Match backgroundBorussia Mönchengladbach's first foray into the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds brings a tie against aManchester City team who have plenty of round of 16 experience on their side.

• While City eased into the last 16 as Group C winners, recording five victories in their six matches and conceding onlyone goal, Gladbach finished second behind Real Madrid in a tight Group B to reach the knockout stages for the firsttime in only their third campaign in the UEFA Champions League proper.

• City are in the round of 16 for the eighth season running and have won their last three ties at this stage; in contrastthis is Mönchengladbach's first European Cup knockout tie, outside qualifying, in over 40 years.

• This first leg is taking place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

Previous meetings• Mönchengladbach and City met in the UEFA Champions League group stage in both 2015/16 and 2016/17, theEnglish club winning three of those four fixtures – although the most recent, on Matchday 5 in the latter campaign, ended in a 1-1 draw in Germany with Raffael's opener cancelled out by David Silva in first-half added time.

• Sergio Agüero's hat-trick had helped City to a 4-0 win at home to Mönchengladbach on Matchday 1 of that 2016/17season. Josep Guardiola's side went on to finish second behind Barcelona with nine points, four ahead of AndréSchubert's Mönchengladbach who finished third.

• City won 2-1 in Mönchengladbach on 30 September 2015. After Joe Hart's first-half penalty save from Raffael,Gladbach scored through Lars Stindl but City responded through Martín Demichelis and Agüero's last-minute penalty.

• City fought back once more to consign Gladbach to a fourth-placed finish in the group when beating them 4-2 onMatchday 6. The visitors had led 2-1 after Julian Korb and Raffael overturned David Silva's goal, but City struck threetimes in the last ten minutes, Raheem Sterling (twice) and Wilfried Bony ensuring they won the section.

• The teams' only previous knockout tie came in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup quarter-finals, Mönchengladbach winning 4-2on aggregate (1-1 a, 3-1 h) en route to lifting the trophy. Ewald Lienen cancelled out Mick Channon's goal in the firstleg at Maine Road and Gladbach won the return 3-1 thanks to goals by Christian Kulik, Hans-Günter Bruns and KarlDel'Haye. Kazimierz Deyna scored for City.

Form guideMönchengladbach• This season, the German club conceded late goals to draw each of their first two fixtures 2-2, shipping a 90th-minuteequaliser at Internazionale before drawing at home to Real Madrid, a match in which they had led 2-0 until the 87thminute. Gladbach then stormed to the top of Group B with a 6-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk, Alassane Pléa scoring ahat-trick in his club's record away UEFA Champions League victory; their biggest home success followed onMatchday 4 with a 4-0 defeat of the Ukrainian side at Borussia-Park, and that proved enough for second place despitesubsequent defeats at home to Inter (2-3) and in Madrid (0-2).

• This is Mönchengladbach's third UEFA Champions League appearance, both previous participations – in 2015/16and 2016/17 – ending in group stage elimination. Fourth in their debut campaign, the German club finished third 12months later.

• Mönchengladbach took part in the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2019/20, finishing third behind İstanbulBaşakşehir and Roma in their section. Marco Rose's side picked up eight points (W2 D2 L2) from their six fixtures.

• The Foals have won four of their last nine European games (D2 L3) but only five of the last 19 (D8 L6).

• This is only Mönchengladbach's second game in Budapest and Hungary, following a 3-0 win against local sideVasas in the 1977/78 European Cup first round first leg at the Népstadion, which was demolished in 2016 to makeway for the new Puskás Aréna.

• The German club have faced English opponents at a neutral venue only once previously, a 3-1 loss to Liverpool inthe 1977 European Cup final at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

• Mönchengladbach are one of two teams making their first round of 16 appearance this season, along with Lazio.

• Although Mönchengladbach took part in the UEFA Champions League play-offs in 2012/13, losing 4-3 on aggregateto Dynamo Kyiv, this is their first knockout tie in the European Cup proper since a 4-2 loss over two legs againstLiverpool in the 1977/78 semi-finals (2-1 h, 0-3 a).

