Fact. UK Law...
Located on UK’s main campus in Lexington, UK Law is large enough for a diverse curriculum, yet small enough to foster relationships and community. Founded in 1908, UK Law has been approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1925 and was elected to the Order of the Coif, the most prestigious national legal honorary society, in 1931.

The Academic Success Program at UK Law is designed
to provide individual and group support so students can
master learning strategies needed to successfully complete
their first year of law school. The Program consists of a
four day Introduction to Legal Reasoning Program in August,
weekly skills seminars in the Fall semester, optional
individual meetings, and an extensive library of study aids.
As a 2L and 3L the only required curriculum is
Professional Responsibility, a professional skills course,
and a seminar with a substantial writing requirement.
UK Law’s faculty encourages students in their second
and third year to not only take courses in the area they
expect to practice, but also to gain basic legal literacy
and an understanding of the depth and complexity of
the law as a whole. For course descriptions, please visit
www.law.uky.edu/admissions/coursecatalog.
ALL 1L LAW STUDENTS TAKE A SET CURRICULUM WHICH INCLUDES:
12
Program Requirements
In order to graduate, students must satisfactorily
complete six semesters of full-time law study and 90 hours
of credit in professional law subjects with a GPA of 2.0
or better. The program is designed to be completed in six
successive semesters of academic residence or, under an
accelerated program, in five semesters and two eight-week
summer sessions, allowing graduation in December of the
third year. Full-time is no less than 10 hours, but students
normally enroll in 14-16 credit hours per semester.
Students may also enroll in any other graduate and
undergraduate courses (not counting toward the JD)
without special approval or the payment of additional fees.
ADVICE FROMCURRENT STUDENTS
“Take time for yourself.”
“Start outlining early!”
“Be sure to ask questions during class.”
“Start on assignments early, as soon as you get them when the information is still fresh.”
“Work together with your classmates. You will get things done faster and more accurately.”

Dual Degrees
UK Law offers three dual degree programs. They are:
JD/MA, JD/MBA, and JD/MPA. To be admitted to a
dual degree program, students must apply independently
to both programs, as well as the Graduate School, and
meet the admission standards of each. For more
information on the dual degree programs and Graduate
School visit www.law.uky.edu/dual_degrees and

The legal community in Lexington is headquartered
downtown near the local and federal courthouses where
they, along with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern
District of Kentucky and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court,
convene. This benefits UK Law and its students by
lending itself to various clinical and externship
opportunities that allow students to obtain practical
experience outside the classroom which helps integrate
substantive and procedural law.
The UK Legal Clinic allows students to integrate their
knowledge of substantive and procedural law with practice
skills, including problem identification and solving,
legal analysis, legal research, interviewing, investigation,
counseling, negotiation, drafting, case planning and
management, and the recognition and resolution of ethical
problems. UK’s Legal Clinic offers an exceptional
introduction to the realities of legal practice and client
representation, whether or not you choose to pursue
a career in public interest law.
Externships and other clinical opportunities outside
UK Law allow students to obtain experience in the general
practice of law including applied research, fact gathering,
interviewing, counseling, investigation, negotiation,
working with outside experts, and trial advocacy.

UK Law’s Career Development Office is dedicated to
assisting UK Law students in their employment searches.
UK Law’s employment statistics have consistently
exceeded national averages. UK Law students have the
opportunity to take advantage of a wide array of services
such as one-on-one career counseling, as well as assistance
navigating online resources, seminars, workshops, career
speakers, on-campus interviews, programs, and job
postings. UK Law students have the additional benefit
of receiving career and interview advice from former
practicing attorneys who are also UK Law graduates.
In a typical year, the largest percentage of UK Law
graduates usually go directly into private practice or accept
state/federal judicial clerkships. Some also enter careers
in public interest, business, government, academia, or
decide to pursue further education. Although the majority
of UK Law graduates usually practice in Kentucky, others
opt to pursue careers out-of-state. The Career
Development Office partners with the UK Law Alumni
Association to provide UK graduates with contact
information for alumni practicing outside of Kentucky.
For more detailed information on employment
statistics or the Career Development Office, visit

Two of UK Law’s major strengths are the outstanding
quality of the faculty and their dedication to excellent
teaching. UK Law has strong traditions of open doors,
faculty-student interaction, and faculty concern about
students’ progress and success. The faculty teaching
first-year courses are particularly interested in meeting
with students outside of class to help them make a
successful transition to law school.
UK’s teaching faculty represents a variety of educational
backgrounds. Their combined experience includes many
years of work in major law firms, public interest
programs, and clerking for state and federal judges before
selecting teaching careers. For more information on the
UK Law faculty, please visit their individual profiles at

