Community dental CareDuring this course we will review the required screening process for clients, infection control protocols, treatment options, patient care and education. We will discuss the potential of impact that dental care may have on the patient in need; as well as their family and friends. Dentists and other clinic volunteers will share personal experiences of providing treatment in the free dental clinic and the results that are evident immediately as well as long term.Abbotsford is fortunate to have a free dental clinic in downtown Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Food Bank’s Free Dental Clinic was the vision of a local dentist who served overseas and wished to continue this charity at home. A team of very dedicated dentists, hygienists, and certified dental assistants volunteer their time and services. The clinic has been up and running since the summer of 2007 in the upstairs portion of the Abbotsford Food Bank. It helps patients with low incomes and little or no dental coverage.
The Abbotsford Food Bank Free Dental Clinic’s mission:
To provide free dental care for those unable to provide it themselves. We believe charity starts at home, and our hope is to affect the lives of both the patients and volunteers in a positive way.

infection Control Infection prevention and control is an important part of safe patient care. Concerns about the possible spread of blood-borne diseases, and the impact of emerging, highly contagious respiratory and other illnesses, require practitioners to establish, evaluate, continually update and monitor their infection prevention and control strategies and protocols. These guidelines are significantly broader than previous documents, and they reflect current knowledge of the transmission of infection, and how to prevent and control it. Although the principles of infection control remain unchanged, new technologies, materials, equipment, and data require continuous evaluation of current infection control practices. The unique nature of many dental procedures, instruments, and patient care settings also may require specific strategies directed to preventing pathogen transmission among dental health care personnel and their patients.

discipline and terminationsThis 15-hour course will provide students who are supervising or managing work teams with basic knowledge and strategies to prevent difficult employee discipline situations from spiralling out of control and into legal trouble.Addressing disciplinary issues is a reality for most managers, yet it is also a stressful process that many managers address minimally or avoid altogether. But, if disciplinary issues are avoided or handled poorly, they often lead to serious legal problems for the individuals involved and the organization. While we often hear about the dangers of knee-jerk firing, we seldom hear about the fallout from doing too little, too late. Leaving problems to worsen can poison entire work groups and permanently damage the team’s cohesiveness and collaborative spirit. Ultimately the situation reflects poorly on the manager because you did not stand up for the overall effectiveness and productivity of their employees. In fact, if trust and confidence within the work group is severely damaged, it might take considerable time for the wounds to heal and the group to return to full function. To avoid these problems this course will assist you to understand how to handle both the discipline and termination process in order to minimize legal problems and keep work teams functioning smoothly.
