80% of our lifetime sun damage occurs by the age of 18. School age children may be at risk to sun damage via exposure to Ultra Violet Light. Education about Ultra Violet Light can lead to an empowerment of understanding about sun safety for school age children, parents, teachers, and administrators.

What is Ultra Violet Light
An invisible form of energy that travels through air and objects.
Electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light.

3 Types of UV rays
UVA- penetrates into skin and contributes to skin aging and wrinkling
UVB- most dangerous causing sun burs and skin cancer
UVC- Lethal, but absorbed by ozone layer and does not reach earth

Melanin
1st defense against the sun
Different concentrations and colors, resulting in different skin colors
The lighter the skin the less melanin it has to absorb the UV light

Human eye cannot see UV light, but some insects can
Things invisible to human eye can become visible under UV light
Produces Vitamin D in skin
New snow can reflect up to 80% of UV light, and bodies of water reflect less than 10%
Humidity increases the effects of UV light
UV levels at equator are over 1,000 times higher than that at the polar regions
UV light produced mainly by hot, young massive stars 15

UV light can cause skin cancer which is the most common cancer in the United States
Effective sun protection is practiced by less than one-third of the U.S. youth
Exposure to UV rays are strongest between 11 am and 1 pm= lunch recess
Can damage eyes-clouding of cornea-snow blindness
Destroy Vitamin A in skin

What Can be Done?
Ask youth what they know about the sun and how it can affect their health
Take part in an agency ran sun safety program
Inform parents/guardians about clothing policies at schools
Schools do not have the budget for sunscreen, so inform children about proper usage and supply them
