1 System Description

1.2 General information

The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply unit can be used with MOVIDRIVE® driveinverters operating in regenerative mode as an alternative to braking resistors. It is essential tohave a stable supply system for this purpose (→ Sec. 3.1 “Supply system requirements”).The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power unit supplies the DC link of the MOVIDRIVE® driveinverter with motor power from the supply and returns regenerative power to the supply from theDC link. This is performed using a supply system rectifier for the motor power and an inverter forthe regenerative power. The inverter is in an inverse-parallel connection with the input rectifier. The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply unit does not require an auxiliary powersupply or control signals. Operational readiness of MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A is signaled via a readysignal (X3:4) and a ready signal indicator.

Properties of the regenerative power supply unit in comparison to the inverter with braking resistor

• Energy balance: Regenerative power is fed back into the supply instead of being converted into waste heat.

• Reduced complexity of installation when there are several inverters (supply and braking resistor connections). However, a braking resistor is required for bringing the drive to a controlled stop even when there is a disruption in the power supply.

• Reduction in use of switching cabinet capacity and fan power where the braking resistor had previously been installed in the switching cabinet.

Protection and monitoring

• Monitoring and protection against thermal overload• Detection of power failure under load within one power supply system half-wave• Overvoltage protection

System Description 1

1.3 Operating characteristics

Provided the supply requirements are maintained (Sec. 3.1), the regenerative power supply unitallows safe operation with a brief overload capability of Imax = 150 %. Supply failures (affecting one or more phases) are detected under load within one power supplysystem half-wave. The regeneration is inhibited and the ready signal (X3:4) revoked. The return ofthe supply voltage is also detected within one power system half-wave and power feedback into thesupply resumes after a switch-on delay1) of 200 ms. The ready signal is then set again. However, the supply system rectifier of the regenerative power supply unit remains permanently switchedon. The ready signal is revoked whenever supply failures and thermal overload of the regenerativepower supply unit are detected. This ready signal must be evaluated in order to provide thermalprotection for the regenerative power supply unit (see Sec. 5.1).A braking resistor must also be connected to the inverter in order to allow connected drives to bebrought to a stop in a controlled fashion if there is a supply interruption or failure. The brakingresistor is only energized during braking when there is a supply interruption (see Sec. 3.5).

3 Project Planning

3 Project Planning

3.1 Supply system requirements

MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A must not be operated without a line choke connected on the supply side(→ Sec. 4.5)!

To ensure trouble-free operation of MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A, the relative short-circuit voltage UK atthe unit supply connection must not exceed the following values:

MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A must not be operated unless the Vshort values specified in the table aremaintained.

Determining the UK (short-circuit voltage) values:

The exact values must be determined by measurement if you do not have precise data for deter-mining the UK value.

The inductance of the existing supply connection (Lsupply, phase – phase) must be added to theinductance of the specified line choke Lchoke in order to calculate the effective total inductance LG.The effective UK value is then calculated on the basis of the following formula:

The following factor k is used for the various types of power systems:

Lsupply can be either measured or else calculated on the basis of the data of the high-voltage trans-former and the cable between the trafo and the power supply connection of the MDR.

Lsupply = Ltrafo + Lcable

The inductivity of the cable, Lcable, is approximately 0.7 µH/m.

Project Planning 3

The effective inductivity of the high-voltage transformer is calculated on the basis of the high-voltage transformer data (nameplate):

Ltrafo= Effective inductance of the high-voltage transformerST = Apparent power of the high-voltage transformer (rating plate)uKT = Short-circuit voltage of the high-voltage transformer (rating plate)

The following k2 factor is used for the various types of power systems:

Example: Vsupply = 400 VAC, fsupply = 50 Hz, ST = 250 kVA, uKT = 4 %Lcable = 0.07 mH (100 m), Lchoke = 0.03 mH (ND200-0033)

The uK value of 3.1 % is admissible; MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A may be operated.

Recommendation: Make provision for the use of the MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative powersupply unit by allowing the following power proportion for the regenerative power supply unitwhen setting the level of the power supply:

3.2 Inverter connected load / inverter combinations

• The momentary output power of all connected inverters must not exceed 150 % of the rated power of the regenerative power unit.

