PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS Ukraine is the 44th largest country in the world

• Ukraine’s landscape consists primarily of fertile plains and plateaus . • The Dnieper, Seversky Donets, Duiester and SouthernBuh are four

of the main rivers in Ukraine which flow into the Black Sea.• The Carpathian Mountains are the only mountains in the country.• Some of the more significant natural resources in Ukraine include

timber, iron ore, oil, coal, manganese, natural gas, salt, sulfur, titanium, magnesium, graphite, kaolin, nickel and mercury,

CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS• Christianity is the dominant religion in Ukraine.• Ukraine’s culture is reflected in its art, music and architecture.

Prior to the early 1980s, creativity was greatly stifled. It wasn’t until the Glasnost period in the later 1980s was introduced that artists and writers were free to express themselves as they wished.

• One of the interesting traditions of Ukraine is the Easter Egg or the Pysanky. These eggs were made from wax and creative patterns drawn on the wax forming a traditional egg that today dates back over thousands of years.

CUSTOMS• The state language is Ukrainian Russian.• Traditional Ukrainian diets include chicken, pork, beef, fish and

mushrooms. A popular food is Borscht soup.• Physical education is important in Ukraine. There are a lot of pools,

stadiums, and arenas available for use. The most popular sport is football.

• Classical music is listedned to frquently. A notable musician in the early 1900s was Mykola Lysenko, he is referred to as the father of Ukrainian classical music.

HISTORY• Human settlement dates back to 32,000 BCE.• Keiv is the Capital of Ukraine.• Keiv became the most powerful and largest state during

the 10th and 11th centuries.• “The Ruin” (1657-1686) was a 30 year war between

Poland, Russia, Turks, and Cossacks to gain control of the Ukraine

• In the early 19th century there was an on going migration from Ukraine to distant areas of the Russian Empire.

• When World War I started the Ukraine entered into the central powers.
