Doers & Deeds of Academic Excellence
Faculty, staff and friends, this year communications from the
Office of the Provost will undergo significant changes! A new
title, content and style wi ll accompany the new format you wi ll
see in our next issue of thi s newsletter. Doers and Deeds is our
means of enhancing the awareness and quality dimensions of the
faculty , students and academic programs at Western Kentucky Uni
versity. We continue our commitment to excellence and showcasing
our accomplishments in 2003-2004.
2002-2003 In Review ..... .
Faculty ... Dr. Terry Wilson, Director of the Center for Mathemati
cs, Science and Envi ronmental Education at Western, has been
selected as President-elect of the North American Association for
Environmental Education.
Dr. Lau ra McGee, assistant professor in the German program,
received a Fulbright Award to support her research in Berlin during
the 2002-2003 academic year.
Dr. Charles Bussey, professor of History, has been selected as a
Fulbright Scholar for 2003-2004. Dr. Bussey will teach and lecture
in Norway.
Dr. Joe Survant, professor of Engli sh, has been named the current
Kentucky Poet Laureate.
Dr. Gordon Jones, Professor in the Agriculture department, was
named President and Board of Directors member of the National Swine
Improvement Association for 2003-2004.

Students ... Western Kentucky University's forensic team won the
2002 National Forensic Association title. Western became the first
team to win all major national and international titles in the same
year.
The College Heights Herald won two national awards this year: the
Pacemaker Award, presented by the Associate Collegiate Press, and
the Gold Crown, from the Columbia Scholastic Press
Association.
The WKU Mock Trial team won a bid to the 2002 National Tournament
of the American Mock Trial Association.
The WKU Concrete Canoe Team won its 8th straight Ohio Valley
Regional championship in 2003.
2003-2004
Adrian Thomas (Psychology faculty) and Andria Doyle (graduate
student in industrial and organizational psychology) presented
"Measuring Attitudes toward Individuals with Disabilities: The
Implicit Association Test" at the a 2003 meeting of the Society for
Industrial-Organizational Psychology in Orlando, R.
Elizabeth Lemerise (Psychology faculty) chaired a symposium
entitled "Contributions of Emotion Processes to Social Competence
and Adjustment." The symposium brought together researchers from
WKU, George Mason University, University of Delaware and Yeshiva
Uni versity . Along with Ms. Lemerise, graduate student Bridget
Trame presented "Fitting emotion into a social information
processing model of social competence."
Heather Kossick (WKU undergraduate student) and Jennifer Marlow,
both of whom were interns in Psychology's National Science
Foundation funded Resea rch Experience for Undergraduates program,
presented "Can High-risk Older Drivers be Identified through
Performance on a Condensed Useful Field of View Test?" at the
Mid-America Undergraduate Psychology Re search Conference (MAUPRC)
in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
Leigh Bryant (Applied Experimental Psychology graduate student)
Brenna McCormick (Psychology undergraduate and REU Intern) and
Jennifer Charleston (Hampton Universi ty undergraduate and REU
intern) presented "Reciprocated friendships in integrated
classrooms: Teachers' and peers ' perspectives" at the 2003
international meeting of the Society for Research in Child
Development
Potter College of Arts and Humanities
Edward Bohlander, Professor of Sociology, and Bernadette Cornett,
Graduate Student and Research Assistant in the Department of
Sociology, recently completed a monograph contai ning an evaluation
of the Project Citizen program for the Kentucky Administrative
Office of the Courts.
Dr. R. Wayne Pope, Director of Opera Theatre, premiered Maurice
Gardner's Sacred Trilogy - Part I for Baritone, Viola, Cello and
Piano and appeared as Bass Soloist with the Bowling Green Choral
Society in a performance of the Mozart Requiem. In December Dr.
Pope traveled to New Orleans to solo with the Louisiana
Philharmonic Orchestra and New Orleans Symphony Chorale in their
annual performance of Handel's Messiah.

