CMD highlights the need to produce steel at low costSri AP Choudhary, CMD highlighted the need for the Steel Industry to produce steel at the lowest cost, as it is prime requisitefor not only sustainable growth but also for generation of adequate margins to fund the investments for future capacityadditions in the country. While addressing the "Steel Industry 2013" summit organized by the FICCI in Mumbai on 11th Apr,he said improvement in techno-economic parameters, such as specific energy consumption, raw material consumption, productivity & yields, waste recycling, waste heat recovery and other relevant areas would largely contribute to reduce thecost of production. Ministry of Steel has rightly identified these parameters as benchmarking to reorient the various steelmaking processes through adoption of "Best Available Technology" and "Best Available Practices" to sensitize the varioussteel producers to achieve the best level of performance with efficient techno-economic parameters, he added.

Sri Choudhary mentioned that the next major challenge is on the raw material front. Cost is the main driver for competitiveness and morethan 60% of the steel production cost is on account of raw materials. Adequate support is therefore required for such plants to ensureavailability of the key raw materials at a reasonable cost to ensure competiveness in the industry. He observed that time has come wherethe steel companies have to transform themselves to "niche" or "multi niche" operators. This transformation is possible only throughinnovation and calls for a coherent effective strategy for focused innovative efforts through R&D. He said that every tonne of steel requiresapproximately 12 tonnes of inputs (6 tonnes of air; 3 tonnes of water; & 3 tonnes of raw materials). The process also generates effluents, solid wastes; emits green house gasses; and effective control of these is imminent for the industry. The development of energy efficientprocesses for reduced emissions and maximization of re-cycling of wastes have to assume centre stage for the industry to manage itsgrowth profitably.

The impact of India on the global steel market is going to be strong in the near future. The demographics of the country are advantageous andwith its highly educated workforce, India will be the country to note on the global arena. World Steel Dynamics is of the opinion that Indian steelproduction is likely to outstrip the rise in steel demand in the next decade, unleashing a wave of low cost exports from the country on the worldmarket, Sri Choudhary observed. SriUP Singh, Jt. Secretary, Ministry ofSteel, Sri Roongta, Chairman, FICCISteel & Non-Ferrous MetalsCommittee, Sri Seshagiri Rao, JointManaging Director , Sri DilipOmmen, CEO & Managing Director,Essar Dr.Didar Singh, SecretaryGeneral, FICCI & Steel Technocratsetc participated in the summit.

'Doctor of Philosophy' in Mechanical Engineering awardedSri S B V S P Sastry, AGM (MS) has been awarded the degree of 'Doctor of Philosophy' in Mechanical Engineeringfrom Andhra University, Visakhapatnam on 3rd May. He submitted the thesis titled 'Optimal Lot-Size Modelsfor Waste Minimization in a Product Oriented Plant' under the guidance of Prof. V.V.S. Kesava Rao, MechanicalEngineering department, College of Engineering, Andhra University. As in today's world, manufacturers aregiving more thrust on quality and cost reduction aspects through the concept of Lean, the desired qualitycan be achieved by operating in a perfect environment which is affected due to variations in the raw material

qualities, skill levels of workers, inspection procedures, operating practices, machine conditions etc. This researchconsidered and developed Economic lot size models in the areas of imperfection in manufacturing system. The SensitivityAnalysis was carried out to the above models and minimization of waste was achieved by reworking of defectives items, reusable items and reduction of inventory cost.
