The ‘Eaters (5-26) finished eighth in the conference under the direction of first-year head coach Tamara Inoue. Although the Anteaters didn’t always get the results they wanted, there was never a lack of effort, and they saw many improvements from the previous season. As a team, UCI increased its scoring average (60.2), field goal percentage (37.7), 3-point FG percentage (33.2) and steals (247). The ’Eaters also more than doubled their total number of 3-pointers made, draining 196 threes compared to just 92 in 2015-16. Individually, sophomore Andee Ritter obliterated the single-season school record in 3-pointers made with 87. She surpassed the previous best of 64, set by Kathy Lizarraga in 1988-89, with her third triple of the night against Cal Poly on Feb. 9. Freshman Brooke Bayman also dished out a team-high 125 assists, which is tied for 10th in UC Irvine’s single- season history. In addition, senior Irene Chavez will leave the program ranked among the all-time leaders in three categories as she finished her four-year career at No. 6 in free throw percentage (76.7), No. 6 in 3-pointers attempted (359), and No. 8 in 3-pointers made (108). UC Irvine picked up its first win of the season, and of head coach Tamara Inoue’s career, on Dec. 1 as it rolled past Nevada, 72-59. The Anteaters committed only six turnovers, while finishing with 17 assists and 17 steals. They held a commanding 26-4 advantage in points off turnovers and owned a 40-28 edge in points in the paint. Ritter led four UCI players in double digits with 23 points (6 3FG), while also anchoring the defensive effort with a career-best eight steals. The ‘Eaters then closed out their non-conference slate with a 92-61 victory over Concordia. They pulled away in the third quarter where they outscored the Eagles, 40-8. Their 40 points in a period were a school and Big West record. Ritter once again led the charge with 21 points on five 3-pointers. Senior Shereen Sutherland added 17 points in 15 minutes, and junior Teirra Hicks contributed 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds. In Big West play, UC Irvine upset CSUN, which finished third in the conference. It was the Anteaters’ first win over the Matadors since 2014, while the 77-52 triumph was their largest margin of victory in the all-time series. Ritter and Sutherland registered career highs of 25 and 24 points, respectively. Ritter went 8-for-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from long distance. UCI also took down Cal Poly on the road in overtime and defeated Cal State Fullerton in the regular-season finale to earn its spot in the Big West Tournament. Chavez led the way in those two wins as she had a team-high 17 points against the Mustangs and 21 vs. the Titans. Ritter ended up receiving All-Big West honorable mention recognition, while Brooke Bayman was named to the All- Freshman Team. In conference games, Ritter averaged a team-best 12.8 points and 1.8 steals per outing, and she also led the league in minutes played (38.0 mpg) and 3-pointers made (46). Overall, she had 18 double-figure scoring performances, including six with 20 or more points, while she was tops in the Big West with 87 triples and 63 steals. Bayman started 11 of 14 Big West games and led all players with 5.4 assists per outing. She dished out a career-high 10 helpers at UC Riverside. UC Irvine’s future is bright as it will return six letterwinners, including Bayman and Ritter, and five redshirts, while bringing in five highly-touted freshmen in 2017-18. 2016-17 UC IRVINE ANTEATERS No. Name Yr. ‘EATERS CONCLUDE FIRST YEAR OF INOUE ERA The UC Irvine women’s basketball team’s 2016-17 season came to an end in the first round of the Big West Tournament on
March 7. The ‘Eaters (5-26) finished eighth in the conference under the direction of first-year head coach Tamara Inoue.
Although the Anteaters didn’t always get the results they wanted, there was never a lack of effort, and they saw many
improvements from the previous season. As a team, UCI increased its scoring average (60.2), field goal percentage (37.7),
3-point FG percentage (33.2) and steals (247). The ’Eaters also more than doubled their total number of 3-pointers made,
draining 196 threes compared to just 92 in 2015-16.
Individually, sophomore Andee Ritter obliterated the single-season school record in 3-pointers made with 87. She
surpassed the previous best of 64, set by Kathy Lizarraga in 1988-89, with her third triple of the night against Cal Poly on
Feb. 9. Freshman Brooke Bayman also dished out a team-high 125 assists, which is tied for 10th in UC Irvine’s single-
season history. In addition, senior Irene Chavez will leave the program ranked among the all-time leaders in three
categories as she finished her four-year career at No. 6 in free throw percentage (76.7), No. 6 in 3-pointers attempted
(359), and No. 8 in 3-pointers made (108).
UC Irvine picked up its first win of the season, and of head coach Tamara Inoue’s career, on Dec. 1 as it rolled past
Nevada, 72-59. The Anteaters committed only six turnovers, while finishing with 17 assists and 17 steals. They held a
commanding 26-4 advantage in points off turnovers and owned a 40-28 edge in points in the paint. Ritter led four UCI
players in double digits with 23 points (6 3FG), while also anchoring the defensive effort with a career-best eight steals.
The ‘Eaters then closed out their non-conference slate with a 92-61 victory over Concordia. They pulled away in the third
quarter where they outscored the Eagles, 40-8. Their 40 points in a period were a school and Big West record. Ritter once
again led the charge with 21 points on five 3-pointers. Senior Shereen Sutherland added 17 points in 15 minutes, and junior
Teirra Hicks contributed 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
In Big West play, UC Irvine upset CSUN, which finished third in the conference. It was the Anteaters’ first win over the
Matadors since 2014, while the 77-52 triumph was their largest margin of victory in the all-time series. Ritter and Sutherland
registered career highs of 25 and 24 points, respectively. Ritter went 8-for-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from long distance.
