There is no tougher customer than a pilotflying over a raging inferno.
The aluminiumCessna 182 proves to be reli-able and stable with enough power and there-fore is it the preferred aircraft to use as a spot-ter plane.Uitenhage airfield currently is the base of
the Working On Fire (WOF) aerial fire com-batting team. A Cessna 182 spotter plane aswell as a Bell UH-1 “Huey” are based at theUitenhage Airfield.
TheHueywasdeveloped for theUSmilitaryby the American company Bell, for the Viet-namWar. All theWOFHueys have been fittedwith Bambi buckets capable of dropping 1 100litres of water on a fire. It is one of the mostsuccessful rotorcrafts in the history of aero-nautics. Brian Davies is the chopper pilot ofthe WOF Huey based at the Uitenhage air-field. He was urgently commanded to assistat the wild fire fighting in the Western Cape, but will return this week to the Uitenhagebase. This WOF team will also be seen in action
during the forthcoming Wings & Wheels Fes-
Kruger, Wings & Wheels Festival event orga-niser.“It will, however, not be a real fire, but just
smoke. Fire will not be allowed close to theairfield according to the rules and regulationsapplicable at the airshow.”According to SiemVenter, pilot of theWOF
spotter plane, the Western, Southern andEastern Cape are all hot spot areas with wildfires peaking during themonths fromDecem-ber till April. From May to October the WOF teams relo-
cate covering the areas from the South Coast, grasslands of the Free State all the way upnorth to the forests of Mpumalanga.November isnormally regardedasa resting
period, when equipment and aircraft are ser-viced before moving back to the Cape.“Pilots of spotter planes are vital eyes in the
sky. During a wild fire we constantly have tocommunicate with ground based command-ers as well as with chopper pilots combattingthe wild fire,” said Venter.
nent entails the recruitment of wild land firefighters from the rural and disadvantaged
communities of each hot spot area. The firefighters are put through extensive trainingprogrammes equipping them to be skilledveld and forest fire fighters. The fire fighter teams consist of both vehi-
cle transported hand crews as well as helicop-ter transported teams, also knownasHelitack(helicopter attacked).According to Venter there are 28 wild land
fire fighting teams across the Eastern Capewith each team consisting of 24 members.
Wings & Wheels FestivalThe Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug
Davidson Memorial Airshow will be held atthe Uitenhage Airfield on 27 & 28 March.Various aircraft will be on display and

Allan Hendrickse! “Oh yes, I knew him”or “I remember him, he was the man
who went swimming on the beach for whitesonly.”
According to the late Reverend Allan Hen-drickse’s son, Peter Hendrickse, the above-mentioned is a very common response thathe gets from people.
“They remember his swim at the ‘WhitesOnly’ beach in defiance of beach apartheid.I, however remember the family man, teach-er, minister and politician. The loving hus-band who bought roses for his wife everyFriday. He loved my mother - his friend, lover and confidante -unconditionally. Shewas his biggest supporter and defender,”said Peter Hendrickse from Cape Town.
On this coming Monday, March 16th, itwill be ten years since Reverend Allan Hen-drickse passed-away. He is buried at JubileePark Cemetery in Uitenhage.
“I miss him so much. Ten years is a longtime without him. Allan was the love of mylife. I was blessed with 48 happy, unforgetta-ble married years with him,” said his wife,Terry Hendrickse, who last year moved toCape Town.
“As a person who defied beach apartheid,I would like to see Kings Beach renamed‘Allan Hendrickse Beach’. The SpecialBranch threatened and followed me, but Iwas never afraid of them, because I believedin and supported the same struggle for free-dom as Allan,” said Terry Hendrickse.
As minister Rev. Allan Hendrickse fol-lowed in his father’s footsteps and in 1972was inaugurated as Chairman of the UnitedCongregational Churches in Southern Afri-ca.
According to Peter, his father served DaleStreet and Uitenhage Congregationalchurches for 54 years, not once drawing a sal-ary from his churches. He also served 12 to15 outstations during this time.
“We travelled over hills and down dales toBaviaanskloof despite the floods, throughthe night to Steytlerville from Upington, al-ways for the same reason ‘because the peopleare waiting for communion’.
“When doctors wanted to admit him tohospital, he told them he needed first to goand serve Communion and Baptism inHankey. He died three days later at the PortElizabeth Airport, on his way to hospital,”said Peter Hendrickse.
The late Reverend Hendrickse will also beremembered as a high school science teach-er who believed in education for liberation. He believed that a teacher needs to know thecircumstances of his students.
According to Peter, many forgot that hisfather started the first high school in Uiten-hage for black students namely, LimekayaHigh School, at the request of communityleaders.
He also was a delegate to the MalmesburyConvention, boycotter who became a memberof the CRC, leader of the Labour Party, mem-ber and Minister of the Tri-cameral Parlia-ment. He was an ANC Senator, who in 2004was admitted as Grand Counsellor of the Or-der of the Baobab, in recognition of his contri-bution to the community and the struggle forfreedom. A preacher of Black Consciousness, emphasising the importance of self-respect,self-worth, dignity and pride – Black andproud, Gods children. Prophet of Hope.
He emphasised the importance of educa-tion, respect, hard work and good manners.
Respect yourself, your family and all peo-ple, irrespective of race, colour, creed or sta-tion in life.
In Rev. Hendrickse’s last speech in the oldParliament on 20 December 1993 he said:
“When I look back, I say it has beenworthwhile. Despite all my inadequacies. As a person, despite the criticism, attacksand character assassinations. Today I amstill what I am. And while God is God, I
will remain what I am. I am here, because I believe in the freedom of man,the dignity of every person and his rightto live as God wants him to live. Free at
last! I am free at last.”Terry Hendrickse is currently writing a
book “My life with Allan Hendrickse” andalthough a Capetonian now, she said shewill always treasure happy memories ofUitenhage.

