Volume XXII, Number 2 June, 2021 — President Steve T. Gelios — Presidente Steve T. Gelios YOU Are The Union I grew up in a strong Union household. I was walking picket lines at the age of five years old. The Union I grew up with is very different than the one I see today. For example, when one employee was treated unfairly, all employees felt mistreated. An injury to one was an injury to all! There was a pride and a sense of “We the People” that I don’t see much today. Companies took their employees much more seriously because they knew that employees would stick together. They knew employees would take action as a group if they were not treated fairly. And if that meant walking out on strike, all the employees would walk out on strike (and I mean everyone)! Employers can always replace a few employees who walk out but have a much harder time replacing an entire plant or store. Now I can hear you thinking to yourself, “How can we take any action against the Company, we need our jobs?” I know that is a very serious concern for everyone who has managed to keep a job through the recent pandemic and tough economic times. But in my mind, the real question you should be asking yourself is can you afford not to STAND TOGETHER with your co-workers? How much more can we allow our employers to take away before we become the equivalent of sweatshops in a third-world country? When employees stuck together and formed Unions, our country had the largest middle class and enjoyed the most economically prosperous times in our country’s history, all because employees joined together in solidarity and supported one another for the good of all. By the way, employers also fared very well during that time. So what is the issue? In my opinion, the biggest issue we face as a Union is many of our more senior members who fought the hard fight for many years, securing good contracts, are now leaving the workforce. Companies didn’t just hand over those higher wages and good benefits out of the goodness of their hearts. It will be up to the younger members to take up the battle and continue the fight alongside the Union to keep those good contracts in place. Everyone is busy, and feels they don’t have the time to be involved with their Union. But I say, you MUST FIND THE TIME and GET MORE INVOLVED. Without your Union, your wages, benefits, and safe working conditions will suffer – guaranteed! It seems that members expect the Union to do EVERYTHING for them, but WE CANNOT DO IT ALONE! Employers are making it harder to explain the Union to new employees and making it increasingly harder to negotiate better contracts. Why, because they see the same thing we see; most members don’t take a very active role in their Union. They see this as their opportunity to increase their profits - at your expense, because...members don’t care to get involved. But we can turn the ship around if members will just take a few minutes to talk to a new employee or non- member; we can turn the ship around if members will take a little time and attend their Union meetings; we can turn the ship around if members will stand up, speak out, and let their employer know WE ARE THE UNION! You are not going to take away our wages, benefits, or safer working conditions just to keep your CEOs and stockholders rich!!! You do the work, you take care of the customers, and you make your employers profitable! STAND UP! SPEAK OUT! GET INVOLVED! YOU ARE THE UNION!!! ¡HABLEN CLARO! ¡INVOLUCRARSE! ¡TU ERES LA UNIÓN!!!
