Dear Friends!

together we go from glory to glory, from one glory of God to the next. the past year is evidence and proof of God’s great love and support for us.

In December of 2012, 300 staff, students, and friends of the Ukrainian Catholic University attended the ceremony at notre Dame Cathedral during which I became the eparch of the eparchy of Paris of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Ukrainians in Paris presented themselves very openly and ceremoniously – with a procession from Saint Volodymyr’s Cathedral to notre Dame de Paris. I am happy that the UCU community shared this celebration with the faithful of the eparchy and with me, and am grateful that it helps us build the eparchy. this is further evidence of the global mission of the university, which is the only Catholic university in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. With your help, awareness and implementation of our mission will continue to grow and expand.

and UCU’s mission and high standards are clearly in evidence. On September 3, after its dedication, the new and innovative academic building opened its doors to students and staff. It is the second building of the new UCU campus. History students and participants of the programs of the Institute of Leadership and Management, Lviv Business School, and School of Bioethics will study in its walls. On the same day, Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Grand Chancellor of UCU, blessed the cornerstone of UCU’s St. Sophia’s Church, the construction of which will be completed in 2015.

the year 2013 was transitional for the university, and it was crowned with the fact that I sign this report as the president of UCU. During the celebration on September 3, Patriarch Sviatoslav announced that the new rector of our university is Fr. Bohdan Prach, PhD, a dedicated priest and pastor in various countries, longtime Vice-Rector of UCU, former Rector of Holy Spirit Seminary in Lviv, and an inspiring organizer of the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine. It is with great joy and hope that I watch the new rector begin work in his new position, admiring his quiet and tireless energy. Frankly speaking, I consider him to be one of the best managers in Ukraine, and he is someone from whom I learned much and continue to learn. He is worthy of your attention and I ask you all to support him wholeheartedly. the president also has the responsibility to watch over the overall strategy and spirit of the university and to be a counselor to the rector and administration. I will also be partially responsible for international relations and fundraising for UCU. In other words, I will remain involved in the life of the university.

this year the Ukrainian Catholic University celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding. It was in the autumn of 1963, shortly after his release after 18 years of imprisonment and exile, that Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj established the Pope Clement Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome. With no buildings, no money, and no teachers, our founder desired greater and greater achievements.

the celebration that we started with the dedication of a multifunctional building in Lviv continues in Paris and in Rome, in London and north america. the milestone 50th anniversary gives us a chance to see and understand more deeply our university’s tradition and the heritage of our great predecessors, as well as a chance to reflect on how we can establish, continue, and develop this tradition and heritage.

I am very grateful to all those who participate in the development of the university. Your support is precious.

+ BORYS (Gudziak),President of the Ukrainian Catholic University

From 2002 to September 3, 2013 – Rector of UCU

UCU Grand Chancellor His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) by his decree named His excellency Bishop Borys (Gudziak) president of the Ukrainian Catholic University with all the responsibilities and rights of this position. By another decree, on the basis of the Statutes of the University, the patriarch of the UGCC appointed as rector of the university Rev. Bohdan Prach, PhD, who to that time was vice rector for external affairs: “You have a great amount of work before you. Be assured that we are with you, I as chancellor and Bishop Borys as president.”

UCU’s new campus IS EXPANDINGat the start of September the new academic building was blessed and opened. this is the second building on the campus, after the Patriarch Josyf Slipyj Collegium. History students and participants in the programs of the Lviv Business School, the Institute of Leadership and Management, and the School of Bioethics will study in the new building.

During planning and construction, the architects and builders used the latest technology, which makes the building truly modern and innovative. One of the special features of the structure is a large dining hall with 250 places, where up to 2000 people can be served during a day. When necessary, this area can also be used as a conference hall which can seat 350 people.

The third and fourth floors have a terrace with garden and the roof has solar batteries with the help of which hot water can be provided for this building and the collegium.

rector, Rev. Bohdan Prach, PhD:

“The university, understanding its mission and the needs of society and responding to today’s challenges, should be independent and autonomous, so that it can make its own decisions. So, one of our assignments is self-determination. Also before us stands the task of developing knowledge and openness among branches of the university, the city, the region, the country and society. At UCU we think more broadly – not only about the education of students but about the development of scholarly potential, for the quality of knowledge is our priority.”

