Join usYou are invited to attend the 10th UK Speechwriters’ Guild/European Speechwriter Network Conference at Westminster College, Cambridge on 15 to 17 April 2015.

The conference runs from the Thursday morning to the Friday lunchtime, with a day of pre-conference training on the Wednesday.

Delegates can choose from three pre-conference training workshops. The trainers are Eric Schnure, Denise Graveline, Martha Leyton and Martin Shovel.

You do not need any prior experience of speechwriting to attend the training or the conference. This conference is for anyone wanting to improve their ability to write and deliver speeches.

Wisdom from the White HouseBasic Speechwriting Techniques from the Best American SpeechwritersEric Schnure, Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University

Pre-conference

For more than 20 years, former White House speechwriter, Eric Schnure, has counselled leading executives and organisations, helping make their messages more memorable, their words more effective and their delivery more powerful. Eric serves as an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University where he teaches speechwriting, and he previously taught at American University.

Eric Schnure graduated from Hobart College and received a master’s degree in International History from the London School of Economics.

Eric will present an interactive workshop to share the principles of speechwriting he learnt in his role as a White House speechwriter.

Denise is a Washington DC-based communications consultant and speaker trainer. She calls her consultancy don’t get caught because she helps clients make sure they don’t get caught unprepared, speechless or behind the curve with training and strategies. She is also the author and publisher of The Eloquent Woman, a popular blog on women and public speaking.

Denise will be running a workshop on what goes into a TED-quality talk: write and deliver an 18 minute talk for the YouTube generation.

Words that Move MountainsA Masterclass in Persuasive WritingWith Martin Shovel and Martha Leyton of CreativityWorks

Martin and Martha run UK consultancy CreativityWorks. They write speeches for chief executives, politicians, leaders of trade unions and professional organisations, and they train speechwriters and other communications professionals.

Martin is also a prolific cartoonist and commentator on Twitter, and he and Martha have created several animated films, including the viral YouTube hit, ‘Busting the Mehrabian Myth’. Martha and Martin will be running a new workshop, Words That Move Mountains. In this interactive workshop, they will explore a variety of examples of persuasive communication and discover how they work their magic.

The workshops are open to anyone, whether they wish to attend the spring conference or not.

Sarah Lynch has been with the European Commission for over 10 years, and has written speeches for successive European Commissioners responsible for fi nancial services policy. Sarah will be leading a breakout session on the problems of writing for non-native speakers for multiligual audiences.

Hanneke Kulik has worked for several Dutch ministers (education, transport, fi nance). Her current speaker is not only Minister of Finance but President of the Eurogroup as well. Hanneke will be speaking about speechwriters’ ethics.

Alexander von Reumont studied acting and directing in Munich and Los Angeles and worked for more than 10 years on stage, in TV, radio and fi lm. Since 1985 he is a lecturer, consultant and trainer. The title of his speech will be Charisma analysis – Where does the credibility of the speaker come from?

Hal Gordon was a speechwriter to the Reagan White House, to General Colin Powell and to a raft of CEOs and top-level executives. In his last full-time corporate position, he wrote for the chairman of the board of ConocoPhillips, then the fi fth-largest Fortune 500 company. The title of his speech will be The Man Who Made Winston Churchill.

Alan Barker is Managing Director of Kairos Training Limited, a specialist consultancy dedicated to developing creativity and communication skills. A prolifi c writer, he is the author of Improve your Communication Skills, How to be Better at Managing People, 30 Minutes to Brainstorm Great Ideas, How to Solve Almost Any Problem and How to Manage Meetings. Alan will be chairing the conference.

Jesper Langergaard has for the last four years been writing speeches for three different Danish Ministers of Science. He has written more than 400 ministerial speeches and is also an experienced trainer in speechwriting. He holds an MSc in Political Science from the University of Aarhus, Denmark.

Lucia Hodgson started writing speeches as a Parliamentary Researcher for backbench MPs. She went on to become Chief Speechwriter at UK Department of Communities and Local Government, and she is currently working in a small team of speechwriters at Department of Education. She holds an MSc in Political Communication.

Steve Bee is a pensions strategist. He is the CEO of Jargonfreebenefi ts. Steve won the UK Speechwriters’ Guild Business Communicator of the Year Award 2014 for his campaign to simplify the jargon that surrounds the world of pensions and benefi ts. He is also a skilled cartoonist and regular contributor to the fi nancial press.

Revd Kate Bruce became Deputy Warden and Tutor in Preaching at Cranmer Hall in April 2013, having previously held a number of chaplaincy and parish posts after ordination in 2001. Her presentation is titled: ‘Public speech: Igniting the heart or extinguishing the will to live?’ Why imagination matters for speech writers.

Rodger Evans joined the Scottish Parliament in 1999. He has written for a panoply of Scots politicians, including the Presiding Offi cer (the Speaker), and currently pens speeches for the Convener of the Economy, Energy & Tourism Committee. Rodger was an arts and music journalist in a previous life. He scribbles a column for the Leither magazine. His breakout session will be How do we promote a positive culture for speechwriting?

The UK Speechwriters’ Guild is an organisation which contracts with Westminster College for the use of facilities, but which has no formal connection with The University of Cambridge.

What will I learn?Our conferences help you improve your ability to write and deliver speeches by:

• listening to top speechwriters share their experiences • giving you techniques from the White House, European institutions and the UK Parliament to improve your texts • making you aware of the linguistic and cultural problems that arise in international speechwriting work • introducing you to fellow professionals from the UK, Europe and the rest of the world • giving you the chance to contrast a variety of speaking styles • allowing you to discuss your own work problems in sessions

Who goes?We make our conferences accessible to new speechwriters, press officers, public affairs professionals, PR specialists, Government speechwriters, freelance copywriters, union officials, aspiring politicians, charities and professional speakers.

Previous conferences have attracted delegates from NATO, the European Commission, the CBI, Orange, Kingfisher, Deloitte, the United Nations, the European Investment Bank, Coca Cola as well as the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties. Our conferences have a strong international flavour. In recent year we’ve attracted delegates from France, Italy, Singapore, Nigeria, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, the United States and Zimbabwe.
