Diversity UIC John Marshall students receive guidance and support in a number of ways. UIC John Marshall’s Office of Diversity Affairs, run by an Assistant Dean, is committed to ensuring that the administration, faculty, staff, students, and alumni provide a welcoming atmosphere in a diverse and inclusive environment. The office’s mission is to promote increased diversity and inclusiveness and to publicize and celebrate the benefits of a diverse and inclusive community. The office conducts a number of social and academic programs for students and faculty to promote and enhance the diversity and inclusiveness of the school community. The law school also has a faculty-level Associate Dean whose portfolio includes diversity issues for faculty and for our alternative admission program, SCALES. The Career Services Office (CSO) works to uphold the values of diversity and inclusiveness at UIC John Marshall. The CSO partners with diverse student groups to provide numerous programs throughout the year focused on diversity and the legal profession. The CSO also promotes and supports student participation in a variety of diversity internships, scholarships, conferences, and job fairs through live programs, newsletter, and email communications. Additionally, the CSO hosts programs for employers and diverse bar associations that are seeking to advertise their diversity initiatives to the student population. Members of the CSO staff provide additional support to students who are interested in pursuing these opportunities.
Pro Bono Pro bono and public service are integral parts of UIC John Marshall’s mission of pursuing justice, and improving the law, access to the legal system, and the quality of services rendered by the profession. Students perform pro bono work through the law school’s seven in-house legal clinics: Fair Housing, International Human Rights, Pro Bono Litigation, Veterans, Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy, Trademark, and Patent. Students represent clients in housing, including eviction defense, fair housing, and foreclosure; asylum and international human rights; expungement; criminal defense; consumer issues; veterans' benefits and status issues; and other civil litigation matters. Students also represent community businesses and nonprofit organizations in under-resourced communities in general business, trademark, and patent issues. Through the externship program, students provide pro bono services in a wide range of public interest organizations, government agencies, and the courts.

Narrative In August 2019, the University of Illinois Chicago and The John Marshall Law School joined to create UIC John Marshall Law School—Chicago’s only public law school. As UIC’s 16th college, UIC Law is working to create interdisciplinary programs to train our students for the future of law practice through multidisciplinary perspectives; enhancing our traditional strengths in intellectual property, lawyering skills, and experiential education; and building innovative programs in law and health sciences. The Law School will continue engaging with the community, promoting diversity and excellence, inspiring multidisciplinary solutions to tomorrow’s challenges, and producing the next generation of ethical, talented lawyers and leaders for Chicago and beyond. Since joining UIC, the Law School has amplified its mission to train attorneys to change lives by pursuing justice on behalf of their clients and their communities. In addition to our evolving and rigorous J.D. curriculum, UIC Law provides students with a wide array of opportunities to enhance their education with extensive training, honors programs, clinical and externship placements, and legal scholarship, research, and service opportunities. From our nationally recognized faculty and programs to the impact of our Community Legal Clinics, we prepare our students with the knowledge, skills, experience, and values to change lives. Each year, many UIC Law academic programs are recognized by leading legal education publications as among the best in the country, including legal writing, intellectual property law, international human rights, dispute resolution, and practical training. We have created new concentration programs in Criminal Law & Procedure; Critical Race & Gender Studies; and Health Equity, Law & Policy and will soon launch an interdisciplinary certificate in Disability Legal Studies. The Law School has also been consistently recognized as one of the “most diverse law schools in the nation” (prelaw magazine) and among those with the “greatest resources for minority students” (Princeton Review). --- SPECIALTY AREAS --- LEGAL WRITING – RANKED #7 IN THE NATION BY U.S. NEWS UIC Law’s rigorous, four-semester Lawyering Skills Program provides students intensive instruction in legal reasoning, legal research, oral advocacy, drafting, and counseling. Students may fulfill their drafting course requirement focusing their training in one of nearly a dozen practice areas, including civil litigation, family law, intellectual property, international business law, real estate transactions, and Spanish for lawyers. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW The Law School has been a leader in intellectual property legal education for more than 80 years. Offering one of the most expansive selections of IP electives in the country, UIC Law offers students a JD Concentration in Intellectual Property Law, experiential opportunities in its USPTO-approved Patent and Trademark Clinics, and the chance to publish with or work on the staff of the renowned UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law. HEALTH LAW & POLICY Capitalizing on UIC’s strengths in the health sciences, the UIC Health Equity, Law & Policy Program will prepare tomorrow’s health law advocates to create healthier communities by transforming policies and structures grounded in principles of health equity, justice, and inclusion. Starting in Fall 2021, students will be able to earn a JD/MPH and a JD Concentration in Health Equity, Law & Policy. EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION To graduate, all UIC Law students must complete a clinic or externship. This experiential learning requirement guarantees that students have the opportunity to work directly with clients, under the supervision of faculty or licensed staff attorneys, in areas including economic equity, fair housing law, international human rights, civil litigation, patent law, trademark law, and veteran affairs. Students can also extern outside of the law school, in Chicago and other cities, in judicial chambers, prosecutor's offices, other government offices, and non-profit organizations.