The International Philosophy Symposium “Ethics in the Global World: Reflections on Civic Virtues” brought to Lviv more than 100 scholars from Canada, the US, France, Germany, Ukraine, and Lebanon.

among the speakers were Jose Casanova (US), Peter McCormick (France), aloys Buch (Germany), Victor Malakhov (Ukraine), and edward alam (Lebanon).

During the symposium, UCU announced that it was creating an International Institute for ethics and Contemporary Issues.

as Volodymyr turchynovskyy, director of the newly-created institute, explained, in recent years the university’s Philosophy Department has fruitfully worked in the field of ethics. This is demonstrated not only by publications and scholarly seminars but by various certificate programs, summer schools and conferences that have been held since 2008. as a result of this, and also in response to the needs of Ukrainian society,

the International Institute for ethics has been created.

“I think that this institute is proposing and contributing an alternative in its programs, a style of leadership, and also something new in our city and country,” stated Bishop Borys (Gudziak). “But this is not the end of our ambitions. From the very beginning of the development of the university we worked with the conviction that we need to serve the world community. So a great responsibility has been placed on us – to look for answers to the problems of the whole world. and I am convinced that we will make our contribution in this matter.”

an important task of the institute is to start a network for cooperation among philosophical institutions of education and research in eastern europe, so that scholars from Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Russia, the Czech Republic, Belarus and other countries can work more effectively in developing the themes of their research, gaining the widest field for work and the exchange of ideas.

720 years of the Institute of Church History

“The Institute of Church History is a living bridge between

representatives of the catacomb church and modern generations.”

Rev. Andriy Mykhaleyko, PhD, Director of the Institute

(2008-2013)

the largest and most important project of the Institute of Church History is the creation of an archive of oral interviews on religious persecution in western Ukraine. today the archive holds more than 2000 audio interviews, 100 video interviews, more than 5000 photos and documents, 700 museum items, and ongoing additions. and young researchers work with these materials. another important area of the institute’s work is conferences and publishing. Since its establishment the institute has organized numerous conferences on the Union of Brest, denominational and national identity, Soviet persecution of religion, the concept of Kyivan Christianity, and other themes.

LvBS is a school with european values and approaches, which is forming an open and responsible business community. the goal of the school is to foster the development

of visionaries who will pro-actively build up the Ukrainian business environment. In

addition to a good business education, it brings to life the desire of its founders that

Ukrainian business love its nation and be involved in the development of the country.

“Here theology and business are brought close together, which is something unusual for Ukraine,” stated UCU President Bishop

Borys (Gudziak).

“LvBS is so extraordinary because this university is so extraordinary. We take pride in our little victories, these projects which the MBA graduates implement, their successes in management, the opening of professional-level master’s programs in innovation and technology management (IT). We are proud of our community, which cares about the country’s future. This is the only school that vocally poses questions about values and responsible business.” LvBS CEO Sophia Opatska

50 years of the Ukrainian Catholic University

In 1963 after 18 years of imprisonment in camps, Josyf Slipyj, the head of the UGCC, arrived in Rome. His first decree concerned the establishment of the Ukrainian Catholic University, and a little later, the patriarch established the College of St.Sophia. the students of UCU and the College of St.Sophia thought about how the church needs its own theology and its own educational and research institution. UCU in Lviv is the direct successor of the university in Rome. It began operating as the Lviv theological academy, and in 2002 was inaugurated as the Ukrainian Catholic University.

“Beginning the celebrations of the golden jubilee of the Ukrainian Catholic University,

we are grateful that the brainchild of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj is a blessing for our

church. UCU is God’s great gift to the UGCC. It is a sign that here is a living community

of faithful people who are seeking not human power and praise but knowledge

and the truth.” His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), Head of the UGCC

the UCU Library Joins the european association of Catholic Librariesthe association unites the libraries of numerous Catholic universities, theology faculties and seminaries of europe. Its goal is to encourage the exchange of literature, experience, and staff; to organize joint subscriptions for electronic resources; and to coordinate the activities of Catholic libraries. One of the newest cooperative projects is “The network of theological literature.”

George Weigel’s book The End and the Beginning: Pope John Paul II--The Victory of Freedom, the Last Years, the Legacy has been translated by the UCU Press. It’s a continuation of the best-seller “Witness to Hope: the Biography of Pope John Paul II,” which UCU translated in 2011. That book was a laureate in the 14th All-Ukrainian“Book of the Year” rating.

