Rateable Values (RVs) for PFSs increased by c.30% in 2010

(despite RMI / Barber Wadlow challenge which secured average

14% saving)

STILL opportunity to appeal if:

◦ Your RV is based upon incorrect data

◦ Your trade has been affected since 2008 by new competition

(e.g. New supermarket PFS, hand car wash in area, etc)

BUT don't submit appeal without seeking advice – there is a risk

your RV could go up!

RVs will be revised again in 2015 – Barber Wadlow in dialogue with

VOA, preparing research to fend off increases

What is plain packaging?

Removal of brand features – trademarks, other logos, colour schemes and graphics

All products look the same.

Government consultation closes on July 10.

Considerations for the retail trade

Longer transaction and restocking times

Higher security risks

Increase in black market

Less sales for honest retailers.

Potential for lower margins - price becomes the main point of difference.

No credible evidence it will reduce smoking rates or prevent children from starting to smoke.

Australian Government described plain packaging as 'an experiment'.

Alcohol Legislation in Forecourt Shops

◦ Licensing Authority now “responsible authority” –

April 2012

◦ More opposition to applications / renewals for PFS

◦ Reviews / prosecution