• The rated power of all connected inverters must not exceed 200 % of the rated power Prated of the regenerative power unit.

• Up to 6 MOVIDRIVE® inverters in sizes 1...5 can be connected to one regenerative energy sup-ply unit.

• Each drive inverter is graded with a number of points according to size. The regenerative energy supply unit can only be loaded with a combination of inverters up to a certain total of grading points.

• Inverter grading points: MDx BG1 1 MDx BG2 2 MDx BG3 4 MDx BG4 8 MDx BG5 15

3.3 Supply fuses and supply system lead

For the fusing and the selection of cable cross sections, the directions for different countries and for specific applications must be followed.

Supply fuses type F11/F12/F13:

The following types are suitable for protecting the supply system lead:a) fuses with electrical classification gL, gGb) circuit breakers with characteristics B,CTo make use of the overhung load capacity of the MOVIDRIVE® inverters connected to the regener-ative power supply unit, the rated current of the circuit breaker must exceed the total of the supplyrated currents of the MOVIDRIVE® inverters by 10 %. The cable cross section must be protectedby the selected circuit breaker. It must therefore be determined accordingly.

The following fuses are suitable for further protection of the unit:

a) Siemens, SITOR series, Type 3NE3 227b) EFEN, HLS fuses, Type NH-SI 2 250A aR 690Vc) Gould, A-66C series, Type A1-66C315D1

3.4 DC link fuse and DC link connection

DC link connection:A cable length up to a maximum of 5 m / 16.5 ft (with fuse) can be used. Where there is no fuse inthe DC link, VDE 0100 Part 30 authorizes a maximum of 3 m / 10 ft in the switching cabinet, inas-far as there is no heightened risk of fire. If the units are wired with the maximum connection crosssection possible, then a fuse in the DC link is not required. In any case, the cables should be keptas short as possible. The inverters must be connected in star formation around the regenerative energy supply unit.

Project Planning 3

Prefabricated cable sets:

SEW strongly recommends that the cable sets named below are used, because they possess therelevant dielectric strength and are also color-coded. This is necessary because a faulty DC linkconnection (false polarity, ground fault) could cause irreparable damage to the connected equip-ment. The length of the cables restricts the DC link connection to the permitted 5 m (16 ft 5 in),whilst they can also be cut to length by the customer for connecting several units. The cable setcomes with the lugs for connecting the regenerative power supply unit and an inverter of therespective sizes.

The cable sets consist of the following parts:

3.5 Selection of an optional braking resistor

In the event of a power failure or a malfunction of MDR60A during regenerative mode, a connectedinverter causes the “VDC Link overvoltage” fault if there is no braking resistor connected. Theinverter switches off immediately and the brake is applied. A drive without a brake coasts to a stop!In order to permit the drive to be brought to a stop in a controlled fashion in the event of a powerfailure, it is necessary to connect a braking resistor to the inverter. The braking resistor must pos-sess the maximum rated power of the inverter combination connected to the regenerative powersupply unit. It can be configured with a lower continuous power level since it is only subject to loadwhen a stop ramp is triggered in case of a power failure. However, it must be designed to copewith the maximum peak regenerative power which will arise. One braking resistor may be sufficient, even if several inverters are connected to MDR60A. Theoperating status of this inverter is not relevant for the brake chopper in this context, because itoperates independently and is only subject to the VDC Link voltage. Further inverters in the combina-tion must be fitted with a braking resistor if one inverter with a braking resistor cannot cope withthe maximum peak regenerative power which will arise.

Note:

Rule of thumb (worst case): Stopping (stop ramp) of the drives at the current limit of the inverters:

→ PStop = ΣPInverter x 150 %

Assignment of BW braking resistor to MOVIDRIVE® drive inverter

:

*) Physical power limit due to the DC link voltage and the braking resistor.

Further technical data on braking resistors: see the MOVIDRIVE® System Manual.

