Kaplan’s UKCAT Preparation Courses Include:Strategy Book: The ultimate reference for raising your score on the UKCATA helpful guide to computer-based and multiple-choice
Why an exam prep course? Getting into a top medical, dental or veterinary science programme depends upon doing your best every step of the way: personal statements, A-levels, interviews, and for many
universities, the UKCAT or BMAT.
Which admissions test will I need to take?If you plan to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science at university, you will need to prepare yourself to take the required
aptitude test(s), which are the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) and the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). Please refer to the
table opposite to determine which test you need to take.
If you are applying through UCAS for medical school acceptance, we suggest you take both the BMAT and UKCAT to increase the
number of universities to which you can apply.
I’ve heard that all I need to do to prepare is complete the sample questions on the test-makers’ websites.Kaplan strongly suggests that you visit the test-makers’ website to gain an understanding of what the test you are taking involves.
The materials on the test-makers’ websites will familiarise you with the overall design of the test, however they do not offer
strategies for answering the most questions correctly in a limited amount of time. Pacing is of highest importance on these tightly
timed tests, and these websites only offer limited practice.
“An applicant who may not normally
be considered on academic grounds
could be invited to interview on the
strength of strong UKCAT scores
that may indicate potential. Also,
if applicants are very similar in all
other ways, the score may be the
determining factor in selection
for interview.

BMAT – BioMedical Admissions TestThis challenging test is designed to assess candidates’ data handling and reasoning skills, their scientific knowledge and their
ability to structure their thoughts in writing. Universities use the BMAT to help them select candidates for interview. Even for
students with an impressive academic record, a high BMAT score can make all the difference.
UKCAT – UK Clinical Aptitude TestThe UKCAT is an extremely tightly-timed test designed to assess both candidates’ mental abilities and how they might respond
to patients. The majority of the exam tests critical thinking, verbal and mathematical skills; and includes a non-cognitive section.
Scientific knowledge will not be tested. This test is designed to identify those applicants with the strongest aptitude for a career in
medicine or dentistry and is used as a key factor in deciding which applicants get invited for interview.
