ULTRACAPACITOR
SEMINAR 2012-2013NAME
Reg No: XXXXXX
INTRODUCTION• This is the newly available technology, balance the use of both energy
and power.
• It is an electro chemical capacitor with relatively high energy density.
• In conventional capacitor, energy is stored by the removal of charge carriers.
• In EDLC, energy stored in carbon pores.
• Exhibits high capacitance.
• Used in finite range of energy and power requirements.
ATTRACTIVE FEATURES
• Capacitance range up to 5000f
• No chemical reaction involved.
• Much more effective at rapid , regenerative energy storage than chemical batteries.
• Works even at low temperature ,-40 degrees celsius.
• Can effectively fulfill the requirement of high current pulses that can kill a battery if used insead.
CONSTRUCTION
WORKING
WORKING• When a voltage is applied, the ions are attracted to the
electrode with +ve charge , Where they cling to the pores in the carbon.
• Carbon does not react chemically with the ions.
• As the effective area much larger , High Capacitance obtained.
EDLC Vs BATTERIES
• Degrade within a few thousand charge-discharge cycle. Capacitor can have more than 300 000 charging cycles, which is far more than a battery can handle.
• Ultracapacitor charges within seconds where as batteries takes hrs.
• More effective at rapid, regenerative energy storage chemical batteries are.
• Batteries fail where high charging discharging takes place where as ultra capacitor fare extremely well.
EDLC Vs ORDINARY CAPACITORS
• Higher capacitance
• Same size capacitors charged to 1.5v EDLC light the bulb for 2 minutes.
• EDLC are expensive.
PROPERTIES
• Capacitance – Several thousands of farads.Up to 5000F
• Specific Energy – 0.5 to 30 Wh/kg.
• Power Density – 10 to 100 times greater than rechargeable battery.
• Self Discharge – Faster than electrolytic capacitor.
• Voltage – Maximum working voltage about 5V.
ADVANTAGES• Long life
• Low cost per cycle
• Good reversibility.
• Very high rate of charge and discharge.
• Low internal resistance & low heating level.
• High out put power.
• High specific power.
• Improved safety. No corrosive electrolyte and toxic materials.
• Simple charge methods. No danger of overcharging.
DISADVANTAGES
• Energy stored per unit weight is lower than that of an electrochemical battery.
• High rate of self discharge.
• Low maximum voltage.
• Effective storage and recovery of energy requires complex electronic control and switching equipment.
• Extremely rapid discharge when shorted.
APPLICATIONS
• Heavy and public transport- Starting diesel trucks, train, etc.
• Complementing Batteries.
• Consumer electronics.
• Military projects- For example, starting the engine of battle tanks and replacing the batteries in missiles.
CONCLUSION
• Ultra capacitors have many advantages over traditional electrochemical batteries.
