix the roads. After the bankruptcy of Keith Smith, the origi-nal developer of Cunningham Meadows, Liberty Homes bought lots in the subdi-vision in order to build homes to sell. In the county’s opinion, that makes Liberty Homes the successor developer.

The problem with Cunningham Meadows Drive, said Nichols, is that the edges of the pavement “aren’t in great shape.” Neither are some of the culverts under the drive-

ways. And in some cases, residents have put mailboxes in the right-of-way, though Nichols noted that the county does have the power to enforce mailbox com-pliance.

Fixing the road, which is six-tenths of a mile long, may cost $130,000 to $160,000,

Nichols said. Some subdivisions have a bond, or money put up by the developer to pay for the roads to be built to state standards so that they can be accepted into the state system. But Cunningham Meadows does not.

“Unfortunately, there may be commu-nities that will have to maintain their own roads for years to come,” said Supervisor Tony O’Brien to the Fluvanna Review, “but I believe in the Cunningham Meadows sit-uation we have seen where this coopera-tive effort is paying off. Liberty Homes de-serves credit for stepping up and moving to solve the subdivision road needs proac-tively. There are some wonderful homes there and as they continue to sell and build out the subdivision everyone will benefit when the roads are completely turned over to VDOT.”

Shawn Tuthill, president of Liberty Homes, said that he met with VDOT and two members of the county planning de-partment to see what needed to be done to bring the roads up to state standards. “I’ve been talking to contractors to see what’s needed to move forward,” he said.

Cunningham Meadows resident Brian Eberhart, who has been involved with his subdivision’s road issues since he moved from out of state a few years ago, was thrilled to hear that Liberty Homes had decided to fix the road. “We got what we wanted,” he said. “In our case they determined that Liberty Homes was a successor developer. That’s exactly what we wanted done, and originally Liberty said they weren’t going to do it. Liberty was dead set against improving the roads till the county took an adamant stand.”

For thirty three years Angell Husted has been operating her fitness and dance studio out of one room but has now moved to her new location at 19 Centre Court, next to Palmyra Medical. She has expanded her space and is offering a few new classes.

“I’m adding three Pilates classes for 50 plus beginning in early October,” she said. “I am also adding a freestyle dance move-ment class with no specific choreogra-phy.” She explains the unique dance class will appeal to those who want to experi-ence body movement without worrying about choreography and learning steps.

Husted will of course continue her dance classes, her passion and her joy, teaching all ages from tots to grandmoth-ers. She said that she has had a love of

dance since she was a child, growing up in Pleasant Valley, NY. Starting at age six, Husted took ballet at Pat Moser’s School of Dance in Poughkeepsie, NY, and can relate to the youngsters that flock to her classes and want to learn to dance.

Husted, a former reporter, not only teaches dance but continues her fitness classes and personal training with a focus on health, well-being, good nutri-tion and coaching for overall health.

“It’s not a matter of telling them what to do but helping them to live a healthi-er life with good nutrition and exercise their way,” she said.

RAM is a volunteer medical relief corps that provides free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educa-tional assistance to people in remote areas of the United States, and around the world.

Dr. Vicki Weiss currently has a private prac-tice at Lake Monticello which was established in 1999 with her husband, Dr. Douglas Weiss. Since 1997, Dr. Vicki Weiss has been providing eye care in over 14 nursing and assisted living facilities in Central Virginia. The practice of Drs. Douglas and Vicki Weiss is one of two providers of Vision Therapy in the Charlottesville area.

Some of the coolest old-time farm equip-ment you can see anywhere will be just the tip of the iceberg at the 20th annual Old Farm Day to be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Pleasant Grove Park in Palmyra.

There will also be about 100 vendors, old-time craftsmen, contests galore, a barrel train and other activities for the kids, bluegrass and Americana music per-formances, great food and much more.

