• Joined Real Madrid aged 13, rising through the club's ranks before winning the second division championship with'B' side Real Madrid Castilla. Subsequently stepped up to the first team and would later become one of five key home-grown players known as La Quinta del Buitre, or The Vulture (Emilio Butragueño) and Co.
• The right-sided midfielder played in 559 official games for the capital outfit with whom he won – among other titles –six Ligas and back-to-back UEFA Cups (1985, 1986). • Led Rayo Vallecano to fifth place in the Spanish third tier in his first stint as coach in 2005. Subsequently headedback to Madrid to take charge of Castilla, but it was at Getafe where his reputation as a tactician grew, helping theclub to avoid relegation on the last day of the 2009/10 campaign.
• Enjoyed a brief stint at Sevilla before deciding to pursue a career outside Spain. In February 2013, he was appointedby Olympiacos, taking over from UEFA EURO 2004-winning goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis, who had stepped in asinterim coach a month earlier when the Piraeus club fired Leonardo Jardim.
• Shortly after his appointment, Olympiacos failed to make it past the UEFA Europa League round of 32, succumbingto Levante UD. They were well on their way to their 40th league title, though, the first of Míchel's coaching career, while they also secured the domestic double by beating Asteras Tripolis FC in the Greek Cup final. Another leaguetitle, the club's fourth in succession, followed in 2013/14.

Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later heleft for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for oneseason – alongside Diego Maradona.
• Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours toadd to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina.
• Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italiadouble in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a secondspell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.
• Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and RiverPlate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointmentin December 2011 at Atlético.
• Made immediate impact, leading them to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and toa Copa del Rey final triumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. Even better followed a year later as Atlético held off FCBarcelona and Madrid to win their first league title since 1996, although they fell agonisingly short against Madrid inthe UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon.