• Gladbach lost their first three two-legged knockout ties against English clubs but have been victorious in the last two, most recently beating Arsenal in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup first round having won both matches 3-2.

Manchester City• City scored three goals in each of their first three Group C victories this season, beating Porto (3-1), Marseille andOlympiacos (both 3-0) before a 1-0 win in Greece on Matchday 4 secured progress. A goalless draw in Porto in theirpenultimate fixture confirmed City in first place before a closing 3-0 win at home to Marseille.

• That aggregate win against Schalke made City's record in two-legged ties against German clubs W2 L2. They hadalso beaten the Gelsenkirchen side in the semi-finals of their victorious European Cup Winners' Cup campaign in1969/70; they lost in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals to Mönchengladbach in 1978/79 and Hamburg 30 years later.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid's 2018 triumph made them the first team to win three successive European Cups twice. The Spanishside won the first five editions of the tournament, between 1956 and 1960; Ajax (1971–73) and Bayern München(1974–76) have also lifted the trophy three years in a row.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 25 times, including 24 insuccession. They have also played a competition-high 99 knockout phase matches – ahead of Bayern München (96)and Barcelona (95).

• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 49 times, including six in 2018/19 – a competition record for asingle season – and Paris Saint-Germain in last season's round of 16.

• Before 2018/19, only twice – Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale's victoryagainst Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. However, Ajax again(against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the 2018/19round of 16 before Tottenham (against Ajax) did likewise in the semi-finals.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris in the 2016/17 last 16,when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previous record held byDeportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home; Romaequalled that margin in the 2017/18 quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona with a 3-0 homesuccess, while in the 2018/19 semi-finals Liverpool lost 3-0 in the first leg at Barcelona but went through after a 4-0home victory.

• Thirty-four ties have been decided on away goals, including 13 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayernand Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times – more than any other club – whereas Internazionalehave been eliminated by that method a record four times.

• In all, 30 ties have required extra time. Fourteen have been settled by extra time alone: seven round of 16encounters including Atlético de Madrid-Liverpool in 2019/20, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final betweenChelsea and Liverpool, and the 2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético have all appeared in threeshoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (two apiece).

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteen havefinished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals.

• Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling theknockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; thattie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it wasequalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final.

• Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions Leagueknockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 secondleg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition.

• A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. Including 2019/20, England has alsoprovided four clubs on eight other occasions – as has Spain six times and Germany three. England is the only nation

to have provided four quarter-finalists in a season, 2018/19 being the third occasion after 2007/08 and 2008/09.

• There are four clubs from two nations in the round of 16 for only the fourth time in 2020/21 (Germany and Spain).England and Spain both had four apiece in 2008/09, there were four each from England and Germany in 2013/14while in 2019/20 Spain and England each had four representatives.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to have lifted the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998,Milan 2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win it three times, a feat CarloAncelotti (Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) and Zinédine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) have replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Internazionale2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

Goalscoring records• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusenon 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Fourteenmore players, also including Messi and Robert Lewandowski twice, have scored four times in a game, most recentlyOlivier Giroud for Chelsea at Sevilla in the 2020/21 group stage. That was the fourth quadruple in succession to bescored away from home after Bayern's Serge Gnabry and Lewandowski (group stage v Tottenham and Crvenazvezda respectively) and Josip Iličić (Atalanta v Valencia, round of 16 second leg) all achieved the feat in 2019/20.

• Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 67 goals in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds, more than any otherplayer. Messi is second on 47 goals, ahead of Lewandowski (24), Thomas Müller (23), and Karim Benzema, RaúlGonzález and Andriy Shevchenko (all 18).

• Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 1 of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in thecompetition, a mark Ronaldo matched against Atlético de Madrid in that season's round of 16 second leg.

Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfieldplayer; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07.

• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at CSKAMoskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder.