The heart of Old Farm Day still is the antique farm equipment, which is slated to become the centerpiece of the planned Fluvanna County Farm Heri-tage Museum (Old Farm Day is a fund-raiser for the Farm Heritage Museum and the Fluvanna Historical Society). Exhibits typically include early versions of motorized tractors, 100-plus-year-old

horse-drawn plows, historical carriages, donkey- or dog-powered tools, harvest-ers and dozens more. The exhibits also will include classic autos and trucks.

Heritage crafters will demonstrate such things as blacksmithing, weaving, chair caning, quilting and pottery making. Others will make and sell such things as jewelry, decorative items and clothing. And the Fluvanna High School Future Farmers of America will be stir-ring up old-fashioned apple butter. There will also be an old-time school exhibit, and raffles and sale items at the Histori-cal Society and Farm Museum tables.

Among the entertainment on the Old Farm Day stage will be the James River Cutups, an old-time bluegrass and gospel group, and Rockfish Gap, a bluegrass/Americana band offering a mix of origi-nal and traditional songs. Gospel and choral groups, plus cloggers and square dancers, also are expected to perform.

Special activities for the kids, in ad-dition to the popular barrel train, will include corn shucking, potato digging, building scarecrows, and more. A popular favorite is The Pink Cotton Candy Lady, who dazzles kids with her skill at spin-ning sugar into gossamer treats that are fun to eat. Kids also will get to tour fire trucks and other vehicles used by area fire and police departments and other safety/rescue groups.

Food vendors will serve chicken, burgers, hot dogs, fish, barbecue and tra-ditional snacks such as kettle corn, funnel cakes, snow cones and cold drinks.

Contests will include an Apple Pie Baking Contest, the Hay Bale Toss spon-sored by the Farm Bureau, and the peren-nial favorite, the Animal Sound Contest

for both adults and kids. Visitors will also tour the entries in the Barn Photography contest and make their own predictions on winners.

Among those planning booths are state, local and even federal government agen-cies, churches, community service orga-nizations, businesses and professionals. Local candidates and political groups will also be there, drumming up interest in an election year. And the Lions Club van will be there for free visual and audio testing. There will even be a Senior Kissing Booth.

Old Farm Day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Pleasant Grove Park on Rt. 53 in Palmyra. Admission is $5 for adults, but children 12 and under are free. No pets, please. The Flying Fluco sports teams are com-peting in a different Virginia High School League (VHSL) Conference again this season. Based on the number of students enrolled in the high school, the VHSL has placed the Flucos in Conference 29 which is a Region 3A West Conference.

Last year the Flucos were in Division 4, which consists of slightly larger high schools. In sports like football and bas-ketball, the Flucos still play their regular season schedule primarily against high schools from the old Jefferson District, which includes schools of varying sizes, but most of which are larger than Fluvanna high school. However, once playoffs begin, VHSL Conference assignments control, and teams go on to regional competition and state competition based on their VHSL classification.

In a sport like golf the Flucos are com-peting against conference 29 teams in multi-squad tournaments, and against traditional Jefferson District opponents in dual matches. Conference 29 includes the nearby schools of Monticello and Western Albemarle, but then skips west to include: Waynesboro, Fort Defiance, Spotswood (just south of Massanutten), Turner Ashby (in Bridgewater) and Broadway.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Fluco golf team hosted the second of three Conference 29 golf contests that will determine who qual-ifies for year-end Region 3A West competi-tion. This match was originally scheduled to be played at the Glenmore Golf Course, which is Monticello’s home course, but due to scheduling problems it had to be switched to the Lake Monticello course at the last moment.

In this competition, Coach Bryan Searcy’s young Fluco team moved up from its seventh place finish in the first Confer-ence 29 competition to a fifth place finish. Isaiah Boucher led the Fluco team with

a strong round of 82, while junior Jack Stanke came in with a 91. Tyler Marshall, the only senior on the squad was third best for the Flucos with a score of 94. The final Fluco score to be included in the team total (the four best of six) was 98. Sophomore Brennan Baber and freshman Drew Pace both recorded this score.

