Possumsaremyproblem– theyhavebeen visitingmygardenforyears(Ihavebothringandbrushtail).Theyhavetakentheirwelcome for grantedbut haveoverstepped themark somuchlately that I need to make them feel unwelcome! They arerelentless in the damage they do. I have been trying themothball trick and it seems towork for very small areas i.e. ahanging basket or a pot plant but
hasn’tahopewhenshrubsorsmalltreesareinvolved.Alsogonearethedayswhen you used to buy a bag ofmothballs for a pittance, now it isseveraldollarsforabout10mothballs.Ithinkithassomethingtodowiththe fact that ‘they’ learnt how tomakebombsout of naphthalene (thebasic ingredient in mothballs) so the demand for the product hasincreased.Eversincethekidnappingofayoungfemale(waybackinthe90’s)Ihavebeenvisiteddailybyafamilyofkookaburraseachyear.Theybringintheirnewyoungandeachyearacoupleofthe3-4yearolds leavehome(havingdonetheirapprenticeship inchildcareandotherfamilyduties). Threemonthsago,thewholefamilystoppedvisiting–nofly-overs,novisitstothebiggumtree,nobathing intheponds–totalabsence,withnoexplanation. I reallymissthem. Ihave, however, noticed that some small birds are comingback and the littlehoney-eaters,whichhave only been coming in the early evening, now visit any time of day. About a month ago, 3sparrows(Iknowtheyarenotnativesbuttheyarereallygreatatkeepingthe‘pest’ leveldowninthegarden)appeared, stayed foracoupleofhoursand left. I startedwatching themaftera fewvisits;theyseemtocomeupfrom,andreturnto,thetowneachday.Thegroupshavenowgrownfromthreetoeight(wordseemstohavegotaround).Theyworkthegardendiligently.Itfeelsabitlikeagroupofitinerantworkerscrossingsomebordereachdaytoworkforlittleornopay.
Awag-tailhasalsore-appeared(Ithinkheisnestinginaclumpofbambooinaneighbouringyear. Wag-tailsusedtonesthereregularlybutstoppedsomeyearsagoHe‘supervises’thegardenandisverybossywiththeotherbirdssuchasmagpies,wattlebirdsetcwhichtotallyignorehim.One day a kookaburra appeared – he came on the deck begging for a
handout.Irecognisedhim–hewasoneofthe2yearoldsfromtheoldclan.Hestartedcomingindailyandwouldbatheinthesmallpondsinthefrontyard.OnedayIheardquiteacommotionfromthewag-tailsoIinvestigated.Thekookaburra,allwetandbedraggled,wassittingattheedgeofthepond;thewag-tailwasstandingonthepavementacoupleoffeetaway,yellingathim.Thewag-tailwasinsucharagethatthewasbouncingfromfoottofootandgettinglouderandlouder.Thiswenton for several minutes. I decided I had better break it up before it got physical. I think thekookaburrawasveryrelieved. Thewag-tailwasvery indignantandstartedshoutingatmebeforeleaving.Theybothstillvisitbutnowtheytimetheirvisitssothatthereisnooverlap.

CoffeeMorningWednesday6February-DarylBishop'sGardenApproximately 40 members enjoyed catching up, a delicious morning tea and a leisurely strollaroundDaryl'smagnificentgarden.Followingshowersovernight,thegardenlookedfreshlywashedandsparklinginthemorningsun. MemberswhohavenotpreviouslyhadthepleasureofvisitingDaryl'scompactgardenwereamazedatthequalityandvarietyofplantsonshow.ThankyouDarylforyourhospitalityandlettingusenjoyyourgardenonemoretime.

ThisfreepublicscreeningofUNDERSTOREY,byfilmmakerandawardwinningwildlifephotographer,DavidGallan,will be followedbyaQ&AwithDavidandOisin Sweeney, SeniorEcologist for theNational Parks Association of NSW (NPA), a Shoalhaven residentwho is leading the NPA’s forestcampaign.Thefilmdocumentsthe20yearfighttosavepartoftheSouthEastForestsfromlogging.Itfeaturesinterviewswithcampaigners,archival footageandwonderfulwildlifephotography togiveviewersaninsightintothenatureoftheforestsandwhatittooktoprotectthemfromtheintensiveloggingofthewoodchipindustry.Using some of the latest infrared camera technology the film captures rarely seen behaviours oflocalspeciessuchaslyrebirdsandspottedtailquolls.Attheendofalongcampaignacompromisewasreachedandnewnationalparksestablished.WiththeRegionalForestAgreementsthatgovernforestsintheareaduetoexpire,thistimelyfilmofferstheGreatSouthern Forestconceptasanalternativeplan.