UCI also took down Cal Poly on the road in overtime and defeated Cal State Fullerton in the regular-season finale to earn
its spot in the Big West Tournament. Chavez led the way in those two wins as she had a team-high 17 points against the
Mustangs and 21 vs. the Titans.
Ritter ended up receiving All-Big West honorable mention recognition, while Brooke Bayman was named to the All-
Freshman Team. In conference games, Ritter averaged a team-best 12.8 points and 1.8 steals per outing, and she also led
the league in minutes played (38.0 mpg) and 3-pointers made (46). Overall, she had 18 double-figure scoring
performances, including six with 20 or more points, while she was tops in the Big West with 87 triples and 63 steals.
Bayman started 11 of 14 Big West games and led all players with 5.4 assists per outing. She dished out a career-high 10
helpers at UC Riverside.
UC Irvine’s future is bright as it will return six letterwinners, including Bayman and Ritter, and five redshirts, while bringing in
five highly-touted freshmen in 2017-18.

LAST TIME OUT: The Anteaters’ season came to an end with a 92-60 loss to UC Riverside in the first round of the Big
West Tournament at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach. Sophomore Andee Ritter led the way with 20 points as she was 5-
of-10 from 3-point range. Senior Irene Chavez added 13 points and four rebounds, while classmate Brittany Glassow
finished with six points and six boards.
WIN AND YOU’RE IN: With a Big West Tournament berth on the line, UC Irvine came up big under pressure to clinch its
spot in the postseason with a thrilling 69-62 win over Cal State Fullerton on Senior Night at the Bren Events Center. The
Anteaters’ five seniors made sure they controlled their own fate as they combined for 54 points and 31 of the team’s 37
rebounds. Irene Chavez led the way with a team-high 21 points and a career-best eight boards to go along with four assists
and three steals. Shereen Sutherland added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Brittany Glassow had 13 points (3-5 3FG)
and a season-high tying eight rebounds. Chloe Kellum (7) and Mckenzie Piper (5) also combined for 12 rebounds.
GO BIG OR GO HOME: Wins may have been hard to come by, but when the ‘Eaters did get the victory, they did it in
dominating fashion. Three of their five triumphs were by double digits as they averaged 76.8 points and a +15.8 scoring
margin in those outings.
COME ON IRENE: Senior Irene Chavez finished the season with seven-straight double-figure scoring games (17.3 ppg).
She was even better over the last four regular-season outings where she had three 20-point performances and averaged
19.8 points, while shooting 51.4 percent from long distance. The San Jose, Calif., native led the ‘Eaters to a crucial 69 -62
win over Cal State Fullerton with 21 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Prior to that, she poured in a season-best 22
points (4-6 3FG) against Hawai‘i and knocked down a career-high six triples en route to 20 points at Long Beach State. She
also drained five threes in a 16-point showing at UC Santa Barbara.
THREE’S COMPANY: With her third 3-pointer of the night - and 65th of the year - against Cal Poly on Feb. 9, sophomore
Andee Ritter broke a 28-year old single-season school record in threes made. She surpassed the previous mark of 64,
which was set by Kathy Lizarraga in 1988-89. The Medford, Ore., native continued to increase her program-record total to
87, which also ranks sixth in Big West single-season history. She connected from long distance in 29 of 31 outings, and hit
multiple treys 20 times. Ritter also drained a single-game school-record tying seven 3-pointers at UC Riverside on Jan. 7.
MORE ON RITTER: Ritter finished with a team-best 18 double-figure scoring games and reached the 20-point mark six
times. The 6-foot guard had 23 points at Nevada, 21 vs. Concordia, 23 at UC Riverside, a career-high 25 vs. CSUN, 21 at
Long Beach State and 20 against UC Riverside in the conference tournament. In Big West play, she averaged 12.9 points,
3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals per outing, while shooting 36.2 percent from 3-point range. Ritter, who was named the College
Sports Madness Big West Player of the Week on Jan. 2, was also 34-of-35 from the free throw line this season. She made
28 in a row before her first miss of the year at LBSU.
STEALING THE SHOW: In addition to being UCI’s top perimeter shooter, Ritter anchored the defensive effort with a Big
West-leading 63 steals. That mark ranks sixth in single-season program history. Ritter had 15 games with multiple steals,
including a career-high eight takeaways at Nevada on Dec. 1. She was just one shy of the single-game school record of
nine, which was established by Erin Higashi on March 4, 1983.
SENIOR LEADER: In her final season, Shereen Sutherland averaged a career-high 11.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per
contest. The 6-foot-2 senior forward reached double digits in scoring 17 times, and had six outings with 10-plus rebounds.
In addition, she owned four games with 20 or more points, including two that came in back-to-back performances vs. UCSB
(20) and Long Beach State (23). On Jan. 11, she netted a career-high 24 points against CSUN. Sutherland also had four of
the Anteaters’ five double-doubles this season - 14 pts/11 rebs at Cal Poly, 23 pts/10 rebs vs. LBSU, 15 pts/10 rebs vs. UC
Riverside and 20 pts/12 rebs at Portland State. She pulled down at least seven boards in 18 games with a career-high 15
at Utah State.
DISHING IT OUT: Freshman Brooke Bayman closed out the year ranked third in the Big West with 4.4 assists per game.
Those numbers increased in conference play where she averaged a league-best 5.4 helpers per contest. Bayman had at
least five dimes in nine of 14 Big West games played, including a career-high 10 vs. UC Riverside on Jan. 19. She also
showed her scoring prowess with five-straight double-figure scoring outings from Feb. 11-25. During that stretch, the Los
Angeles, Calif., native tallied a season-high 17 points in a win at Cal Poly (Feb. 18).