In the first of the Conference 29 com-petitions the Flucos were led by Jack Stanke’s 79. Brennan Baber came in at 92, while freshman Jack Kershner and junior Charley Searcy shot 104 and 106 respec-tively.

In the competition to determine which two schools from Conference 29 will go on to the Region 3A West showdown, all three Conference 29 matches will be counted. However, in the competition to see which individual golfers not on a qualifying team go on to regional play, only the two best of a players’ three conference meet scores will be counted.

The Fluco golf team’s season is already winding down. On Sept. 9 they played at Powhatan and on Sept. 11 at Orange County. On Sept. 15 they hosted Mon-ticello and on Sept. 17 they will travel to Albemarle. After that there is a District match on Sept. 21. The final Conference 29 match will be on Sept. 28. The Region 3A west competition is scheduled for Oct. 6 at Spotswood.

Scottsville VFW building needs roofThe VFW Post 8169 of Scottsville’s building has been through many years of wear and tear. Community ac-tivities, weather and natural dilapidation have left the chapter in need of raising $10,000 to replace the roof in order to continue serving its veterans. Unlike other area thrift stores, sup-ported by grants or other funding, Chris-tian Outreach Program and Pregnancy Center depends on customers to support them so their profits can go back to those who need it most in the community.

In past years, Christian Outreach has helped over 1,000 families, working with local churches, schools, the American Red Cross, social services and Habitat for Humanity. Those they have helped range from first-time mothers, abused women and children, families displaced by fires, food for the hungry, military families, individuals readjusting to life in society due to incarceration, children in foster care and working folks who may not be able to pay the rent or the water bill and can’t get help through the regular chan-nels because they don’t qualify.

Wanda McGhee and her daughter Stacy Greer and other volunteers manage two Christian Outreach stores, a large one in Buckingham and the one in Fluvanna. McGhee blames a sluggish economy for the lack of customers at the Fluvanna store. Monetary donations are down as well which has hit them hard.

“What we need are customers to shop at our Fluvanna store and organizations and individuals to support Christian Out-reach through donations,” said McGhee. She also said that when Goodwill moved into the Lake area, it hurt their business.

But with the help of volunteer, Diana Pickral, they are turning things around in

the store. “We made changes in both stores,” said

Stacy Greer. “We’ve been having our super sales, lowered all our prices throughout the store, having one price for clothes and books and a weekly special pricing list for all other items. For example an item for $5 or under would be 50 cents.”

In the last two months alone, Greer and her mother and others with the group have helped five families financially and at least six families with material assis-tance such as furniture.

“One family could only spend $50 for a sofa and a coffee table, but we added more for them, some chairs, a TV, and they were so grateful that we would do this for them and that someone cared,” said McGhee, who had tears in her eyes while telling the story. She added they help people find ve-hicles so they can get to work.

“Our goals have always been to extend God’s love and hope,” said Greer. “When

you can’t pay your bills, your lights are being turned off or you can’t pay your gas bill, you’re sick, have trouble paying medical bills or are abused; we want to be there to help financially as well as with material things.”

COPPC also has a Christmas program to help brighten the holidays for anyone in need of cheer with a tree and trim-mings and get families on a Christmas list so they can be adopted for gifts.

The Pregnancy Center supplies first-time moms with clothing for both baby and mother, baby and other items they may need. Wherever there is a need, COPPC will try to help and give support.

Greer says people can help in many ways, mostly by spreading the word and shoppers coming by the stores. Fluvanna is in dire need of support or McGhee is afraid they may have to shut their doors.

They also need or can use children’s and men’s clothing, women’s plus sizes, domestics, packaged underwear for fami-lies who have lost everything in a fire, gift cards to Walmart, Food Lion or COPPC. Donated vehicles are always needed.