Example:

High-bay warehouse transporting equipment with 3 drives, only the drive unit for vertical motionand the travel drive can operate simultaneously;Emergency stop ramp = 1 second;Travel drive: MOVIDRIVE® MD_60A0300-503-4-00, Pmot = 30 kWDrive unit for vertical motion: MOVIDRIVE® MD_60A0450-503-4-00, Pmot = 45 kWTelescopic drive: MOVIDRIVE® MD_60A0022-503-4-00, Pmot = 2.2 kW

The simultaneity factor may differ for accleration and deceleration. Depending on the application, all the drives do not necessarily accelerate simultaneously (motive operation). Simultaneous bra-king (regenerative operation) for all drives in simultaneous travel must be provided for.

Checking permissibility of unit combinations for MDR60A0750

In this example the maximum permissible number of six inverters is not required. The permissiblecombination must be checked by determining the sum of the grading points (see "Inverter con-nected load / inverter combinations" on Page 13):• 1 MD_60A0300-503-4-00 = 4 points• 1 MD_60A0450-503-4-00 = 8 points• 1 MD_60A0022-503-3-00 = 1 pointsThis gives a total of 13 points, 45 points can be connected to the MDR60A0750, the connection ofthese three inverters to the regenerative power supply unit is therefore permissible.

Installation 4

• Check that the polarity of the DC link connections is correct, false polarity of the DC link con-nections could cause irreparable damage to the connected equipment! The DC link circuit con-nection carries a high DC voltage (approx. 900 V). Twist the DC link circuit cables together andonly route them within the switch cabinet.

• In the MOVIDRIVE® sizes 1 and 2 (MD_0015 ... MD_0110), the assignment of the terminals tothe connection of the DC link has been swapped over so that it is the same in all the drive inver-ters. This change is in effect as of Week 12/99.

• The inverter must connected in star to the regenerative power supply unit.

4.3 EMC-compliant installation

MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply units meet the requirements for compliancewith the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC provided the instructions regarding EMC-compliant installationare followed. Immunity to interference:With regard to immunity to interference, MOVIDRIVE® meets all the requirements stipulated inEN 50082-2 and EN 61800-3.Emitted interference:

Higher levels of interference are permitted in industries. In such an environment, it may be possibleto dispense with the measures described below depending on the situation of the power supplysystem and the machine configuration. Please refer to “Drive Engineering – Practical Implementation, Vol. 9” for more information aboutelectromagnetic compatibility. This publication can be obtained from SEW under order number0923 1013.• The control cables must be shielded.

• Connect the shield by the shortest possible route and make sure it is grounded over a wide area. To avoid ground loops, it is possible to ground one end of the shield via a suppression capacitor (220 nF / 50 V). If using double-shielded cables, earth the outer shield on the MOVIDRIVE® end and the inner shield on the other end.

• Another basic requirement for shielding is that all cables must be laid separately in individual, grounded sheet metal ducts or pipes.

• Provide high frequency-compatible grounding for MOVIDRIVE® and all additional units (wide area metal-on-metal contact between the unit housing and ground, e.g. unpainted switch cabinet mounting panel).

• A supply filter must be installed. Fit the supply filter close to MDR60A beyond the minimum clearance.

4.4 UL-compliant installation

For UL-compliant installation, please observe the following instructions:• For the connecting cables use only copper leads with a temperature range of at least 75° C.• The permissible tightening torques of the MOVIDRIVE® power terminals are:

– for size 3 (MDR60A0370) → 3.5 Nm (31 lb.in)– for size 4 (MDR60A0750) → 14 Nm (124 lb.in)

• MOVIDRIVE® drive inverters are suitable for operation in voltage systems with a maximum voltage of 500 VAC. The maximum permissible power supply current and the dimensioning of the power supply fuses can be found in the MOVIDRIVE® system manual or the operating instructions.

Startup 5

5 Startup

5.1 Evaluation of the ready signal

The ready signal from the regenerative power supply unit is switched in the event of a thermaloverload of MDR60A and a power failure. One of the following responses must accompany thissignal:[a] Disconnect the regenerative power supply unit from the supply immediately.[b] Switch off the inverters connected to the regenerative power supply unit immediately.[c] Switch off the inverters connected to the regenerative power supply unit with a time delay.[d] Bring the drives to a controlled stop. The focus in points [a] – [c] is directed towards thermal protection of the unit whilst [d] is princi-pally concerned with stopping the drives.

The following picture shows how the ready signal (ready) from the regenerative power supply unitmust be connected to the “supply on” binary input of the inverter in order to perform evaluation inaccordance with [b] – [d].

