THE STORY OF No. 36
On Sunday, Aug. 18, Coach Kelly awarded WR Ethan Fernea the No.
36 jersey in honor of Nick Pasquale who wore the number for the
Bruins in 2012 and 2013 before his death in a car accident. Nick’s
parents Mel and Laurie along with his brother A.J. were on the
practice fi eld for the presentation.
Nick was a 5-7, 172 pound redshirt freshman walk-on receiver for the
Bruins who had seen his fi rst game action a week before his death
in September of 2013. He was known for his passion for the game,
his limitless determination and his high qualities as a teammate.
Current UCLA graduate assistant coaches Jerry Neuheisel and Daniel
Fields were teammates with Pasquale. This season will be the fi rst

2019 UCLA FOOTBALL
SPIEKER FIELD AT THE ROSE BOWLHOME OF BRUIN FOOTBALL
The nation’s most famous college football stadium – The Rose Bowl
– will be in its 38th season as the home of the UCLA Bruins football
team. The stadium is recognized as both a United States National
Historic Landmark and a California Historic Civil Engineering landmark.
Thanks to a generous donation in 2017 from prominent UCLA alum
Tod Spieker and his family, the playing surface will be called Spieker
Field at the Rose Bowl.
The Rose Bowl was built specifi cally for football, but has been utilized
as a venue for portions of the 1932 Olympic Games’ cycling events and
was the soccer site for the 1984 Olympics. The Rose Bowl has also
played host to fi ve NFL Super Bowls – XI in 1977, XIV in 1980, XVII in
1983, XXI in 1987 and XXVII in 1993. It was a venue for the 1994 World
Cup and the 1999 Women’s World Cup soccer tournaments, including
the championship games. The USA women’s soccer team victory over
China in the 1999 event drew over 90,000 fans. In addition, the 1983
Army-Navy game was played in the Rose Bowl.
On Jan. 1, 2018 and Jan. 1, 2015, the Rose Bowl served as the site of
one of the College Football Playoff semifi nal games. In 2014, the Rose
Bowl hosted the fi nal BCS Championship contest. It had also played host
to the BCS Championship game in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
Considered an ideal concert venue, the Rose Bowl has hosted shows by
such groups and artists as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kenny Chesney,
Jason Aldean, One Direction, U2, ‘N Sync, Eagles, Rolling Stones, Pink
Floyd, Michael Jackson, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Depeche Mode and
Journey.
The iconic stadium is putting the fi nal touches on a $181 million dol-
lar renovation, and now features a new video board, improved exiting,
wider aisles in the end zones and the Terry Donahue Pavilion. The Pa-
vilion area houses the press boxes, broadcast booths, premium seating,
boxes and suites. In December of 2015, the radio and TV booths were
renamed “The Keith Jackson Broadcast Center”. Jackson, the former
sportscaster, coined the phrase “The Grandaddy of Them All” for the
Rose Bowl Game. Also added are fi eld level entrances and exits, and
additional concession stands and restroom facilities.
Since 2007, UCLA and its opponents have dressed in new locker rooms
located underneath the south concourse of the stadium. The locker area
features all of the latest amenities to benefi t the players, coaches, sports
medicine and equipment staffs. In addition, a new media interview room
and working press area were included in the upgrades. In 1998, new
individual chairs were installed in the seating areas between the end
zones. Also, improved seating areas for the physically challenged were
installed, as well as a new sound system.
Completed in 1922 at a cost of $272,198, the Rose Bowl was fi rst
used for the USC-California football game that year which was won by
the Golden Bears 12-0. The stadium was originally horseshoe shaped
and seated 57,000 persons when it hosted the 1923 Rose Bowl Game.
The south end zone was enclosed prior to the 1929 game to increase
seating capacity to 76,000. Further enlargements took place in 1932
(83,677) and 1949 (100,807). A record crowd of 106,869 fans wit-
nessed the 1973 Ohio State – USC Rose Bowl contest. With the current
seating confi guration for home games, the capacity is 80,616 for gen-
eral admission contests and 88,565 for reserved ticket games.
The Rose Bowl has many fi rsts in its vast history. On Jan. 1, 1927,
radio stations across the nation were linked together for the fi rst time
in a coast-to-coast broadcast. On Jan. 1, 1954, The UCLA-Michigan
State Rose Bowl Game was the fi rst west-to-east color telecast on a
nationwide connection.
The Rose Bowl has 77 rows of seats. It measures 880 feet from the
north to south rims and 695 feet from east to west. Its circumference
around the rim is 2,430 feet, compared to 1,350 feet at fi eld level. It
took 28 miles of lumber to provide the original seats. The square footage
of the grass on the fl oor of the stadium is 79,156.