Cecilia Watkins, Ph.D., C.H.E.S., Department of Public Health, of
Western Kentucky Uni versity and Teresa Lovely, C.H.E.S., Health
Promotion Director of Logan Aluminum, presented "Worksite Health
Promotion & Community Service Learning; The Perfect Partners"
in 2003, at the Community Service Learning Conference and Kentucky
Public Health Association Conference in Kentucky.
Dr. Darlene Applegate, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, and
Careese Cannon, a Biological Anthropology student, presented "SEM
Analysis of Skeletal Pathology and Cultural Modification from Grave
17 at Site 15Al329A, Allen County, Kentucky" at the 20th Annual
Kentucky Heritage Council Archaeology Conference, Louisville,
February 28-March 2, 2003. Dr. Applegate was also elected to serve
a two-year term as President-Elect of the Kentucky Organization of
Professional Archaeologists, March 2003.
Dr. Erika Brady, Professor of Folk Studies, presented "Halfway to
Heaven: Muhlenberg County, KY, and the Prine Perplex" at the
American Folklore Society annual meeting, Rochester, NY, in October
2002. Dr. Brady also was the keynote speaker at the South Carolina
Traditional Arts Network annual conference in Columbia, SC, in
March 2003.
Dr. Laura McGee, Assistant Professor of German, presented
"Contested Identities in Contemporary Berlin: Dogma, Reality Cinema
and the Navigation of Urban Space" at the European Cinema Research
Forum, University of Bath, April 24-26, 2003.
Dr. Linda Pickle, Professor of German and Department Head, gave a
paper entitled "Challenges and Opportunities for a Modern Languages
Program at a Regional University" at the Central States Conference
of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, March
6-8, 2003.
Dr. Johnston Njoku, Associate Professor of Folk Studies, read a
paper at the First International Conference on Igbo Studies at
Cornell University in Apri l 2003. The paper, "Oral Traditions of
Slave Routes from Igbo Hinter land of Nigeria" was based on Dr.
Njoku's current research on how enslaved Africans were forced to
travel from their villages to the coast before the journey to the
Americas.
Dr. Michael Kallstrom's composition for tuba and piano, UPWARD
BELLS, was premiered on a facul ty recital at Emporia State
University in Kansas on March 9. The work was commissioned and
performed by Dr. Jeff Hodapp.
Dr. John Cipolla recorded Burchland, a composition by Dr. Charles
Smith, with the Bowling Green Chamber Or chestra on February 17"'
2003; the compact disc is due for release in the spring of
2003.
Mark Berry performed and recorded as a member of the Bowling Green
Chamber Orchestra. The performance was a world premiere of the
piece Burch/and, which was composed by WKU Professor Emeritus,
Charles Smith and featured Grammy Award winning bluegrass artist,
Curtis Burch_
Mary Wolinski was elected Vice President and Program Chair of the
South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society for
academic year 2003/2004.
Dr. John Carmichael has been elected President-elect of the
Southern Division of the College Band Directors National
Association.
Robyn Swanson, President of the Kentucky Music Educators
Association (KMEA), chaired the planning of the 2003 Prism of
Excellence in Music Education Professional Development In-service
Conference. Over 2,000 music educators attended the event that was
held in Louisville, Kentucky

Dr. Craig Martin 's article, "Sports Celebrity Influence on the
Behavioral Intentions of Generation Y' has been accepted in the
well known Jour/wi of Advertisillg Research.
Lloyd Davies participated in the second annual symposium on
Hermeneutics at Bar-Han Univers ity, Israel , in honor of Harold
Fisch, giving a talk called "Nazi rite Criticism, or The Agon of
Harold Fisch."
Ted Hovet presented a paper called "Teacher as Exhibitor:
Presenting the Image in The Classroom" at the annual meeting of the
Society for Cinema and Media Studies in Minneapolis in March.
Ron Eckard and June Rose Garrott made the presentation "Successful
Models for Enhancing Intercultural Com munication" in Baltimore,
MD at the annual convention of Teachers of English to Speakers of
Other Languages (TESOL).
Judith Szerdahelyi attended the 2003 Conference on College
Composition and Communication in New York City. She gave a paper
entitled "Conscientization As Transforming Possibility "at the
Research Network Forum. She also chaired a session entitled
"Ethos-Centered Rhetorics: Challenging, Transforming, and
Preserving Cul tures."
Charmaine Mosby traveled to Albuquerque, NM to present "The Best of
Three Worlds: Using a Blended Course to Increase Technology Use
Among Teachers" at the Society for Information Technology and
Teacher Education International Conference.
WKU makes a strong showing in Broadcasting/Journali sm competitions
-Twelve Western Kentucky Un iversity students won awards from the
2003 Associated Press Broadcasters' Association student
competition. Seven students also won awards from the Society of
Professional Journalists regional competition. Finally, several
alumni and facu lty wi ll receive awards at the Associated Press
Broadcasters Association luncheon, May 31m in Eli zabethtown,
Kentucky .
Kendra Reid, I st chair clarinet, Brad Baumgardner, Hilary Bogert,
Pamela Ruby, and Mathew Carmichael, 1st chair saxophone - were
selected, through audi tion, to perform with the Kentucky
All-Collegiate Band at the Kentucky Music Educators Conference on
February 7, 2003.
Student Amanda Biggs, was a winner at the 2003 National Association
of Teachers of Singing competition in Lexington. Amanda also sang
the very difficult lead role in SOUR ANGELICA thi s semester.
Gordon Ford College of Business
Dr. Doug Fugate had "Private Labels vs. National Brands: Examining
the Evolution of a New Power Sharing Relationship," accepted for
both presentation and the proceedings at the 2003 Atlantic
Marketing Association meeting this September.
Dr. Zubair Mohamed, Management Department Chair, and Mr. William
Parsons, Director for the Office of Global Business have received
addi tional fu nding to continue on a Business Internationalization
Education (BIE) Grant titled "Acheiving International Motives
(AIMs)."

