Upload Recordings to Announcements through Panopto When you want
to upload a video or audio file to Panopto through Canvas, the
first thing you want to do is navigate to the section where you
want to show the media in your course, such as “Announcements”.
Open up the rich text editor and select the green Panopto Video
Library button.
-
Once the Panopto Video Library window opens, select the "Upload"
tab
-
With the Upload tab open, you are able to drag your video/audio
file into the area inside the dashed line box or you can click on
the "Choose Video or Audio Files" icon and you will be prompted to
upload a file. A good example of a media file you could upload is a
recording of a zoom meeting.
-
Select the video or audio file on your computer then hit the
"open" or "ok" button.
-
The video will begin uploading, once the upload is complete hit
the blue "insert" button at the bottom of the window.
-
The video will be embedded into the rich text editor.
Once the media is done processing you will see a preview
image.
-
Once your media appears in the announcement editor add the title
of the announcement. Then choose all desired sections to post to
all the students in your course. Select your options, then
-
click “Save” to post your announcement.
-
Anything you upload to your course through panopto will be
available to insert from the "Choose" window after selecting the
green panopto button.
-
Recording an Announcement with Panopto Go to “Announcements” in
your course site, click “Announcement,” and you should land in the
Announcement editor.
Click the “Panopto Video Library” button.

Installing Panopto on a Mac (video)
Installing Panopto on a PC (video) Recording Once you are in the
Panopto Recorder, you’ll see this “Record A Session” window in
which you could choose your primary source and secondary sources.
Use the drop-down menu to choose the desired sources. This is
especially important if you are using a microphone other than the
built-in one on your computer; you need to select the plugged in
microphone as the audio source for it to be recorded.

IMPORTANT! In order for your PowerPoint slideshow to be properly
recorded, please make sure you check “Record PowerPoint.”
-
Click “Record” to start your recording, and “Stop” when you are
finished. A window should pop up to confirm that the recording is
complete. Enter the session name (ie. lecture title) and click
“Upload.” If you are not satisfied with the recording and wish to
redo, click “Delete and record again.”
-
If you click “Delete and record again,” another message will pop
up and ask you to confirm the deletion. Once you choose to delete,
you will be brought back to the recording screen again and you can
then start a new recording.
-
After you click “Upload” for your recording, a window will show
the progress of the uploading and processing of your video.
Once your recording is complete, you can exit the window/Panopto
Recorder, and go back to your Canvas page. You should see something
like this:
-
Click “Insert” and you should see the video placed in the
editor. Don’t be alarmed if you see a message like “the video is
not ready yet.” It just means Panopto is still processing the
video. You can go ahead and save and publish your Announcement as

and make sure Panopto is selected.
Recording with Panopto Once the Panopto Recorder is launched,
please make sure the folder section says "Instructor
Recordings."

PC Audio Settings The Panopto software client should retain
settings so that you don't have to check them with each launch.
However, when audio devices are disconnected and reconnected, that
can reset the audio input settings. It’s a good idea to double
check the audio input--it ensures the correct microphone is
selected before recording.
You will also want to take a look at the volume leveling
slider--if the meter is consistently displaying red, you may want
to reduce that to 60-70%.
-
MAC Settings Select Panopto from the top display bar, then from
the drop-down select “Preferences”
Change the "Primary Video Quality" and "Secondary Video Quality"
settings to Ultra (resolution). Change the Local Recording folder
to a folder on your desktop. Then hit "OK."
-
Once you are back to the Panopto interface, please make sure
under “slides,” you check “Record PowerPoint.”
Double check that in the Audio dropdown menu, you have selected
the USB lavalier microphone plugged into your computer.
-
Video-Screen Capture If you would like to record your computer
screen to demonstrate how something works (software, websites, etc)
you can do that directly in the Panopto Recorder.
1. Make sure you zoom into the workspace you want to record as
much as possible without it getting pixelated or distorted
2. Then go back to your Panopto Recorder and
3. In Secondary Sources,
a. Choose the computer monitor on which your workspace is as the
source.
4. If you do not know the name of the monitor, toggle through
the drop-down menu until the workspace that you wish to capture
appears on the preview.
Tips: Rehearse the actions a few times before you actually start
recording so it feels smooth and natural for you. You may want to
write down all the steps on the side as a cheat sheet to guide you
throughout the process.
-
Test Recording, Recommendations and Support Once you have
everything setup, feel free to do your test recording.
● You can delete your test recording and record your lecture. ●
Please let us know if you have any support
○ [email protected] and [email protected] ● Also
submit a photo of your recording layout and/or screenshots of the
settings on your
machine for future needs. We will then review your settings to
provide further suggestions, and determine the best approach to
creating your course media. Our goal is to provide you with the
best support and create the best quality media with you.
Recording Setup Recommendations For recording we recommend:
● If you have existing equipment such as webcam and mic headset,
feel free to use during your recording
● Please make sure your computer is plugged into a power outlet
instead of using a battery while recording.
Audio Microphone Placement
● Please avoid wearing jewelry that could come in contact with
the microphone
● Make sure that the microphone does not come in contact with
any fabric
○ This could create extra noises in the recording that cannot be
edited out
Delivery Please leave a few quiet seconds at the beginning and
end of the recording. It is okay to click the “Pause” button
whenever you need to and continue recording.

-
Camera Placement
● The camera should be placed slightly above eye level
○ Angling too high up or far down will throw the audience
off.
● The camera should be in landscape (horizontal) orientation,
not portrait (vertical), since that’s what the final output will
be.
● The framing should be between waist-up and chest-up (see
reference photos below), any closer or wider can appear awkward or
cause inconveniences when you record.

Q: What are the roles in Panopto? What is my role in
Panopto?
The roles mirror those in Canvas. In a way, you can think of
them as Teacher = Creator and Student = Viewer.
● Creators can record sessions (videos) to a folder, edit and
share recordings, copy or move recordings from one folder to
another, etc.
● Viewers can generally only view recordings.