“We need to increase business so that we can provide services for the commu-nity,” said Greer. “We are trying to make this place better than any other thrift store by being organized and cutting prices. We get calls weekly from people who need assistance financially and we just don’t have it right now.” Greer hopes this will change.

“We help many and work with many and we advertise often and still so many in both counties don’t know who we are or what we do,” she adds.

They have new items daily, including decorative items, clothing, purses, shoes and so much more for great prices.

“Coming soon we’ll feature camo, boots, fall jackets, and sterling silver and gems for your holiday gifts,” adds Greer. COPPC will also pick up donated furni-ture and other bulk items.

VolleyballThe Fluvanna varsity volleyball team

played hard, but lost away at Turner Ashby on Sept. 10. “We took an ‘L’ against Turner Ashby, but we didn’t go down without a fight. We have a lot of new faces on the team, but we’re getting better every day,” said junior Tiffany Hoyt.

According to senior Ashley Cordes, the team also put up a hard fight Sept. 12 against Albemarle in a tournament at Albemarle High School. The team played a total of five games, losing the first two but coming back to win the next three. Overall, they left the tournament with a 3-2 record. “The last one was an incred-ibly close game, but we pulled out the win,” said Cordes.

Both JV and varsity teams played a home game Sept. 15 against Charlottes-ville, followed by another home game on Sept. 17 against Louisa.

FootballThe Fluco varsity football team just

came off a bye week which they used to their advantage to help them prepare for the Homecoming game against Culpeper on Sept. 18. “Varsity has been working a lot with JV to help them improve skills and also help varsity to improve by helping out with JV,” said junior Captain Craig Russo. The game against Culpep-er will provide new challenges for the team.“This is the first spread offense we will face, so we really need to work on our pass coverage,” Russo said.

The team hopes to have success Friday night and come out with a win for their Homecoming weekend. “The team is ready for this coming up game because we know we can come out with a win. We lost by one point the last two games and those were ours to win. The only thing we have to do is to get over the

hump – which we can – and we will defi-nitely get the win this Friday,” said junior Mark Grooms.

The Homecoming festivities will kick off Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the Home-coming Parade line-up, followed by the parade at 6 p.m. A float contest will be judged by members of the Fluvanna Ed-ucation Foundation, with winning floats awarded prizes up to $300. The foot-ball game will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the Homecoming King and Queen an-nounced at half-time.

GolfThe Fluco golf team has been very

successful lately with two wins in their pocket going into this week. The Flucos competed at Powhatan and Orange last week and also played at their home course for the Conference 29 Invitational, where they defeated three out of eight teams. On Sept. 9, the Flucos traveled to Powhatan. The top six (Jack Stanke, Tyler Marshall, Brennan Baber, Isaiah Boucher, Drew Pace, and Jack Kershner) performed well overall, but lost by five strokes.

“We just didn’t play like we usually do. The weather may have been a deter-mining factor. We had to call the match after the eighth hole,” said sophomore Jack Kershner. Two days later, the Flucos were on the road to Orange County to play at Lake of the Woods, Orange’s home course. There, the Flucos were elated to win by one stroke. The team’s next match is Sept. 15 at home against Monticello.

Cross CountryThe boys’ cross country team dominat-

ed the course at the Fork Union Military Academy Invitational on Sept. 3. Jona-than Corbin, Jack Rice, and Andy Guess

all ran under 18 minutes for the three-mile course, while Andy Riddler, Morgan Milburn, Keegan Campan-elli, Jack Easter and James Byram

all had times under 19 minutes. “We ran great

and put everything together,” said Milburn. Meanwhile, the girls’ cross country team dominated as

well, with the top four coming in as follows: sophomore Kristen Cabrera (first), sophomore Saige Haney (second), junior Jackie Rodriguez (third), sophomore Haley Kennedy (fourth), and senior Bridget Bossong (fifth). The team had a home meet Sept. 16 at Pleasant Grove.