GAME FIVE: Arizona 20, UCLA 17
Sept. 28 - Tucson, Ariz.TUCSON — A back-and-forth affair between UCLA and Arizona saw
the Wildcats use a fourth-quarter touchdown to earn a 20-17 lead and
then hang on after a late Bruin fi eld goal attempt went wide.
The Bruins did most of their damage on the ground, tallying a season-
high 217 rushing yards, led by Joshua Kelley’s season-best mark of
127 yards on 27 carries. It marked Kelley’s seventh 100-yard rushing
game of his career.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who left the game in the third quarter with
an injury, went 17-for-33 and threw one touchdown. He fi nished with
180 passing yards and had a career-best 63 rushing yards on nine car-
ries. Austin Burton made his fi rst-career appearance in relief.
Jaylen Erwin caught a career-best seven passes for 63 yards, and Kyle
Philips added a career-high six receptions.
Defensively, UCLA was led by Krys Barnes, who tallied six solo tackles ,
including three for loss to match his career-best mark. Shea Pitts came
away with four solo tackles and one sack.
JJ Molson fi nished the night with fi ve points, giving him 262 for his ca-
reer to move into a tie with Chris Griffi th (1999-02) for ninth on UCLA’s
all-time list.
Thompson-Robinson sprinted 26 yards to spark UCLA’s 12-play, 85-
yard scoring drive to put the Bruins on the board. He found Matt Lynch
for the two-yard snag, which marked Lynch’s fi rst career reception.
The Wildcats used two fi eld goals in the second quarter to make it a
one-point game at the break. It was the fi rst time UCLA had held the
lead at the break since it played Arizona a year ago in the Rose Bowl
Molson drilled a 37-yard fi eld goal to extend UCLA’s advantage to 10-6
early in the third frame before Arizona answered with its fi rst touch-
down of the affair to take the lead.
The Bruins fi red right back, winding down the third quarter with a
9-play, 80-yard drive that resulted with Kelley rushing 36 yards into the
red zone and then using a 3-yard dash into the end zone.
But once again, the Wildcats had the answer, notching a 10-yard rush-
ing touchdown which capped off a 75-yard drive to take a 20-17 edge.
With Burton directing the offense, UCLA started its fi nal drive of the
game at its own 9-yard line and made its way into Arizona territory. The
Bruins attempted a 39-yard fi eld goal to tie the game late, but the ball
sailed wide right with just 34 seconds left.

GAME SEVEN: UCLA 34, Stanford 16
Oct. 17 - Stanford, Calif.STANFORD — UCLA built a 21-10 lead at halftime and never looked back, snapping an 11-game losing streak to Stanford on Thursday night on ESPN. It was the fi rst win at Stanford since a 45-17 victory on Sept. 1, 2007 and the fi rst win overall in the series since 2008 when the Bruins won a 23-20 battle in the Rose Bowl.
The Bruins were dominant on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Cardinal 455-198 total yards. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson made a triumphant return after missing the Oregon State game due to injury and completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards with two touch-downs. He also had 13 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown.
Joshua Kelley rushed for a season-high 176 yards (on 18 carries) with one touchdown. Kyle Philips had career-highs in receptions (10), receiving yards (100), and receiving touchdowns (two).
Stanford quarterback Jack West threw for 143 yards, but was sacked seven times. The Cardinal scored on the fi rst possession of the game on a 42-yard fi eld goal by Jet Toner. That was Stanford’s last offensive points until the end of the fourth quarter.
UCLA responded immediately to the Cardinal’s score with a 9-play, 69-yard drive, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Thomp-son-Robinson to Philips. The Bruins would never trail again. After a defensive stop, UCLA returned to the end zone on its second drive of the game, set up by a career-long 39-yard run by Thompson-Robinson. Then the sophomore QB hit Philips again for a three-yard TD as UCLA built a 14-3 lead at the 4:48 mark of the opening quarter for its largest lead of the season to that point.
Stanford’s Spencer Jorgensen blocked a Wade Lees punt and recovered it in the end zone to trim the Bruins’ lead to 14-10. After some great defense by the Bruins that saw UCLA record three sacks on third down on three-straight Stanford possessions, Kelley set up the Bruins’ third touchdown drive of the fi rst half with a 53-yard run that Thompson-Robinson punched in from the one-yard line to lead 21-10.
The Bruins recorded a total of seven sacks in the game, which was the most by the UCLA defense since recording a like number in the Valeron Alamo Bowl win over Kansas State which ended the 2014 season. The 21 fi rst-half points are the most scored this season by the Bruins.
UCLA opened the second half with a 43-yard fi eld goal by JJ Molson to extend its lead to 24-10. He then added a 49-yard fi eld goal later in the third (3:12) to push the Bruins’ lead to 27-10.
With the game secured, Kelley scored the Bruins’ fi nal touchdown of the game on a season-high 54-yard run with 6:55 remaining in the
contest to extend the lead to 34-10.