01884AENFig. 7: Ready signal as supply on signal

[a] Disconnect the regenerative power supply unit from the supply immediately:

The ready signal must be used for switching off the supply system contactor K11 from the regen-erative power supply unit in order to protect the regenerative power supply unit against thermaloverload.

[b] Switch off the inverters connected to the regenerative power supply unit immediately:

The ready signal is sent to a digital input of all connected inverters. The parameters of this inputshould be set to “supply ON” (P60_) which permits the inverter to switch off (P521 “supply OFFresponse” = CONTROL.INHIBIT). The “supply OFF response time” (P520) must be set to 0 sec-onds.Inverter parameter setting:

P520 (supply OFF response time) = 0 sec.P521 (supply OFF response) = CONTROL.INHIBITP60_ (Binary input) = supply ON

5 Startup

[c] Switch off the inverters connected to the regenerative power supply unit with a time delay:

The following possibility is available if supply failures during motor operation should not immedi-ately give rise to an inverter switch-off, e.g. if the supply quality is poor:Proceed in accordance with [b]. Set the “supply OFF response time” (P520 → Sec. 5.2) to ≥ 300ms so the switch-on delay (200 ms) of the regenerative power supply unit after the return of supplyvoltage is bridged. Supply failures of no longer than the supply off response time minus 200 ms donot lead to the inverters switching off.The inverters will have to be equipped with braking resistors if supply failures in regenerative modeas well should not lead to the inverters being switched off immediately.Inverter parameter setting:

P520 (supply OFF response time) = 0.3 – 0.5 sec.P521 (supply OFF response) = CONTROL.INHIBITP60_ (Binary input) = supply ON

[d] Bring the drives to a controlled stop:

The inverters must be fitted with braking resistors in order to allow the drives to be brought to a con-trolled stop (emergency stop ramp) in the event of a power failure or a fault in the unit (see Sec. 3.5). Proceed in accordance with [b]. The emergency stop ramp must be initiated immediately and setshort enough so the drive remains in regenerative mode until coming to a stop. The “supply OFFresponse time” (P520) must be set to 0 ms. Inverter parameter setting:

P137 (Emergency ramp) = xxx msP520 (supply OFF response time) = 0 sec.P521 (supply OFF response) = EMERGENCY STOPP60_ (Binary input) = supply ON

5.2 Parameter setting of P52_ “supply OFF monitoring”

Program a MOVIDRIVE® binary input (P60_/P61_) to “supply ON” in order to permit an externalsupply on signal to be evaluated. The ready signal from the MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerativepower supply unit is used as the supply on signal.

P520 “supply OFF response time” (setting range: 0– 5 s; steps: 0.1 s)This parameter sets the delay during which no response takes place to a supply failure. Thesupply off response time must be set ≥ 300 ms, because the ready signal of the regenerativepower supply unit is set to a “0” signal for 200 ms in the event of brief supply failures. Nodelay is in effect when P520 is set < 300 ms.

P521 “supply OFF response” (setting range: CONTROL.INHIBIT/EMERGENCY STOP)The supply off response takes effect if the supply on signal = 0 and the supply off responsetime has elapsed. The supply off response does not produce a fault message in the inverter. The following settings can be made:1. CONTROL.INHIBIT: The output stage is inhibited (= high-resistance) and the brake is

applied or a motor without a brake coasts to a stop. The driverestarts when the supply on signal = 1.

2. EMERGENCY STOP: A stop is initiated using the emergency ramp (t14/t24). The brake isapplied when the start/stop speed (P300/P310) is reached. Theemergency stop is interrupted and the drive restarted if the supply onsignal changes to “1” during the stopping procedure.

Operation and Servicing 6

6 Operation and Servicing

6.1 Reset

a) Regenerative power supply unitThe regenerative power supply unit is automatically reset after it has been switched off (see Sec.1.3).b) Inverter:The supply off response does not produce a fault message in the inverter (no reset required). Otherfaults, e.g. “VDC link overvoltage” must be reset. To do this, program a binary input on the inverterto “RESET”. The reset is activated by a positive edge (“0” signal → “1” signal). A reset can also beachieved by switching the supply voltage off and on again.
