WHAT IS UDL?Universal design of learning for  UDL is an approach to teaching with the realization that every student is different and it offers more choices for these diverse learners.

The universal design of learning will help the students achieve more by changing the educational environment and not focusing on changing the child to fit our instruction.

• This idea comes from the building and architectural world.

• Create ways in which all people could enter a building.

• In the educational world, we design instruction so that every student can access quality instruction and learning.

With UDL, learning is spread across three interconnected networks called Recognition, Strategic and Affective networks.

CENTRAL ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN UDL

• Allows teachers to access many sources to pull from for lessons, activities and, projects which are on their students’ grade level.

• Students can have a wide range of learning materials through the internet and other technology devices. These technology tools are great for learners who are not just auditory leaners because it incorporates all learning styles.

• Technology offers many assistive and adaptive devices.

POTENTIAL IMPACT OF UDL ON STUDENT LEARNING

• UDL will help with differentiation for instruction targeting areas such as ELL, ADD, ADHD, economic and cultural diversity, 504 plans, IEP, Speech, Gifted and many other areas. This will then help the planning of instruction to accommodate all learning styles.

• UDL will engaged more students through more hands on learning experiences enriched with multiple tools and resources.

• Students will have more control thus giving them a sense of pride in their learning.

• Students will have more real world experiences that they can carry with them in their future jobs.

DIVERSE STUDENTS AND UDL

• UDL promotes a strong, yet flexible, foundation to meet a broader range of diverse abilities, disabilities, ethnicities, language skills and learning styles.

• Designed to accommodate a wide range of student abilities for learning. Provides choice in the methods of use.

• Designed to be useful to and accessible by students with diverse abilities for learning.

• Learning environment fostering interaction and communication among students and between students and teachers.

• Teacher can offer choices of content and tools and levels of challenge.