The Admission Process
For an indication of your probability of admission to UK Law “based on the numbers” visit www.law.uky.edu/admissions/grid.
Non-Academic Factors Other non-academic factors taken into
consideration include:
• Geographic diversity
• Cultural background
• Achievements and leadership positions
• Perseverance and accomplishment under adverse circumstances
• Diversity of reasons for attending law school
• Potential for providing legal services to under-served segments of the population
However, your application must show evidence
of your ability to succeed academically at UK Law
before non-academic factors can play a role in the
admission decision.
The admission process at UK Law involves a “full-file
review” of each candidate’s application. The goal is to
admit a talented and diverse student body that enhances
the educational process while serving the needs of the
Commonwealth of Kentucky and the legal profession.
UK Law accepts entering student applications for the
Fall semester only, and does not offer a part-time program.
We encourage you to visit, call, or email UK Law
Admissions with any questions. Please note that we do not
hold interviews as part of the application/admission process.
Numerical Factors In measuring your academic potential, the Admissions
Committee will begin with your undergraduate grade point
average (GPA) and your score on the Law School Admission
Test (LSAT).
Academic Factors Additional factors considered in your
application include:
• Writing skills
• Trend of college grades
• Letters of recommendation
• Interval between college graduation and your law school application
• Performance of students from your undergraduate school
• College grading and course selection patterns
• Effect outside work could have on your undergraduate performance

Admission Requirements
All applicants for admission to UK Law must meet
the following requirements.
Application and Fee Your application and $50 application fee (paid by credit
card) must be submitted online through the Law School
Admission Council (LSAC) at www.lsac.org.
Transcripts You must obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited
institution prior to enrollment at UK Law. Transcript(s)
should be submitted to the LSAC Credential Assembly
Service (CAS). Be sure to provide transcripts from all
institutions from which you have received credits.
Law School Admission Test (LSAT) Score(s)Registration and information for the LSAT are
available from LSAC. If you have multiple LSAT scores,
the Admissions Committee will review all scores, but
will consider only your highest score. UK Law requires
you to retake the LSAT if your most recent test was more
than three years before your expected enrollment.
Credential Assembly Service (CAS)CAS simplifies the admission process by providing a
centralized service to submit application materials. You
should register for the LSAT and CAS at the same time.
29
Character and Background ExplanationsUK Law’s application includes certain questions concerning
your character and background to be a member of the
practicing bar. These questions relate to prior criminal or
disciplinary charges, claims of fraudulent or deceptive
conduct, and similar issues. Be sure to provide a complete
explanation for any “yes” answer to these questions. Because
of the standard of truthfulness to which lawyers are held,
failure to report any such charge can have more serious
consequences than the charge itself. The Admissions
Committee will consider your answers in its review, but a
“yes” answer in most cases will not, in and of itself,
preclude your admission. If you do answer “yes” to any of
the character and background questions, you may want to
check with the Board of Bar Admissions or Supreme Court
in the state where you intend to practice, to make sure that
you will not be precluded from admission to the bar.
Other Materials (optional)
You may submit an addendum addressing other
information you believe may be relevant to your
application.
Visit www.lsac.org for more information on applying, taking the LSAT, and registering for the CAS.
Personal StatementYou must submit a personal statement in accordance
with the instructions on the application. You must
write the statement yourself using your own words
and ideas. Your statement will be used both as a sample
of your writing ability and for insight. For advice on
writing an effective personal statement, visit
www.law.uky.edu/admissions/FAQ.
Letters of Recommendation (two required)
The Admissions Committee requires you provide
at least two letters of recommendation from those with
personal knowledge of your abilities and qualifications
to study law. The Admissions Committee places the most
weight on letters from professors who have taught you
and are familiar with your academic strengths, but will
consider all recommendation letters to the extent that the
writers actually know you and can speak to your academic
potential, relevant personal qualities, and circumstances.
“Lawyers are professional writers. Seek out opportunities to develop strong analytical and rhetorical skills throughout your entire course of study. Doing so will indeed pay off in practice.”

Applying for Financial AidAt UK Law, federal financial aid is administered by
the UK Office of Student Financial Aid (SFA) and is
designed to ensure that all students admitted to UK

For questions or more information, contact SFA at
859.257.3172 or visit www.uky.edu/financialaid.
If you are interested in receiving federal financial
aid, you must complete and file the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can apply

Scholarships
Because of the generous support of alumni and friends,
UK Law is able to offer scholarship assistance each year
to many students. However, due to the high caliber of
its student body, UK Law is unable to offer scholarships
to all entering students. In many cases, scholarships
are larger the first year, since students are not permitted
to work. Scholarships may be renewable for the second
and third years of law school, and UK Law students
will have the opportunity to apply for new scholarships
as a second and third year student.
Merit ScholarshipsIf you are accepted to UK Law, you will be automatically
considered for merit scholarships. These awards are available
to both Kentucky resident and non-resident applicants. In
awarding merit scholarships, UK Law will consider your
academic honors, undergraduate GPA, LSAT score(s), and
any additional information you choose to submit.
Diversity ScholarshipsUK Law awards part of its scholarship funds on the
basis of educational disadvantage, low-income status,
minority status, and other contributions to diversity.
These awards are available to both Kentucky resident and
non-resident applicants. In making diversity scholarship
awards, UK Law will consider the information you have
included in your application.
33
University FellowshipsUK sponsors fellowships for UK undergraduates
who go on to attend UK Law. For more information
