UCAS Reference This is written by your tutor Towards the end of the summer term your subject references

are written Referee will use these plus your personal statement and

personal knowledge of you Referee will try to tailor the reference to the subject you are

applying for

UCAS reference - content Personal qualities Attendance Punctuality Relationships with teachers and peers Behaviour Subject content including predicted grades Extra-curricular, interests, hobbies Work experience Career plans Recommendation for the course

UCAS limit the reference to 4,000 characters / 47 lines

Work Experience

Particularly important for certain HE courses such as Medicine and Veterinary Science

For some subjects, EPQ and/or further reading will be seen as more significant

You are responsible for organising this:-– Use school, family or friends contacts– Make contact as early as possible– Be specific about what you want to get from it– Don’t forget that the employers are doing you a favour

Must be completed by Summer 2015 where possible Make sure you gain a written reference from each placement

Personal Statement Your opportunity to stand out from the crowd It helps universities to differentiate between good and excellent

candidates Do seek help in writing it but ultimately it should be ‘your own

voice’ Does it make a difference? The Assistant Registrar for Undergraduate Admissions from

University of Warwick says:

'For highly competitive courses which attract applications from many more candidates than there are places, comparing all applicants' personal statements helps us to identify the most committed and suitable candidates.'