Clara Verst, a May 2003 accounting graduate, has passed all parts
of the CPA Examination on the first sitting with outstanding grades
of 96, 95, 93, and 88 on the four parts of the exam. Clara is
employed by the account ing firm of BKD, LLP in Bowling
Green.
College of Health and Human Services
Western' s Communication Disorders Distance Program in New York
City is now in compliance with the Standards for
Accreditation.
Wayne Higgins, Charles Wainright Ill, and Ning Lu submitted
"Preparedness of Kentucky Hospitals for Mass Casualty Events" to
the Kentucky Hospital Association and the Kentucky Department for
Public Health.
Charles Wainright III, Lee Brown and Rod Handy submitted "Kentucky
Emergency Medical Service Preparedness for Weapons of Mass
Destruction Events: Results of an EMS Director Survey" to the
Kentucky Department for Public Health and the state bioterrorism
coordinator.
Ogden College of Science and Engineering
Dr. David Keeling, head of Western Kentucky University's Department
of Geography and Geology, recently returned from a IS-day
educational tour to Eastern and Southern Europe. Representi ng the
American Geographical Society.
Dr. Chris Groves has been invited by the Chinese Academy of
Sciences and the government of Sichuan Province to attend the
October 2003 "International Symposium of Jiuzhaigou-Huanglong Karst
in China."
Dr. Wei-Ping Pan was invited by the University of Coruna, Spain, to
give three lectures on the characterization of material by thermal
methods of analysis between June 30 and July 8.
Professor Riko Ozao from the North Shore College of Sony Institute
(Japan) wi ll be visiting WKU's laboratory between July 17 and
September 6 to conduct a research project on the characteri zation
of activated carbons made from apple cider waste and chicken
waste.
Architecture students Eric Hathaway and Todd Lehmankuler have
received an international award to study at Falling Water this
summer. They received 2 of 15 awards di stributed
internationally.
Mr. Quentin Lineberry (Ph. D. student) was awarded a NASA
Fellowship from the NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program
(GSRP). He wi ll focus his research on the thermal stability and
degradation of polyi mide nanocomposites. This work wi ll be a
collaboration with Dr. Connell from the NASA Langley Research
Center.
Daniel Taylor, a geoscience graduate student from Scottsville,
Kentucky, received a scholarship to attend the Environmental
Systems Research Institute (ESRl) Conference in San Diego,
California, July 5- 11. Taylor was selected from a pool of over 400
applicants for the scholarship, supporting 60 student assistants
from 27 states and four countries

Community College
The Owensboro campus of WKU, in association with the Higher Ed
ucation Consortium of Owensboro, is now offering Master's degrees
in English. History, Mental Health, and Public Administration. WKU
Owensboro joins with Bresc ia University, Kentucky Wesleyan College
and Owensboro Community & Technical College to make this
possible.
Interdisciplinary
Mary Brennan, graduate student at the University of Arkansas, is
the inaugural winner of a fellowship from the Kentucky Library and
Museum at WKU. Her study this summer involved extensive study in
the Tate Page Folklore Collection.
The Kentucky Museum's Artist-in-Residence Lynn Ferguson has
completed a series of Saturday morning Art in the Museum classes
for children and adults. Ferguson also conducted art classes at the
Warren County Juvenile Detention Center.
The recent issue of the Lalldmark Report contains an article by
Assoc. Professor Donna Parker (Kentucky Museum Exhibits Curator)
about Warren County's Rosenwald Schools at Rockfi eld and
Delafield.