In 2002 tydens Monique Barends se moord, was Elma werksaam by Despatch PrimêreSkool se snoepie.
ers wie se kinders verkrag is bygestaan.

A chess player from Uitenhage has quali-fied for the Eastern Province u.20 chess
team to participate at the forthcoming SouthAfrican Junior Closed Chess Championshipwhich will be held in Pretoria.
Justin Rishworth (18) a learner at CapeRecife High School, has represented EPChess several times and this is his first yearqualifying for SAs which will be held from3-11 April.“It is exciting. I know there are various
challenges lying ahead, but therewill alwaysbe positives and negatives.“Tome it is about the positives, like having
had the opportunity to play on national levelwhether Imake theSA teamornot,” said Jus-tin Rishworth, who started playing chess inGrade 3.He is being coached by Sven Stocklose for
the past five years. Stocklose is an interna-tionally accredited coach and arbiter whohasbeen the coachof several teamsat provin-
cial and national level.“My dream was to play for EP, but when
you achieved your dream it is important toset new goals and try to improve yourself asa player. You have to improve to get whereyou want and to be successful.”According to hismother, Irma, he is deter-
mined and hardworking to achieve hisdreams.“If he wants something he works towards
it.Whenhe plays at a competition andhe los-es he is despondent, but he does not give up.And I like that!” said Irma.It all started for Justin when one of his
teachers, Mrs Smith, invited learners to achess practice. She noticed his interest in the game and
inspired him to start playing. In 2010 I camesecond in the Uitenhage Open C Section inwhich a lot of strong participants competed.“It is important tome that you do not have
toomany expectations in life. Because if youhave high expectations you are destined tobe disappointed.“Look at your achievements in baby steps.
You can’t run if you can’t crawl yet. I alwaystell him give it horns, give it your best, butif you lose, make sure you have at least en-joyed it.“It is fine losing. Losing is not an issue.
Learn something from it and enjoy it. Be-cause if you did not do that then it is a lostcause,” said Irma.Justin saidCapeRecife School has a decent
chess team.“I don’t like comparing teams with each
other. I amnot onewho likes to compare. Butwe have a strong team and we all work hardand strive together to achieve our goals.“The trick to staymotivated. I once toldmy
mom that one day I would love to play in thered and black EP clothes. She told me thatone just has to take small steps and do whatyou can to improve.“Various people like my mom, friends and
family all did their part in keeping me moti-vated. And to stay hungry, passionate and toenjoy the game that I love,” said Justin.