“In this book the author first of all attempts to make a certain summation in context of the process of beatification of Blessed Pope John Paul II. this is an expert analysis of both achievements and problems that the Church was left to live with after the Pope passed away.” So UCU Vice-Rector and historian Prof. Oleh turiy commented on the presentation.

Andreas Widmer’s book The Pope & The CEO is a narrative and also an authoritative master-class in the art of managing affairs, people, and lives, which step by step reveals the road to success and, at the same time, to holiness.

the author tries to gives answers to those questions that every person asks: how to achieve success; what values should guide you

when you work with people; how, finally, to live a life with happiness and meaning, not sacrificing family life for one’s profession or vice versa? to answer these questions, the author suggests using his experience, tested by his long career in international business and consulting activities in third World countries. He formulated these answers for himself at a young age, while serving as a Swiss guard at the Vatican during the pontificate of John Paul II.

In his work The Great Return: Religion in Global Policy and International Relations from the End of the 19th to the Start of the 21st Centuries, Victor Yelensky analyzes the stormy rebirth of religion in the modern world, its powerful penetration into the sphere of high-level politics and international relations, and its role in global transformations and processes of regional change. the most striking examples of this “return of religion” are the Islamic explosion, Evangelical and Catholic growth, religious awakening in the post-communist world, China and India, the advance of religious nationalism, and the threatening wave of religiously-motivated terror. Special attention is given to Ukraine, where the “return of religion” is closely connected with nation-building and sociopolitical transformation.

New publications:

5 00012 000the library received additions to its collection of books on philosophy and ethics. Professor Peter McCormick donated more than 5,000 books in english, German, French, and Italian.

the theological Faculty of tilburg University (netherlands) gave UCU 12,000 books. this is the largest gift of academic theological literature in the library’s history. an integrated and self-sufficient library has available the best western academic literature in various fields of theology and related disciplines.

Discovering the gifts of the disabled!

UCU honored as Lviv’s best social investor

Christina Angles d’Auriac, A french citizen who for three years has directed the emmaus center of Spiritual Support for Persons with Special Needs

“Each person in the world has his or her purpose, is unique and desired by the Lord. We believe that the

developmentally disabled have a special vocation in our world. God, through them, wants to say

something to us. Our developmentally disabled friends teach us to accept everything that happens to

us as the Lord’s grace. Through their weakness and dependence on us they call us to love.”

UCU Rector Rev. Bohdan Prach, PhD:

“This award is an acknowledgement that the social-educational projects that are implemented at our university are important for our country. And so new educational projects are, in their own way, investments in the future.”

the emmaus Center was created with the goal of supporting persons with special needs, their families, and also all those who share their lives with them. It has operated at the Ukrainian Catholic University since 2001.

With the opening of the university’s Collegium, three friends with special needs now live there, at the emmaus House. three assistants also live with them. the assistants accompany the friends throughout the day, to the

workshop, for walks, to shop, and they spend time together at home. they take part in daily liturgical services at the Collegium, they have regular meetings with the Collegium’s master, and they pray together at the emmaus House.

During the Second International Investment and Innovation Forum, held in Lviv, nominees and winners for the “Investor of 2012” contest were honored. The “best social investor” was the Ukrainian Catholic University.

the organizers celebrated the various social-educational projects that the university has been able to bring to life. among these are the opening of the master’s degree program in innovation and entrepreneurship, the master’s degree program in journalism, the certificate program in health care, the certificate program in conflict resolution, and also the School of Ukrainian Language and Culture, at which every summer foreigners from the whole world study the Ukrainian language and traditions.

The most significant event was the opening of UCU’s Patriarch Josyf Slipyj Collegium.

Volunteers from the Student Charity Center visited the orphanage in Dobromyl on St. nicholas Day. the center reaches out to orphans, children from disadvantaged families, and older people living alone.“In addition to material support, we work with the children spiritually: we conduct catechism, celebrate holy days, organize trips – we do everything so that the children will feel our love, will feel needed, so they don’t lose hope and faith in God or despair in life.” So said the head of the center, anastasia Myronova, a student in the Humanities Faculty.

Adrian Slywotzky, partner at oliver Wyman, world-class business thinker

Why do I donate to UCU? Because they think things out, they’re organized, they make connections, they have a network of professors in America and Europe with whom they cooperate. UCU also has a unique philosophy and approach. When we talk about religion or the Church, the key word is “prayer,” for business, it’s”‘work.” UCU has brought together both words – prayer and work, the ethical with the practical.
